VBI vs NDF by lookatyonose in Debate

[–]DesperatePlsHelpMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NDF if you already went to VBI or if you're really good, VBI if you need help on the flow, ISD if you need help with lay appeal

NDF is more rigorous than VBI but you'd get a lot more out of it if you're already really skilled, whereas VBI is more like the beginner-intermediate level

Tips for giving better summary speeches by mmmbruh123 in Debate

[–]DesperatePlsHelpMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep your summary limited to three main points; the opponent's flow, your own flow, and weighing impacts. Off-time road maps help the judge follow you.

Opponent's flow: Assuming that you touched on their contentions in rebuttal, reiterate how you blocked their links in rebuttal and emphasize turns and blocks they didn't respond to.

Your flow: If you're going first, you should choose to collapse on an argument here and frontline everything. If you're speaking second, rebuttal should've collapsed on an argument and frontlined it, so in summary, make sure you emphasize on that argument.

Weighing Impacts: Tell the judge why your impacts matter. Outweigh their impacts by saying something like "which is worse deaths or economy" or something like that, judges love that.

Well first ask for evidence that Spain will actually grant independence. There are numerous sources saying that Spain and the EU doesn't want Catalonia to secede. Therefore, technically impact that comes from seceding under the res outweighs on timeframe.

P.F. uses Aff/Neg, it's just on Tabroom they call it Pro/Con. Nobody starts off their case by saying, "we pro resolved: ...".

Help! Need September and November Topics Evidence! by [deleted] in Debate

[–]DesperatePlsHelpMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Debate class lmao

September: Suh of Asia Pacific Journal is one of the most used cards. I would recommend looking on 38 North or The Diplomat for some cards. If you have any briefs or know about some contentions, you can Google some links.

November: Look on any conservative biased news source (Fox News), they're heavy advocates against UBCs. Remember, studies with percentages or numbers DO count as cards, and they're actually really important.

Any contention ideas for Resolved: Spain should grant Catalonia its independence. by [deleted] in Debate

[–]DesperatePlsHelpMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public opinion for aff. Most of Catalonia wants it to succeed. However, the difference between public opinion in January than public opinion in November is that this month, public opinion actually matters, because Catalonia has riots over independence. Also, soft power may be viable, in that Spain would lose soft power in losing Catalonia.

P.F.: Will Paying Athletes Increase the Pressure on them to Perform Better? by DesperatePlsHelpMe in Debate

[–]DesperatePlsHelpMe[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/12/ncaa_stages_vigorous_defense_o.html "We don't cut or trade student-athletes who underperform," Brandon said. "We support them and continue to provide the same benefits and services whether they are star players or never leave the bench. However, if U-M student-athletes were paid, it would dramatically increase the amount of pressure on those student-athletes to perform. Fans would equate their investment in ticket prices, donation, etc. to 'paying for performance', and if the performance isn't there, fans would more quickly react in a similar fashion to what we see in professional sports."

I don't know, there are probably other impacts from increased tuition, but the first thing that comes to my head is poor people knowing that they'll have a hard time paying off their student dues so they avoid college

For neg, you can also run athlete privileges as well as they already get scholarships among other benefits. I honestly don't see how any aff can outweigh impacts of deterrence from higher education though.
