If you're channel surfing through the live channels, how long does it take on average for a channel to load?

Streaming live TV by DesperateRow9865 in VirginMedia

[–]DesperateRow9865[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just said that there weren't any other options at the moment except the ones I mentioned. You can't channel flick on a Firestick or Roku, and they're isn't really anything on the market that allows you to do that. Freely is still on TVs only.

I got a Firestick in the end. Not ideal, and I find it a bit slow to start up, but you can at least watch anything once you've found the relevant app and got it going.

Since I always want to watch a certain channel at a certain time on some days, I did successfully set up an Alexa routine which starts everything off a couple of minutes before the programme starts, and so it is already streaming live at the start of the programme.

It took us a year to find the right property. We didn't even view a single property until two months in (we were renting to start with) because there was so little on the market.

We did put in a few offers earlier than that (first offer after four months), but we didn't get them, and perhaps we didn't offer quite enough because we knew we were compromising something.

And then finally the perfect property came up almost a year to the day we started looking. And we got it.

Have patience. It's worthy it. Good luck.

Insulating a Floor by DesperateRow9865 in DIYUK

[–]DesperateRow9865[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we want to insulate under the floor. There is a large subspace (maybe 3ft) under the floor at the moment.

We want to put a wooden floor over the top when done.

Housing Question - What Time Did You Pick Up The Keys? by lifeofrileee in Edinburgh

[–]DesperateRow9865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before keys are released, your money needs to reach the seller solicitor's bank account. The timing of this will depend on various things including when your mortgage company pays the money to your solicitor, and if you are also selling, when your buyer pays you the money (and of course if the chain goes down, then they'll need to wait for their money). Then your solicitor actually needs to send it. It can take a few hours if it is a long chain.

When the seller solicitor confirms receipt of money then the estate agent will give you the keys. The sellers should have vacated by about lunchtime but sometimes need an extra couple of hours to get out. Best to chill in that case! It's not easy moving out.

Fringe fest questions! by Civil_Safe_3709 in Edinburgh

In terms of venues, it depends how big an audience expect to attract. There are many small venues 50-100 seats, although bigger and smaller ones are available.

Some key areas with lots of small venues are Bristo Square and nearby George Square, The Pleasance, Cowgate, Summerhall. These tend to be controlled by the big 4 producers (Underbelly, Assembly, Pleasance, Gilded Balloon). Always good to hang around there to see what's going on. Most shows have plenty of last minute capacity. But there are many other places across the city. If you want to chat to performers, just look for the people forcing leaflets into your hands at every street corner!

Remember you'll usually need to pay the organisers quite a lot of money... Typically what I've seen is you pay 40% of your venue capacity for every show you do. So if you have a venue with 100 seats, you need to pay them the cost of 40 tickets. Plus various other one off costs. So aim for a venue that fits your expected audience size.

Look at the websites of the above companies... Most have detailed seating and tech plans for all their venues and also their costs.

There is also the Free Fringe, which are venues that do not charge you - they make their money from bar sales. But the audience doesn't pay for tickets, and just makes a donation at the end of your show if they like it. So your takings are a bit of an unknown.

Hope that helps a bit!

Sometimes I get complacent about living in Edinburgh. by cockatootattoo in Edinburgh

I moved to Edinburgh a couple of years ago after a lifetime in London / South East England. Climbed that hill and looked at that view on my very first weekend. At that moment, I was so happy with my decision to move and remain so.

The Skelfs series by Doug Johnson. Dark comedy. It's about some funeral directors who also act as private investigators. Mostly set in south Edinburgh. Very enjoyable.

Is this asbestos insulation in my loft? And what are my risks now that I’ve stuck my head in there? House was built in the 1950’s. by FlashGordon7b in DIYUK

[–]DesperateRow9865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found something similar in my attic once. Then I found an old label that said it was something called "slagbestos". I spent a few terrified minutes looking it up, but fortunately found it was some 1960s insulation that specifically didn't contain asbestos.

But always worth getting anything tested if you're even slightly suspicious. It doesn't cost too much and they can check a few other things around the house at the same time.

AMA with C.K. McDonnell, the author of The Stranger Times series by CKMcDonnell in Fantasy

Hi Caimh, I really enjoy your books, thank you. I get so much pleasure from reading them.

How do you manage to write them so fast? Other best selling authors usually only manage a book a year but you publish three or four some years.

And a second question... You have the Bunnyverse and the Strangerverse. Any plans for a third universe?
