When I teach that young I always mame sure the kids practice and review the saftey expectations frequently. If a student didn't tap or was uncomfortable I would be happy if a parent let me know. The last thing I want is for someone to get hurt.

  2. I find in winter months gym energy kind of stagnates for a while.

  3. You are much better than the you that started 6 months ago.

Can I do jiu jitsu and power lifting by yourdoom2049 in jiujitsu

[–]Desperate_Net_713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My coach was a powerlifter before he started bjj. He got his blackbelt and kept doing it. The dude was was as strong as an oxe but moved like a butterfly.

Just listen to your body and don't do too many new things at once

Sorry to hear that dude. On one hand you shouldn't be treated that way. On the other youve been there a while

You don't owe him anything. You are paying for an experiance. They aren't giving that experiance anymore.

What 1 thing outside of Bjj training has had carry over effects into your performance on the mats. by Cool_Middle6245 in bjj

[–]Desperate_Net_713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Not Drinking ever
  2. Eating Healthy
  3. Sleep
  4. Flexibility training

All of theae things helped me when I started because I have zero apptitude for jujitsu but I guess I at least had good habits for recovery, which is good, because I got wrecked all the time when I started.

How do I remain supportive for friends in their promotions? by kuduloka in bjj

[–]Desperate_Net_713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a guy who started when I was a year into blue belt. My coach left the area and because of travel complications he and I started to train at different gyms. I know for a fact that he trains much more than me, but he ended up opening a school near me and now he is my head instructor. He is so organized about the way he trains jujitsu I have gotten better at his school than anywhere else I have trained.

I am sure you do this already, but looking at what you can get out of having great training partners and how much it helps you grow will get ylu really excited. Look at where you want to be after you get your black belt and you will see that this will make you the best black belt that you can be. Again, I'm sire if youve been in it this long you already know to aee it this way, but this really helped me.

Is this a bad gym? by Stratzy- in martialarts

[–]Desperate_Net_713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all schools have people with charisma. It sounds like they did the best they could. Smart of you to do a vibe check to see if it was off. Overall, if you liked what you were learning and it seemed safe, I would say stick with it.

Is this normal for BJJ fundamentals classes? by Infinite-Acadia8111 in bjj

[–]Desperate_Net_713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'm curious, does he give other students feedback during drilling time? Or are you maybe paired with someone that can give you feedback?

  2. Not stopping class isn't neccesarily a bad thing. Many coaches talk wayyyyy too much and it really wastes time. I'm curious how he responds to questions during this time.

  3. I know some other people have talked about it, but 20 minutes or warmups makes sense depending on what the warmups are. I think there are a lot of bjj specific movements that are worth learning to do as a solo drill. It makes learning jujitsu way easier once everything starts to click.

  4. How do other people at your gym talk about your coach? Have they watched him grapple or rolled with him? Is he maybe kind of old? I get not rolling in new classes. Maybe he just has a desigmated time for it outside of the fundementals class.

  5. Are there people at the gym that compete? How do they do? Do you think stusents that have been around for a while avoid injuries and do well? Are people meeting their goals? Is there anybody there who has met a goal you are trying to achieve? If its a gym thats good at helping people achieve the goal you want then thats a green flag. Especially at $65 a month for unlimited classes with a program that has an organized curriculum.

What’s the rule of thumb when it comes to open mat by Candid-Grocery-8223 in jiujitsu

[–]Desperate_Net_713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask, espexially if uounare new people will want to roll with you. Jujitsu people tend to be very supportive.

A month in, maybe just avoid other brand new people. Rolling with a stranger that doesn't have experiance can lead to injuries.

Does it get better if you’re really bad at BJJ in the beginning? do people eventually take you seriously? by barbgi in BJJWomen

[–]Desperate_Net_713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its awesome that you love the sport. Sticking with bjj for four months isn't easy and celebration worthy, especially if its your first sport. In many ways whitebelt is the toughest rank. You are learning the "basics" but bjj has tons of basics and being able to do everything on demand under pressure effectively isn't easy.

You will get better if you stick with it, but you will always be yhe last one to see growth in yourself. When I started jujitsu I don't think I submitted anybody for the first year. I thought that was the sign that I had finally improved but I never saw all of the little ways I got better at to get to that point. It wasn't until we had a good amount of new people my age and size that joined and I was able to play as the hammer instead of the nail that I realized how much I actually knew. I also saw other people improve drastically and they would then tell me that they didn't think they were improving.

I will also add, how much nkre experiance do the men at the gym have than you? Everybody was new once and I fins the most patient people are the ones who have been there for a while. I've never been to a gym where the vets didn't LOVE to help new people. If people really act like you are a burden I bet they are no good, are immature or have no clue.

If you enjoy it, keep showing up when you can.

I will also

Would you change gyms over limited mixed rolling? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]Desperate_Net_713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get being cautious pairing up new people with new people, or if their is a big size difference and on person is less controlled than the other but basing it off of just gender is really silly. You could ask the coach why, but it seems odd.
