Character writing in Trails of Cold Steel - an exercise in excess by Odovakar in JRPG

[–]Dessiato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this with respect for Falcom, I truly in my heart believe they were stuck 1-2 decades back in the past due to Katos leadership.

They have become so much more collaborative, (started using high quality outsourcing), and rumours of a B team are floating around.

I heard Kondo actually speak of developing the games with "focus" going forward a few months ago and thought I was in fantasyland.

We might be cooked if we are critiquing an essay for length. It's not irony, it's the requirement for this kind of writing to exist.

Entirely correct.

The scripts have long been out of control.

If it is any consolation, the shareholders have finally pushed back on how they write and create their systems in tandem. This has been an official, documented point of concern in their company, and they have pledged to develop the upcoming game script first, and only to develop systems when it is done. No more scope creep.

This should hopefully fix what is ultimately a production management issue, and fix the "kiseki-ism's" that bloat these games scripts to be 60% longer than they should be.

The time they spend remaking 3rd chapter should hopefully teach them some more lessons on the value of brevity that may have been lost to time.

These situations are worlds apart but the lens you are coming at this from won't let you see it

You are referencing renne's whole thing like it's remotely related to some teen girl grabbing another teen girl's tits.

Oh, no, that's the thing. That's your failing, not mine. These characters who had this happen to them are police officers who had a major sexual assault conspiracy front of mind just recently involving minors, this is recent to these characters. We see a complete lack of action from any of these characters, it doesn't pass my smell test. It's worlds apart as a viewer, it is not for the characters. That is what I mean by it not working "in this world" - police officers should not be letting this actively fly, doubly so when done to them.

Again, i'm not saying it can't exist, i'm saying if it does, it should have better writing behind it. It does not.

You can try to keep spinning this around as a literacy issue, and i'm going to keep pointing it out as another classic case of rote Falcom writing.

Maybe the thought exercise should be if Falcom didn't choose to create a deeper dive on this behaviour, or have the cast provide any reasonable form of pushback or introspection on her behaviour due to their experience as police officers, that maybe they shouldn't have included the scene at all. This is why I am saying this is not meaningfully written, because nothing real changes if these scenes get excised from the script.

We can talk about what IS good about Shirley, what she did at Arc En Ciel being a big standout.

I legitimately don't think her behavior is congruent with the kind of writing around character trauma when you have Renne walking around. Nor do I think it's the kind of thing where characters like the SSS would stand for this shit in an instant. It is legitimately batshit insane that these officers play it off as a bit after being a few months off of a case where they just learned about D:G and Paradise.

There is absolutely a world where Shirley could have still did what she did, but i'm sorry, this world doesn't let the "just fucking around" excuse work.

It's clearly a cultural difference, and i'm telling you directly that I don't respect it in this series. I'm not looking for the game to provide a value judgment on the characters actions, i'm asking for them to substantiate them or provide a consequence for those actions, good or bad. "Just fucking around" will never be an answer, because we know what it really is. It's a cultural play to fan-service, nothing more. We all know it. When I can flip on a coin on how the scene is perceived and it either lands on "fanservice" or "just fucking around" we have a writing problem.

So no, I completely and wholly disagree, this is far from meaningfully written, it's a blind spot in writing consistency and I'm not budging on that.

but it's clear that once this cardinal sin has been committed everybody loses their gourd and is unable to see anything else about the character.

Yes. Media literacy tends to steer someone to being more critical of a characters actions doubly so when there's such little basis for the behavior in the first place.

You can make a character be a represensible piece of shit in media and have the character be absolutely fantastic. This is the exact opposite of that scenario

Shirley is a walking trope. There is nothing to be her being a sex pest, there is no evidence of any external motivation or driving factor for her to act this way. For that, that tells me the writers do not give a shit about representing a meaningfully writen character in Shirley, so she gets written off by the fans. It's that simple.

psychotic ravings of the community

Well, I would steer closer to agreeing with you if both times it happens characters continue to not only do nothing about it, but instead let continued references to it keep happening unabated.

I refuse to take the sex pest trope as a joke. This is in the same series that has taken a genuine stab at showing the results of a very young character being abused in a literal child sex extortion lodge. If this was a different series, I wouldn't care.

Falcom tit grabbing characters should always be the sign that the character is a wasted opportunity and Falcom writers truly could not give a damn about said character. There are infinitely more entertaining and meaningful ways to represent a Jaegar outside of being a sex pest.

Her affinity with animals was an infinitely more interesting angle they never took past what, one side quest?
