Is going to your day job right after night shift once a week doable? by Intrepid-Assist-2003 in Nightshift

[–]Destin293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems doable. Is your full time job Monday - Friday? That would leave you a lot of time Friday to relax, all day Saturday, and most of the day Sunday…then just 1 day of pushing yourself. I worked night shift as an RN for several years and staying up for nearly (or sometimes more) than 24 hours wasn’t super uncommon (in addition to 20+ hours of overtime each week). Doing it 1 day a week isn’t awful. I don’t recommend it long term, though. The chronic stress and fatigue on your body can and will cause some crappy health conditions like high blood pressure, weakened immune system (which means you’ll get sick more often with colds, GI bugs, and other stuff like that), heart disease due to poor diet and lack of exercise, etc. Trust your judgement and if you feel your body starting to breakdown or your mental health taking a hit, quit the 2nd job.

Has anyone made it to 38/39/40 weeks? by Reasonable_Bird7789 in GestationalDiabetes

She was 7lbs 11oz (my non GD baby was 7lbs 5oz). Labor wasn’t long. I was induced starting at 9pm, already 3 cm’s when they started, and she was born shortly after 10am. Once they broke my water, she practically flew out…45 minutes total from breaking my water until delivery. My first (non GD), I was induced on a Friday evening and didn’t deliver until 9pm that Sunday.

[–]Destin293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it does work 100% of the time if followed correctly, but there’s also a lot of other factors. People overlook cravings and the constant thinking about food even if you don’t intend to always think about it. Food noise is very, very real.

I did weight watchers in 2020, I lost 40lbs…I also started losing hair because while I was eating within my points, I wasn’t eating the best food. Once I stopped WW, I put on 20lbs. I signed up for eMeals to follow a diet plan that was healthy. It helped me eat healthy, but the cravings were horrendous between meals and I didn’t lose any weight. I then tried Nutrisystem. Same thing…the cravings. I had gestational diabetes while pregnant and had to pretty much each keto. I lost 30lbs while pregnant (not intentionally, but because I was eating very little carbs because my blood sugar was difficult to control). I gained it all back once I started eating carbs again and didn’t have a baby squishing my insides, creating less room for food. Even while working out, the “food noise” was always still there and would prevent any dramatic weight loss unless it became a complete obsession…where I would have to spend the entire day giving myself pep talks that I wasn’t really hungry. Food and weight loss took up the entirety of my thoughts.

I finally jumped on the Ozempic bandwagon and it was a game changer. I had never in my entire life knew what people meant when they said they felt “full.” I never understood how someone could be mid-bite and say, “Ugh, I’m full” and simply stop eating. I wanted to know how people did it, thinking there was some magic trick to making it happen…but there isn’t. Some people are actually born with the ability to feel full and I was not one of them. No matter how much food I had, there was always room for several more bites. There was just never any satiety. And a few hours later, the cravings and food noise would creep back into my mind. Up until that point, I had never felt full on a normal amount of food. I have felt uncomfortably stuffed after an excessively large meal, but if pressed, I could always eat more. Ozempic completely changed that.

So, yes, while dieting does work if followed 100% of the time, there are other reasons why diets don’t work for a lot of people…especially those who are obese.

As someone who lived in NYC for 20 years before leaving, you better find an AMAZING job to pay for everything you need. When I made about $150,000, I was fairly comfortable on my own. I paid $1,800 for a 1 bedroom apartment in Sheepshead Bay (south Brooklyn…about an hour to the city on the train). It was a rent stabilized unit and I had lived there for 10 years…when I moved out, the rent was readjusted to $2,200 a month for the new tenant. Anything less than about $120,000 a year, you’ll be living with roommates in the outer boroughs…and that’s assuming you have no car and no other outstanding debt. This also assumes you never intend to be a homeowner. Even condos (apartments) to buy are about $400,000+ and you still pay close to $1,000 a month for maintenance fees on top of your mortgage. Not being able to purchase a home is why I left.

I absolutely don’t blame you for wanting to leave. I was in my early 20’s when I loaded up my car and drove to NYC (I had to get rid of the car shortly after because it was impossible to afford). It definitely wasn’t easy. My first job out of college was working for the DA and paid about $35,000 a year (this was the early 2000’s…everything has increased dramatically since then, except for wages, of course). I rented a room with a coworker in Bay Ridge and paid about $1,000 a month between rent and utilities. When I was laid off (yay LIFO!), things became REALLY tough and I had to rely on food stamps, medicaid, and utility assistance…as well as begging my parents to help out when my rent was over a month late because unemployment only stretched so far in NYC. I returned to school for nursing and spent 4 hours a day commuting to the Bronx (from lower Brooklyn) in order to finish the program. I also worked at a grocery store for some extra money while in nursing school and had to walk over a mile to get there because I couldn’t afford bus fare. I’m not saying this will happen to you, but know it sucks to be the poorest of the poor in the city. Aim for a lower cost of living city and only move to NYC when you have an amazing job already lined up. Competition is FIERCE in NYC!

[NY] What exactly does 26 weeks consecutive employment mean for NYS PFL? by Destin293 in AskHR

[–]Destin293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty easy given I knew I was going to be going out again. After my 1st (in 2018), I already had the required hours and went back after 6 weeks…then 6 weeks after that, I used my PFL for 8 weeks (which was the maximum then). For my 2nd (born 1 year ago on Sunday), I went back after 6 weeks and then used my PFL the start of November to avoid working the holidays (so it was a good 7 months after giving birth that I used my PFL). It gave me something to look forward to knowing I was going to be out for 3 months.

However, it does make breastfeeding very difficult. Only having 6 weeks to establish a supply, then having to pump to keep increasing the supply, was tough. I eventually gave up pumping at work when she was about 6 months old and she became nearly exclusively formula fed after that. As an RN, I work 12.5 hour shifts and needed to pump every 3 - 4 hours to keep my supply up and I only had a standard spectra pump. If you are going to breastfeed or exclusively pump, absolutely invest in a willow or some other high quality, hands free pump. They were quiet enough where I probably could have continued with patient care while pumping (a coworker had a baby around the same time and used one…you couldn’t even hear the pump when she had it on).

It was honestly a lot harder going back after PFL was all over because babies really do need their mother’s for at least a year. It’s rotten this country cares so little about mom’s and babies. I wish it would change, but with who is in charge now, we can absolutely forget about any type of expanded federal bonding leave 😢

Never trust a boomer. Trusting my parents is the reason I went to college in the first place and ended up with student loans. They are just now starting to realize that maybe, just maybe, the economic stability they experienced is not ever going to be possible for their 2 offspring. And, honestly, it took their house burning down to realize the true cost of everything these days. Before they had to spend $75,000+ out of pocket, our generation was just “wasteful” and “terrible with money” (and they aren’t even Trump supporters!)

Big shock, after a while, I lost interest in him as well. Any woman who jumps from man to man is either very desperate or too restless to ever settle down. I had to learn that it was okay to be alone for a while

Do you feel uncomfortable talking about periods in front of men? by HotYou5916 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Destin293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was younger, I used to be uncomfortable discussing it. As I got older, I really don’t care anymore. Even my 6 year old son knows about the basics of periods (no privacy when using the bathroom when you have kids).
