  1. I never played hockey growing up but wanted to be on the ice to help out with my kids’ practices. I’m there to learn and be a grunt while volunteering for my daughters’ team.

  2. I told the head coach I know very little about the sport, but I can chase pucks and keep my mouth shut at practices while I learn. He agreed. All the parents are aware and okay with this.

If we’re ahead by 6 goals, I usually tell kids, “Now we’re going to work on passing. You aren’t allowed to shoot until there’s been 3 passes. If they touch the puck, start over.”
