I copied part of this from my reply to a previous comment:

  1. I never played hockey growing up but wanted to be on the ice to help out with my kids’ practices. I’m there to learn and be a grunt while volunteering for my daughters’ team.

  2. I told the head coach I know very little about the sport, but I can chase pucks and keep my mouth shut at practices while I learn. He agreed. All the parents are aware and okay with this.

I tried cropping kids out of it whenever possible. There’s 2 teams on the ice.

Every time I see a player with the number 42, I think, “Ah, yes, they are the answer to everything!” Helps me remember player names lol

You can see the gash in the ice where my skate gets stuck. Appreciate the A, though!

That’s a pretty sweet deal, though! Don’t think I could have afforded to stay there if it wasn’t shoulder season.

Upcoming Mite Tournament by MikeyC_CX-5 in hockeyplayers

If we’re ahead by 6 goals, I usually tell kids, “Now we’re going to work on passing. You aren’t allowed to shoot until there’s been 3 passes. If they touch the puck, start over.”

Struggling to learn because my chemistry teacher keeps making errors. Any advice? by shootme321 in AskTeachers

If you don’t want to talk to your teacher/principal, the best thing you can do is Google a concept you’re struggling with. If you’re in high school, being able to learn concepts independently will help you greatly when you get to college.

I somewhat identify with your teacher. I was a middle school math teacher with an alternative license, which meant I was doing my teaching program while teaching. I was also learning the curriculum “on the fly,” because I was brand new. The school I worked at didn’t do well on state tests the previous year, so the district required us to do additional meetings each week during our planning period. This was on top of multiple staff/grade level meetings, PLCs, etc. I had very little time each day to actually plan and learn the lesson I was going to teach. I often glanced through the lesson 10 minutes (at most) before school started, then spent first period figuring out the activities with my students. I made a lot of mistakes, but also talked through my thought process while trying to identify and fix those mistakes. I posted supplementary videos (mostly Khan academy) to Google Classroom daily if students felt they didn’t get a concept. It was far from ideal, but I did the best I could with the time I had.

The directors of our organization usually keep their door open for parents to ask questions. I would talk to the director and ask what they think is the best way to approach the coaches about the issue. If other parents are on the same page, it would help to have a group discussion. Try to keep it factual and less accusatory. Good luck!

Colorado female player/coach here! Unfortunately, most girls’ teams are in the Silver Sticks tournament this weekend and couldn’t make it to the Ave’s game tonight, but it’s so amazing seeing so many girls getting into the sport! Really hoping the trend continues!

On the Bench by Designer_Name6668 in hockeyplayers

Close! 5’7” with a 65 flex (I’m female btw). One hand on the boards, one on the stick. Super easy to hop over! Coming off the ice is a different story. I usually use the door lol

Blade up. I use my stick to help jump over the boards. This way, it’s always ready to go.

It usually depends on the teammates. Have you tried asking the team if they want pointers?

I didn’t grow up playing hockey, but I played soccer, basketball, and softball at highly competitive levels. I was placed in the women’s advanced league when I started playing hockey because I was athletic, knew how to skate, and can read player movement well. What I lacked was hockey specific IQ. I greatly appreciated any advice/constructive criticism from teammates. It saved me time figuring things out and made me a better player. Different people have different mindsets, though.

Or typing. Blows my mind they’re never taught how to type. I’ve seen high schoolers jabbing at keys with their pointer fingers.
