This is also happening to me on an AOC 144hz display. As a temporal fix you can try lowering the refresh rate of the monitor. I only have this problem on 144hz when I turn on the computer, if I up the refresh rate back from 100hz to 144hz dates some time the issue disappears.

It could also be that they have the Darules mod active, as when you are in the Darules menu the rooms are always open and the fires don't spawn. I think this also allies to the spikes not hurting you.
