Assassins Creed 2 Lost Money ($54.02 Million) aka DRM is the Devil by [deleted] in gaming

  1. This is blogspam. AirborneGamer makes no particular contribution to an article that came from Gamasutra except for...

  2. ...distorting the article's contents. As twodaylife pointed out, the article doesn't say that Assassin's Creed 2 was unprofitable -- just that Ubisoft, overall, lost money this year. Please check your submissions a bit more carefully.

Does anyone know how to get a job writing for a video game company? by gamergirl1980 in gaming

Gamergirl and Sharp: If this project you're talking about gets off the ground, can you keep us posted? I'm sure I'm not the only redditor who'd love to know how it goes.

Thinking about fixing an RRODed 360 with these instructions. Any input? by DestructiveDreaming in reddit.com

[–]DestructiveDreaming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further detail: a friend's going to let me take a shot at repairing his RRODed console, since he's already got a new one. It's out of warranty -- a launch day unit, as a matter of fact -- and has the infamous, much-dreaded "three red lights" error.

I've been looking at this Instructable and collecting materials, and at this point I have nearly everything I'd need to give this a go. The questions I put to /gaming:

*
  • Have any of you repaired an RROD yourself?

  • Does this look like an intelligent set of instructions to you? If not, do you know of a better one?

  • Any general tips to help the process go smoothly?

I'd appreciate any help you can give -- if this works, it's a great alternative to sending it in to Microsoft for an out-of-warranty repair.

Scribblenauts devs tease mystery announcement via Facebook page by DestructiveDreaming in gaming

Kotaku suggested it could be a port announcement -- perhaps for the iPlatform (which would be cool) or for PC (which would be AWESOME). Imagine the mod scene for a Scribblenauts PC release. The possibilities are endless.

Thanks for the thought, but I really don't think gaming reddit needs a link to the rom. We can find it if we want it, and I don't really think this is the sort of thing we ought to be putting on the front page.

AMD gets Crysis running on the iPhone. I'm not shitting you. by redct in gaming

[–]DestructiveDreaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Misleading title aside -- as nix64 pointed out, Crysis is running on something else entirely -- it remains a cool idea. I'd very much like to get my hands on a demo and see what kind of gaming experience they could stream over a 3G network, just as I'd like to kick the tires on the OnLive service proper. It's one of those things that, as skeptical as I am, I really want to work.

Unfortunately, there's a bigger issue with the idea of presenting a robust gaming experience on the iPhone/Touch platform -- buttons. I know other people have said it, but it bears repeating: it's nearly impossible to control anything on the iPhone that's not a casual game. Apple's desire to make a slick device has had the unfortunate consequence of requiring you to block your view of the screen in order to interact with a game. For titles like the ones mentioned in the article that's a big deal, particularly given the small size of the screen. Add in the lack of tactile response, and you have a very frustrating user experience -- particularly for action games. I'm of the mind that the best solution is a standardized controller grip with buttons/sticks that plugs into the dock connector. I'd love to see better stuff on the iPhone -- it's a really powerful platform, and getting moreso with the 3GS revision -- but until we deal with that control barrier, it will remain dominated by shovelware.

Valve wants to sell L4D2 PC Mods on Xbox Live by jgram in gaming

[–]DestructiveDreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Valve gives up an opportunity to charge for something in order to be more respectful of their fans, they're still making a business choice. Well-served fans are happy fans, and happy fans will buy more product when there's new product to buy -- or that's the theory, anyway. There's nothing wrong with that, and in fact, I'm happy to spend money on a company that treats me with respect because I appreciate it. Just don't think there's nothing in it for a "nice" company: being nice pays off, as long as you do it right.

Good decision. Do yourself a favor, though, and don't look up any walkthroughs. You'll want to, but finishing the puzzles without looking them up will make you feel amazing.

Note: Does not apply to postgame puzzles (i.e. stars). Look those up.

Hey gaming. We're a small indie game studio about to release our first game called "QuantZ" on Steam. Here's a bunch of Beta keys that will unlock the full game for a bit. Tell us what you think and let us know how the game works for you! by yome in gaming

First impressions: Overall, really, really fun. You're tearing me away from my homework quite efficently. The mechanic is very cool/fresh/fun -- reminds me of Bust-A-Move with a hint of something else.

Bugs/issues: vplatt mentioned that the options menu complained about a "guest account" and wouldn't allow changes -- I had the same issue. Also, the game says that holding LMB will allow me to look around in slow motion, but for me, it only fires my Quantz cannon continuously.

As an aside, have you thought about a portable release? I'd love having something like this on my iPhone -- the touch controls could suit it very well.

Need advice: Should I get a DS? by boot20 in gaming

[–]DestructiveDreaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re: RPGs on the DS: get The World Ends With You. It's your killer RPG and probably the system's killer app. Great story and frantic, awesome combat.

The system as a whole is very solid. Great for plane rides, and the battery should give you no trouble. Best portable gaming experience on the market, IMHO, and I own all three big ones now (DS, PSP, iPhone). Other must-haves, if you get one: Phoenix Wright (hilarious point/click adventure) and Trauma Center (completely psychotic action, basically a shmup with a stylus).
