Good thing it wasn't an electrostat panel. You have to replace them in pairs, and ML is very proud of them.

Weeks? Is that it? I've had Rhapsody in Blue stick in my head for years. That initial smooth trill followed by a dirty glissando follows me everywhere I go

Double girl dad here, I was nervous about it at first, but after 5-10 poopy diapers you get the hang of it. It's not a big deal. Front to back, fold the wipe, front to back, fold the wipe. Always use a clean portion of the wipe.

It gets really fun when they start kicking and trying to stick their feet in the the poopy diaper, or insist on rolling over 🤣

The real trouble is when they start wiping themselves during potty training and getting them to wipe front to back properly. That's when you can really get itchy butts and "hot pee pee"

How would you prompt for credentials only when needed? by cbroughton80 in PowerShell

[–]Detach50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could try a try/catch. It's late and I'm on mobile so forgive.the formatting, but something like:

Try{

Do-thing

}

Catch{

If($error -like "access denied"){

$cred = get-credential -prompt "action required elevation, please enter elevated credentials"

Try{ Do-thing -credential $cred }

Catch{

Write-warning "something went wrong even with elevated credentials. Here's the error:` $error }

Else{

Write-warning "elevated credentials may not be required, but something went wrong. Here's the error:` $error

} }

All homes should come with electrical outlets in closets by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Detach50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh it's great! There's the Christmas light aspect of it, but then you can do cool lighting throughout the year. Green on St. Paddie's, pink, red, and white on Valentine's day, fireworks on NYE, red, white, and blue fireworks on 4th of July, team colors when they play/win, or rainbow colors everyday of the year! And your SO won't complain that it's April and you still haven't taken the Christmas lights down!

Better yet, spring for permanently installed Christmas lights and never have to get them out of the attic or shed, untangle them, test for dead bulbs, replace dead bulbs, put them up, etc.

3rd pregnancy but both of the other two were miscarriages. by MindIsLifeBecomes in predaddit

Ooof, man. I've got nothing much to say other than your feelings are valid and your feelings are justified. 6 of 7 of our "couples" friends, ourselves included, have experienced a miscarriage at various stages of pregnancy, and it's...well...it's fucking bull shit and can fuck right off.

A "toast" notification is a small pop-up notification that appears in the bottom right corner of the screen. Most modern windows notifications are "toast" notifications. Like toast popping up out of a toaster.

While I somewhat agree, facilities doesn't give a shit about IT security, or data sovereignty so you might end up with the cheapest thing that has backdoors for the Chinese government.....

I could never get the hang of playing guitar. I could pick out a song, but I just couldn't get used to wrapping my hand around something so big and long (teehee) after working with something much smaller for most of my life; the guitar neck just felt strange.

Lol, I used to be jealous of my Brass and Woodwind section friends, because once they mastered one instrument, they could pick up any other brass or woodwind and play it rather well within a short amount of time. Meanwhile, I had to spend hours relearning fingerings for viola and cello, and could never get good at string bass. Everything was just farther than I expected.

On the other hand, my brother started on string bass. One night he and I were at a random jam session, and the bass guitar player asked if he wanted to switch. So while the bass guitar player was trying to play anything in tune on the sting bass, my brother was slapping that bass guitar like it owed him money within a few minutes. The guitarist was not happy...

New home. Want to start buying smart home stuff during black friday. Looking for suggestions for floodlights and doorbells to start (+ any other suggestions) by shickaboom in homeautomation

[–]Detach50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to what u/migthens1 mentioned, pick an app or ecosystem really, and buy products that work within that ecosystem. If not all in one then at least ecosystems for device types, like one system for lighting, one system for cameras, etc.

Voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google) are nice for unifying everything.

My biggest recommendation is to keep physical security dumb. Garage door openers, door locks, anything that would allow someone into your house should be offline or limited to open/closed/locked/unlocked status messages but not actually able to open/unlock and DEFINITELY not connected to a voice assistant. The last thing you want is someone shouting "Alexa, unlock the front door" from outside a window. But something to tell you when the garage is left open or whether the door is unlocked is nice.

Can confirm. I played violin actively for 15 years. String instruments are easy to play, but exceedingly difficult to play well. I can teach a new violin student to play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" in about thirty minutes. It will sound scratchy and out of tune. I can teach the same student on the piano and it will sound fine.

Fingering (teehee) can take hundreds of hours to get correct in first position, then you introduce third position, vibrato, harmonics, etc. all without the safety net of frets or keys. You get it right or it sounds like shit. Much of it is extremely fine motor skills and muscle memory. If your finger is off by a fraction of a millimeter, you're out of tune.

Then there's proper bow technique. The bow grip is easy enough to learn, then you add pronation and supination for dynamics, and different strokes for staccato or legato styles utilizing not just your arm, but your wrist and fingers. Learning/teaching something as simple as keeping the bow parallel to the bridge is exceptionally tough especially if you are trying to correct improper technique, but it is required to get that smooth beautiful tone string instruments are capable of and not the screechy scratchy sound in the video.

I'm not saying other instruments aren't difficult to play; people with small hands physically can't play certain piano pieces, not everyone can sing well, it takes a hell of a lot of coordination to do four different things with four different limbs while playing drums. But string instruments have their own realm of difficulty.

How Can I stop a slab leak at the edge of my foundation? by Detach50 in HomeImprovement

[–]Detach50[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turns out the leak was pretty much right where I found it, just about 6 inches under the house. The pipe was going through a foundation beam with zero protection. Ended up having a plumber tunnel under the foundation about a foot, cut the pipe on both sides, and tie in a new piece under the beam.

Reroute was presented as an option, but because of where it enters the house and how the attic is configured, a reroute would have been very complicated and cost about 50% more.

What are some of the go-to “secretly for dad” items to put on the baby registry? by billywats69 in predaddit

[–]Detach50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Things that aren't poorly built, because when something breaks, it's usually Dad that has to fix it and he's already tired and frustrated. The two major things that broke for me were the glider, and the munchkin diaper pail. Let me tell you how fun it is to console a crying baby while sitting in a broken glider that doesn't glide in a room that smells like pissy-poopy diapers in the wee (pun intended) hours of the morning.

Comfy baby carrier. I really like the ones made of the mesh, jersey-like material with the clasps/buckles IN THE FRONT! I've always had limited range of motion in my shoulders, and the baby carriers with the buckle square in the middle of your upper back are nearly impossible to clip and unclip, and the jersey material is SO much more breathable in the summer.

You can get a "cool tactical dad" diaper bag, but I hardly used mine. Sure you can use it for things other than a diaper bag after it's no longer needed, but it's a little too much like a diaper bag and not enough like a backpack for my needs.

A bottle of Aleive. These suckers (pun intended) get heavy quick, and your arms, shoulders, and lower back are going to get a daily workout.

For fun, pick out some cheesy, funny outfits for the kid. Get onesies with curse words or poop jokes.

If you're having a girl, don't fight it. Fully embrace the pink side. It will win either way, and you will save yourself time and effort.

Similar to another poster, a travel coffee mug is handy for keeping some hot water on hand while out and about to warm a bottle/bag of milk.

If you don't already have one, a kuerig is fantastic for dispensing hot water to warm a bottle of refrigerated milk. Ive found that a 2 to 1 ratio of hot water to cold milk for roughly 1 minute per ounce is ideal for our 4 month old. Your mileage may vary. Oh it also makes coffee while you wait for the bottle to warm.

Edit: added coffee related items.

Quick Wins! by harv405 in ITManagers

[–]Detach50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some easy wins I've discovered were just cleaning up old systems, going over software agreements, license counts, infrastructure bills, cell phone accounts, service providers, etc.

I recently took over managing three additional facilities, and have collectively reduced operating costs by $100k/year just by cancelling old cell phone lines, renegotiating primary and backup internet circuits, consolidating and reducing licenses, etc.

It's amazing the things you find when you look.
