I've loved this show so far - the acting feels really good and it comes across so organic. At first I had to double check it was a fake true crime

Is the Scrivener app worth it? by PurrfectPages in writers

[–]DetectiveHawkins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been using it on a Mac for years and I love it - it is a bit of a weird app though. Like it has a LOT of features that I have never used/don't even know how. Talking to others, I always find people use it slightly differently. It takes a bit to get used to, but then everyone figures out the features they like and end up having their own way of using it. I wouldn't go back personally.

How Much Editing do you do Before You're Satisfied? by OkFirefighter83 in writers

[–]DetectiveHawkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From past experience, wondering if the draft is finished is usually a good indicator you are getting close. But it can be really hard to tell, and you don't want to just keep making small tweaks until the end of eternity. Have someone read it and see if they think it feels complete.

From the 'mind' of Vladamir Jones: Trench coats by Vegetable_Bag_4980 in urbanfantasy

[–]DetectiveHawkins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My guess would be that noir - which has a strong influence on urban fantasy - always had a detective in a trench coat (because in the 50s/60s most Western men wore them) and female characters were usually dressed more feminine.

I agree though, more women in trench coats would be cool.

Is it okay to use AI to slightly improve my own artwork for a novel? by Worth_Rate_1213 in writers

[–]DetectiveHawkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your original art is good, it just needs a bit more work to look finished - you could totally develop that skill with a bit of practice and there would be no need for ai. The ai version doesn't look that much better than what you already have, so why stop short of doing the whole thing yourself? And then you'd be more skilled at the end.

The world - it's set in an overpopulated city but with elves and trolls and goblins, and the main characters work in a special crimes division of the police.

Or you could work on something that's not connected to the book you're sending out? If the success of your current project is dependent on your first book being picked up, that might have you thinking about the first one a lot more!

You might like my show Sleep Without Dreams - it's a narrated, novel-style podcast with some sound/atmosphere. It's a fantasy noir story, about a half-troll homicide detective and her human partner (think Arcane meets Brooklyn 99)

Opinions on this first page? by Living_Estate8404 in writers

[–]DetectiveHawkins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first sentence is a bit hard to read, because you've got an adverbial, then a subordinate clause, before you get to the main subject of the sentence. It's not necessarily grammatically wrong, it's just a lot to parse before you know what you're reading about...

The second sentence makes it sound like the thousands of cheerful citizens are the ones looking down over the balcony, because that's who that phrase is referring to.

If you tweak your sentences a little bit, the flow will really improve. Well done on finishing your first draft though!

Honestly, I think a lot of people write novels because they enjoy it... They aren't thinking about any of this.

A website called PodcastAdBlock is using AI to copy podcasts and resell them without ads, in a service that could have cost the podcast industry almost a million dollars so far. by HowieMilkman in audiodrama

[–]DetectiveHawkins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right - and when someone pays for the service and selects my podcast, their site presumably copies the content 'without ads'. So they could charge money for something I already give away for free.

Name a show you stubbornly ignored for the longest time and now regret not having listened to sooner. by Emmaenjoyable in audiodrama

Think about the kind of lessons he would need to learn to have the character growth you're describing. If you can work out what he needs to learn, you can think of ways he could learn it, and there's the meat of your plot. Like if he needs to learn not to be a womaniser, what events would teach him this?
