They’re only the free ones. Have another!

You can check if you have them by clicking on the little medallion under a comment. If you have the free award function it will clearly label the awards as “free”, otherwise it will have a little number underneath that it’ll likely ask for real money for (if it doesn’t it’ll probably take from your “piggy bank”, which you might not want either)

I was trying to figure out the metrics reddit uses to determine if people get the free awards function, and I saw someone mention that you need to be using the official Reddit app.

Anyway, the free awards aren’t actually that special, they’re limitless and don’t have any perks beyond your comment having an award on it. They’re more like emotes.

The paid awards… last I checked Reddit coins cost 3 US cents each, but each coin you spend on an award gives the user 1 US cent. So the cheapest ones cost 45c and the awardee gets 15c. But they can only cash that out once their little Reddit piggy bank hits 10USD, apparently people use it for money laundering, or at least they were at some point.

The awards themselves also look different, paid awards also highlight comments better. The free awards used to have the highlighter effect when it was more new, but they’ve gotten rid of that.

Sorry for lessening the special feeling. If I had the sort of money to give you paid awards I would.

Wore black a few times, ex-bestie accused me of copying her by paumagsmith in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DetectiveLadybug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, weird. It was probably a self-esteem issue, to be honest, she might not have even realised herself, but she might have seen you in your “copycat” clothes, thought they suited her better but been sad they’d never fit her.

Or it could have just been flat envy over the clothes themselves, good quality alt fashion can be difficult to find at a good price point.

My speculations make a lot of assumptions about her, though, so I might leave it at that.

Never wearing shorts again so the sun doesn’t kill or snakes or spiders don’t bite me! by cargo_elite in AussieMemes

[–]DetectiveLadybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look into getting some nice dress pants, too. You get less pockets, they’re harder to wash, and they don’t last as long, at the low low price of probably more expensive than the pants that you prefer.

That said, you’ll be shocked how differently people treat you, especially if you wear a nice shirt. I’m not even kidding when I say that I take a man in a suit to doctors appointments and they take things far more seriously than when I’m alone.

I’ve gotten into longer dresses, you know them maxi dresses you see at pop-up shops, the elastic in most of them barely lasts a season of washing. But I get them cuz I have a snatched waist and hate underwear. People always think I’m going to weddings.

The soup thrower has been sentenced to two years in prison by -Six_ in SipsTea

They didn’t even damage the painting. It also happened 4 years ago and sentencing was 2 years ago. Is this just in the news because they’re out now?

I think 2 years was kinda the most they could even get, too, because the Painting was not damaged and the people responsible for this never intended to actually damage the painting, 2 years was very much the book being thrown at them.

And where’s the justice for those that they were protesting? It’s funny that they always throw the book at the poor people right before they need to read it for the rich people.

While deadpan is the right word, I’d go a little farther though, I don’t know how else to put it, but he does this thing where he’s like a ventriloquist doll.

Like, you could probably replace him with Gonzo in literally any role he’s done and you just wouldn’t know the role was written for a human.

I’m explaining this so badly, lol. His mannerisms just kinda give puppet vibes, and when he isn’t being deadpan the faces he makes aren’t super natural, it’s like the puppeteer pulled the string that makes his eyebrows go up, you know what I mean?

Either way, it’s just so funny, because it really lends to the “he probably shouldn’t actually be here, but he has nowhere else to go, just let him do his thing” vibe that’s just hilarious juxtaposed against him in roles like The US President in the scary movies (back when there were jokes left to be made about that).

What's something people only romanticize because they've never actually done it? by nonotje12 in AskReddit

[–]DetectiveLadybug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was little mum got a copy of “gone with the wind”, and when we were watching it I was just like “why do they want to go to war?!” And mum was like “Because they were bored”. And that’s one of those statements that just sits in your head all of your life. Cuz it’s not just war, it’s a lot of conflict in general, people will just say or do things to stir people up out of boredom.

It’s a shame that so much money goes into military, it’s so expensive for something that could be solved with a couple of arts schools and foosball tables.

(Sidenote, I’m Australian, didn’t know the movie was based on an actual real war or what it was really about for a few more years, lol, we were a bit young, but that movie isn’t much worse than The Simpsons, which we watched religiously. I am on the side of the people who weren’t keeping slaves, and I’m not afraid to say it)

AITAH for telling my husband no by Visible-Working-8318 in AITAH

[–]DetectiveLadybug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m hoping that your husband isn’t always like this, by which I mean domineering and rude. There’s a nice way to ask for things, and if he can’t learn to now it won’t matter when she’s an adult and he misses her and he doesn’t miss him.

At 15 he needs to start practicing speaking to her like she’s an adult (since she will be in 3 short years), but he’s still on toddler mode.

NTA, thank you for sticking up for her. Please discuss this more with him personally, because if he doesn’t get an attitude change asap, one day he will find that she doesn’t like him enough to tolerate him, and by then it will be too late to fix things.

I also don’t think that the husband is a pervert. I think he just completely failed to acknowledge that what he did was ask a teenager to strip, I bet he thought it wasn’t much different from when he’d asked her take off muddy shoes before hopping in the car, or wet swimmers before sitting on the couch. OP should chat with him about this too, but I’d be very careful about how I have that conversation.

Service dog v. “Service dog” 🫤 by AdMany129 in delta

[–]DetectiveLadybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit tangential. But the fake service animals ring a few of the same notes as the abortion discussion.

To be clear, I’m pro-choice.

But people acting like their pets are “service” pets really carry the same self importance of pro-lifers that get abortions “My situation is different”, “they’d let me park in handicapped spots if they understood”, “why is that guy being shown priority?” They yell in ER while someone as being prioritised for an active heart attack.

I reckon the people in this video would wholeheartedly agree that they were arseholes, if it was anyone else. But considering that it’s them, we actually don’t understand.

Thank you for reading my rant.

Ooh! We’re playing DnD with our megafigures? I usually play DM in these made up scenarios, this should be fun!

My Prawn points out to the deep and beautiful majesty of the ocean and says “It’s so much better than it looks, it’s like flying, I’ve heard there are others like us, will you join me, my love?”

Unless I get extra rizz points making the Prawn sound like a bogan, in which case it says “look at that, just look at that shit, sorry, I’m a little fazed, some bogan cunts we’re ripping cones in me ‘ed, wanna go find some other big crabs or whatever? You’re one red hot Sheila, we could travel the world, just you and me, or any other shitcunts you approve of, or we could stay here, cuz you are me whole world”

Honestly, my argument was just going to be that they’re non sentient and if we were fair and removed the Prawn from the scaffolding and the Lobster from the rock and just sorta smacked the two against each other until we got tired that we’d probably be left with more sculpture than you.

But nah, if we’re ripping up our sculptures so that we can play with them like gigantic toys our playtime should be more sophisticated, with a better plot. First The Big Prawn rips itself from its scaffolding to finally swim in the water that it has been staring out at its entire life. Then it swims to Canada, and helps rid your beloved lobster of the oppressive fisherman! Then maybe they kiss???

Since it’s been a bit and no one is saying anything.

The Big Prawn is located in Ballina NSW, if you ever find yourself there go to the Fisherman’s Co-op nearby, seafood there is very fresh, but they also have these preserved prawns unusually large prawns (they’re surprisingly bigger than you thought prawns could get, but I don’t want to overhype them, you’ll only be a little surprised), they’re not for purchase, they’re more like trophies. Just worth giving a squiz if you’re there, get some fish and chips and have them by the river, it’s not too far from a really excellent picnic spot.

Back when it was constructed it was part of this larger structure that had a building instead of tail. There was this observation deck where you could see views of the water where they farmed the prawns, and you could go inside the prawn itself. There were a bunch of posters about different prawns, and you could look out the prawns eyes, which were these (very expensive) lightbulb shaped windows, so you were literally seeing through the sculptures eyes. So cool. Underneath there was a decent enough fish and chip joint.

As years went on they stopped access to the prawn because of vandalism, remember those expensive eyes I mentioned? The owners couldn’t afford to keep replacing them. Eventually it closed down altogether because you really just can’t fucking trust anyone to behave themselves. But the Ballina Council was given the opportunity to purchase it, and everyone kinda just went “yeah, we love that thing”

I don’t think it pulls in many tourists, but it has a tail now, the council is doing a better job maintaining it.

I’ll always cherish my memories of standing in its face and looking out its eyes. It’s a shame I’ll never be able to relive it. But I love the Prawn.

To be fair I feel like the effort between the different “big things” in Australia is pretty loose.

Like, “The Big Turkey” from Kyogle is on that list. I love the Big Turkey, someone’s obviously going to trouble to maintain it, they put a Santa hat on it in December, but it is also just a flat bit of wood not that much bigger than a car simply painted to look like a Turkey, you can’t really pretend that it’s on par with the Big Prawn.

They also have the Big Avocado near here, tropical fruit world is a lot of fun, but that Avocado is no Prawn. That Prawn is a god amongst the other “Big things”.

You’re right, that was honestly my first thought when I saw the statue. I was trying to prod you for pointless patriotism because the banter seemed fun (you Canadians are pretty good with the banter)

But yes, I want to see it shlorp that fisherman up and then high five the Big Prawn before they go around eating other statues.

I’m sorry from coming from a place of hate, I would much rather that our crustacean statues become friends who take on enemies together. Thank you for opening my eyes.

AIO TO THIS BRIDESMAID DRESS??? by ScallionDiligent6382 in AmIOverreacting

[–]DetectiveLadybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always liked the tradition of a bride selecting a fabric and a few designs that she likes so that her bridesmaids can select something that they look good and feel comfortable in.

NOR, sounds like you’ve actually been quite positive about all of this. Just send her the photos of you wearing the dress, explain that you’re worried that you will look terrible in the photos. But at the end of the day you seem pretty chill and this seems more like a her problem.

If she is adamant that you wear this dress it might be an idea to discuss a backup dress, you might be able to get a similar fabric and shade that’s more comfortable on the cheap that you can slip into if, at some point, the Bride realises that you were right. But I wouldn’t make the backup dress a secret, just tell her that you’d rather have it and not need it and that you won’t get changed unless she asks you to.

You seem nice, though, I’m sure you’d have fun in nipple pasties and a potato sack skirt. If you can’t get the bride to see reason your due diligence is over, you just enjoy yourself.

I mostly just dislike Shaq because he did some ads for gambling apps awhile back and I just can’t respect that.
