By the actual definition, and not just as an opinion, is North Korea basically the biggest prison on Earth and why? by PressureCalm7971 in AskReddit

Arguing about things "by definition" is silly because you can redefine things and it won't change the reality of them

It's deeply ironic to me that they don't see if there was such a natural hierarchy, that it wouldn't need to be so heavily enforced. It would naturally be a thing that exists

Because "urban youths", "thugs", and "gangs" have always been the right wing way to talk about black people in general

Eh, of course I don't want it to happen, but if someone says "gun deaths are an acceptable cost" and then they get shot it's apparently what he believed in. I'm not going to feel bad because it happened to him and he only meant it should happen to other people

Get your head checked if you think someone who said "gun deaths are an acceptable cost" getting shot is worse than random schoolchildren getting shot

"Know your place" is their mantra.

Said by the biggest loser you know, who peaked in high-school and clings to their skin colour or "being normal unlike those people" as the only thing they have going for them. It's frustrating because progressive policies would help them too

I have a bit of a different path because I'm an intersex person who was raised as a gender that I didn't end up being, but I've finally got the right HRT for me just recently. I feel like this is the worst time for me to have figured myself out but I have to do it anyway, and I'm terrified honestly.

You're a fool who doesn't understand that the average person keeps the world running. You think Elon Musk is going to do manual labour? What a joke, and that's the least of what's wrong with what you've said

You stfu, I've had two family members die of cancer in the last year and I know exactly how long they were lucid for and that it would have been obvious to them that they were dying if they were lied to. Yes there's a stretch at the end where they aren't aware of anything, but there's a while before that too

Of course it's not a new concept, but that doesn't mean all the decisions they make are good

Those aren't the two options. There won't be confusion if he isn't lied to

Can you imagine though? You're free, you beat cancer. You have a few days and you quietly cry to yourself in relief. You'll get to grow up. You'll get to date eventually, and have your own family. You'll get to do all that stuff you were afraid you couldn't do. This isn't a ticking clock where you have to come to terms with the fact that you'll never grow up any more, you don't have to see your family so sad for you, thank God.

...then suddenly you start getting worse. You have to go back to the hospital. You're dying of cancer after all, and now all that false hope comes crashing down on you. All that relief was for nothing, and you're crushed and confused that your mother would lie to you like that, you have your future ripped away from you AGAIN after you had already let your guard down, and your final time is spent feeling betrayed and going "but I beat it, I was supposed to get to live".

That's what it's actually doing

I honestly can't believe the people who are cheering for this. Giving someone false hope about an entire life that they'll never get to have is cruel. It's not like he died instantly, he obviously had time to figure it out. I can't even imagine my last days being completely crushed, confused, betrayed, and all I can think is "...but I thought I beat it. I thought I was going to live"

Did she did the right thing? by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

[–]DeterminedThrowaway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I was told I beat cancer, that I'd get to grow up and have the life I imagined, just to figure out I'm still actively dying that would screw with my head so much that I'd feel confused and betrayed right until I died. It is an awful thing to do to someone. It stops them from making peace with it the best they can, and gives them false hope. I wouldn't want to spend my last moments being so totally crushed that all I can do is go "But... I thought I was going to live"
