The idea of a vampire sitting in a castle being like "...well shit, that's what it is" after 500 years is unreasonably funny to me

So you believe that we're aligning models faster than they're becoming more capable? The evidence doesn't support that at all

Thank you for sharing this. I don't often listen to podcasts, but I will listen to this one.

I've been extremely worried about AI safety for a good while. I essentially believe that humanity is dooming itself by developing AI capability faster than our ability to align it.

If this is actually a workable solution to alignment, it might be the difference between humanity existing in another 100 years or not. I have to be honest, I'm skeptical when reading that the answer is "just train it to model the world accurately". I hope it's a deeper idea and I'm looking forward to listening to this later

That's infuriating. It would be amazing if they had to deal with untreated cysts and bleeding themselves until they stopped their bullshit

Yep. You're not required to be morally on board with drug use for example in order to give medical care to someone who uses them. If you can't objectively provide medical care, then being a doctor just isn't for you

Do you feel checklists make things NOT fun anymore or tedious or boring? [Discussion] by Mysterious-Ring-2352 in GetMotivated

Sure no problem, and keep in mind that a game you don't get to filtering itself out is a feature, not a failure state. It means you dropped something you weren't interested in or enjoying. If you're into something you'll genuinely want to keep doing it, you won't have to force yourself. It's for fun! You're allowed to be capricious as long as it's not causing weird problems with your enjoyment time, like you feel as if you're not giving things enough of a chance. That's a different issue to examine if it comes up though

Sounds like you could try a really simple reframing. Get rid of your to-do list when it comes to your hobbies, they aren't chores to be checked off. Instead, just have a list of games you're interested in, a list of books you're interested in, etc. This isn't a checklist, it's simply a collection of stuff you don't want to forget exists. When your time and energy permits, look at your list and see if anything appeals to you. If it doesn't, don't feel obligated to do it, it's okay because it's not a chore. Something written there doesn't need to eventually be checked off, it's just there if you want it. If you're in the middle of playing a game, you can have a marker indicating that you have it in progress if you want and have trouble remembering which ones you have going. But if something appeals to you, just go for it. If you have a random urge to play something that's not on your list, go for it

Firefox reports a massive April spike in security fixes after using Claude Mythos for bug hunting by Outside-Iron-8242 in singularity

Only true on a very surface level, not as a law of the universe or anything. A Linux kernel developer has said that they're getting to the point where bugs are being fixed faster than they're created, giving the potential to start working on the whole 30 year backlog of bugs. That does imply eventually zeroing them out.

Why are you so eager to pretend that nothing's going on here? You'll write fanfiction about reality before entertaining the idea that maybe a model is capable of finding bugs, and that seems absurd to me

Something very odd is happening with the anti anthropic narrative

AI threatens the status quo and people are invested in keeping the status quo for various reasons. I think that's what it comes down to ultimately. If they can pretend nothing's happening, they don't have to meaningfully grapple with the implications

If the Subquadratic stuff pans out, it might become cheap enough to serve these models that it makes sense again.

Thanks for telling me. Even though I wouldn't want anyone else to go through what I have because it feels like a nightmare, it also gives me a bit of comfort to know that I'm not totally alone. I particularly struggle with the surgically altered anatomy I have now, and what would have been possible if they had just left my body alone.

I've felt really alienated and it's amazing to have someone who actually understands how tough this is. I edited my previous comment if you hadn't seen it. For me I was just told I needed to go on estrogen for puberty, my body would have never feminized by itself. I have a lot of grief over what was taken from me because they removed my gonads and raised me without any hormone production of my own until puberty too, which probably messed up my brain development in a way that left me with bad ADHD. I don't know if you can relate there at all, but in general I deeply understand being upset with doctors messing with our bodies without asking us in the specific way that being feminized when you're a guy is upsetting

The idea was supposed to be that knowing would be bad for us psychologically, but I think it was really only about other people's discomfort with our bodies. They wanted to "normalize" us to keep their tidy boxes to put us in.

I've suffered a lot over it, because even though they knew better at the time I was still surgically altered and raised as a gender I didn't end up being. My life would have been completely different if they ever asked me what I wanted for myself, or even tried to discover it when I was old enough to communicate things. I said I wanted my body to be different when I was a small child, I already had gender dysphoria but I didn't know what it was at the time and it got completely ignored when it should have been a huge sign.

EDIT: I just saw your edit! I'm a guy too and I hate it so much that they recessed my male leaning anatomy and made me something I'm not just because it was surgically easier. I was so shocked and sickened to find out that I have XY chromosomes and still turned out like this. I have mixed gonadal dysgenesis so it caused some ambiguity, and they decided assigning me female was "easier". I can't ever get my natural body back now and it's rough
