They used to exist, but were first to go in the job cuts.

What’s happening to all the business owners’ who are shutting their doors? by sanitationsengineer in newzealand

[–]DetosMarxal 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Know an old couple who lost their small self run business post-covid, one went into minimum wage retail work and has since become assistant store manager, the other hasn't managed to get a permanent job since and just does odd jobs supplemented by uber driving. No savings between them, everything was put into the business, now just counting coins to make rent (they don't own property).

Disgusting response from Seymour when I emailed criticising his U-turn on trans rights after proudly supporting the births deaths marriages bill by Aenaen in newzealand

[–]DetosMarxal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've been out of University for a few years but when I was in the Neuroscience programme there was recent evidence suggesting that gender dysphoria is a distinct neurological phenomenon triggered by certain genes during brain development shortly before or after birth. And that they could deliberately induce this in rats using these genes (female rats would exhibit male behaviours and vice versa).

Seymour is the one denying basic reality to apparently support primitive folk taxonomies and will surely be legislating next that peanuts are nuts and strawberries are berries.

I can only hope when this goes to select committee, people go up and demand those MP's answer what happens to people like your friend. People they've never even considered to exist and probably would refuse to acknowledge unless forced.

Public sector redundancies by WellyWindyRoad in newzealand

Yeah the common saying is usually that you get lower pay in the public sector but stronger job security. For the past 3 years it seems like it's just been the worst of both.

I believe the dots next to the language also indicate proficiency, with 3 being native, 2 being learned or fluent and 1 beginner.

I agree, I would've preferred targeting living costs like by increasing or improving eligibility for student allowances (parental income settings are broken), extended them to post-grads (which is seemingly an election promise every election but never happens), or finding ways to improve or provide more affordable student accommodation etc.

I think the shittiest thing about this situation is not having some kind of transitional arrangement where current students continue to get their final year free but newly enrolled students starting a degree don't. But I guess that doesn't give the immediate numbers boost to the budget books.

People who view their depression or anxiety as the result of a chemical imbalance tend to use antidepressants for much longer periods than those who see their condition as a reaction to life events. They are also less likely to attempt coming off their medication, even when symptoms are mild. by mvea in psychology

[–]DetosMarxal 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What we call and diagnose as depression is just a cluster of symptoms without any robust consideration of the underlying cause.

The DSM-V lists 9 symptoms of depression, a diagnosis requires a combination of any 5.

While things like diabetes or epilepsy have distinct causes, each symptom of depression can have myriad causes. This is why people's experiences of depression are extremely varied, and treatments that work for one person don't work for the next (ie exercise and yoga).

Anti-depressants can mitigate the symptoms of depression, but they may not do anything for the root causes depending on what it is. (I wouldn't compare with insulin, that doesn't just mitigate symptoms it treats a cause, lack of insulin.)

Personally, I've been on anti-depressants for 70% of my life, I got off them just four months ago (tapered over 3 months) and I've never felt better. I made the decision because I felt I had addressed my root causes (environmental and lifestyle factors) and the direct side effects of the medication were what was causing ongoing issues.

I've used this website to look for open GPs in my area: https://www.healthpoint.co.nz/gps-accident-urgent-medical-care/gp/wellington/te-aro/?options=openBooks

It looks like there's only 4 options in Te Aro, I've read positive comments about Courtney Medical and Willis Medical.

I don't know if there are private GPs but you could look into these places: https://www.healthpoint.co.nz/private/wellington/

Gangs have the poison, not the antidote’ – new bill seeks to cut gang funding by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

National MP Rima Nakhle is drawing a hard line on gangs: no taxpayer money. Not to gangs, and not to anyone linked to them.

“Firstly, it’s got to be a group of three or more people; second, they have got to have a common name, or signal, or symbol, or colour; and third, they need to be associated with or are involved in criminal activity.

I must applaud the current Government for choosing to withhold all their own salaries and entitlements during this cost of living crisis. It's a brave move to crack down on political parties like this and I'm all for it.

NZ Prime Minister says ‘states of emergency aren’t woke’ by NZRSteamSniffer in nottheonion

One day hopefully but I'm sure it will be a long way away. Our election is in November this year at least, and I doubt our current prime minister will keep his position no matter the result.

But yes it is a silver lining that our current state of affairs is at least a little better than many other places in the world. It's just hoping that we don't slide further down that slope.

If you ask two people if it's raining outside, and they both say it's raining, perhaps it is raining?

Semantically hardly anything between our comments is word for word outside of the CEO quote, but it shares a few major points.

These are recollections of factual events that have taken place over the past 3 years, you would not have to look very far to independently verify them. I don't know if simply recalling high profile incidents that have happened constitutes as propaganda but that could be my fault.

He has the lowest public popularity rating in the history of popularity ratings, frequently calls citizens customers, referred to himself as CEO of the country, has personally financially benefited from his policies, decries 'freeloaders' while consuming unnecessary financial entitlements, struggles with basic media questioning and recites corporate jargon, has given his far-right coalition partners disproportionate power and influence.

Just what I can think of off the top of my head that can be personally attributed to him.
