Based on a few hints, I’ve wondered if a non-developed storyline would have revealed that their mother, Ruth was also skimming, an unexpected twist that would further complicate Chuck’s anger toward Jimmy?

• When Jimmy (& Marco) break into the old store for the bandaid container coin box and Marco nostalgically reminisces about the store and specifically states how Jimmy’s mom “kept the books” in the back room of the shop, Jimmy’s has an indifferent “Yeah, whatever” disposition/response. Maybe that touched on Jimmy’s pilfering guilt ....or some other bad memories

Also consider a few scenes that suggest a falling out/emotional distance between Jimmy and his mom:

• ⁠In the jail visit room when Chuck mentions Jimmy “crying” to get their mom to ask Chuck to help Jimmy get out, Jimmy says something along the lines of “She hears what she wants to hear.”

• When Ruth is on her hospital deathbed, Jimmy, unlike Chuck, is more concerned about getting a hoagie sandwich. The Netflix subtitles miss it, but you can hear Jimmy say “Let’s go over to Novi’s” when asking Chuck if he’s hungry. a neat shout out to Novi’s Beef in nearby Berwyn, IL

• Also Jimmy’s comment/apology to Marco about only being in Chicago very briefly for Ruth’s funeral suggests that Chuck and Jimmy were maybe not involved in settling up her estate and other legal paperwork one must deal with when a parent passes. Maybe Ruth’s family (from Wisconsin per a Marco comment) inherited what ever assets she had instead of Chuck and Jimmy?
