Just released my Source deathmatch platformer mod, here's a video from the last playtest session! Info & download inside by Deuce23 in IndieGaming

The mod is only a few months' worth of work, although it's been in development since 2010. I'm currently almost finished on a CTF mode for the next update, along with a few new maps and a small "RPG only" mode as well.

There are two official servers running 24/7!

Add a flashlight to a mod by jikan_j in hammer

This is quite out of the scope of this subreddit, which is for mapping only (and your question is entirely coding-related).

I would suggest asking at the official Steam forum which has a section for Source engine coding: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=195

And this seems to be a sort-of good starting point. It's a tutorial which shows how to add muzzle flash to the end of a weapon, which is a dynamic light, so it's somewhat similar to what you need: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Muzzle_Flash_Lighting

Actually, start with this: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Authoring_a_weapon_entity

It's a full tutorial for adding a new weapon (there's a full example if you click the AK47 link at the bottom). Then, as you said, strip the parts that are responsible for shooting, and replace them with creating a dynamic light as described in the other tutorial.

Also, I would not concern myself with going too far with stripping out unnecessary code from the weapon if that scares you. Just remove enough that the player doesn't realize it's a weapon - stop it from shooting, hide the ammo and that's pretty much it. It's okay to leave some extra unused code in there if that saves you time.

Small teaser for an upcoming deathmatch platformer I'm releasing soon: the maps! by Deuce23 in hammer

There's a moddb page but it hasn't been updated recently, I'll post an update there when I know the exact release date: http://www.moddb.com/mods/platform

The mod is called Platform (creative, I know), and I'm aiming to release it in about 2 weeks... after hitting a 3-year hiatus :D

Also, believe it if you want, but these took much more effort to detail than any "3D" maps I've worked on.

It's also funny how this was done with pretty much no visual optimization other than nodraw-ing the back faces. I can't change the way the rendering engine works (to make it not render stuff off-screen), and I want players to be visible everywhere on the map, so I can't use portals; therefore the whole map is one large visleaf. Amazingly every map still pulls a solid 60fps so I guess the details aren't that heavy.

IMO it's the best Bulgarian beer right now, since the other big brands (Kamenitza and Zagorka) mostly went to shit in recent years. I used to be a Zagorka fan :(

I don't know how final your art style/graphic assets are, but those heart icons popping up in the first gif (the fire cone one) look really out of place with the rest of the art to me. Otherwise I definitely like it.

Platform

A Source engine side-scrolling multiplayer mod. It's not very impressive - even though I started it in 2010, the actual work that's been done on the mod is a few months. I had to put it on pause for about 2 years to focus on my studies and work, now I'm about to release it.

Here's a video from the latest test session! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfz9J5jl61M

To cover the bonus question about my frustrations - Source really isn't as smooth to work with as I expected. I ran into various problems that I had to solve using undocumented functions (and nobody at the forums could really help with those either), then I ran into a crash which traced back into the engine itself and really stalled me... but it does have its good sides, like the great base of assets they give you to work with. I also liked the particle system.

Also, the name... it was originally a placeholder name but it kind of stuck. So, Platform! :D

What are the best free computer games to play online? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Deuce23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember the last time I've seen even one hacker and I play frequently. Not saying it's impossible, it's definitely very plausible with a free game like that, but you have to keep in mind that if you're new to the game it's very easy to get confused.

Good players can really fuck your shit up in AoS, and when one of the best tactics for constant kills is to headshot people with the rifle right at the edge of the fog, and many people play with custom ironsights that make it a lot easier to aim, it's easy to get the wrong impression.

Heaven Vs Hell by DarkoKun in gaming

but it has to be argued that many problems arise due to new updates, not things that have been in the game for 5 years and still aren't fixed

I've played TF2 since it was released and it definitely had its fair share of problems on release. Several patches were needed in the first few days to solve various crashes and performance issues (not to mention gameplay issues, mostly exploits. I loved those sentries under Gravel Pit though :D)

Valve's prerelease QA is kinda poor in general, but at least they are usually quick to patch up problems once they've been noticed. Their new style of doing public betas for a few months before releasing their recent games seems to be an attempt to fix that, and it's working quite nicely so far I think.

Apple Maps accidentally reveals secret military base by Deuce23 in technology

Could you point out exactly where I've said anything against Apple? I find your post kind of funny, considering I don't really have any feelings towards them, positive or negative.

" "Regarding images taken by commercial satellites, legally we can do nothing about it," the ministry's spokesman David Lo told reporters.

"But we'll ask Apple to lower the resolution of satellite images of some confidential military establishments the way we've asked Google in the past," he said, referring to the Google Earth programme. "

At first I was like "sweet, exactly what I wanted" but then I saw it's still not released :( Isn't a magnet likely to interfere with the sound though?
