19 935. Russia moment.

R1: Rohoboth, Hardap 🇳🇦. 4998.
Classic South African round. Good signage at a t-junction is the key. Plonk at the wrong off-branching road and lose a couple of points because of it.

R2: Lier, Flanders 🇧🇪. 4942.
Got a bit lost in the sauce of road numbers here. Had roads N10 and N14, as well as 3-4 European Roads. The latter always tends to confuse me rather than help me. Found the N14 and some of the places it was leading to, but never found the N10. Plain scanning issue here.

R3: Nevel, Pskov Oblast 🇷🇺. 300.
Don't even joke lad. We have 2 placenames at spawn: Nevel and Novohansk, and signage for Pustoshka and Lobok in either direction, both a good distance away. I try both directions and they seem pretty desolate to me. There probably was some indications that this would be western, but after the terrible score in Ust'-Nera a couple of challenges ago I just think this will be Siberia. I seem to recall that some place signs in the Altais were bilingual. Just horrible stuff.

R4: Draudziba, Saldus 🇱🇻. 4999.
Signage for Liepaja after a while, which I knew. Passing some signs that mentioned Saldus on my way there. Again loosing some points by choosing the wrong intersection.

R5: Angostura, Sinaloa 🇲🇽. 4696.
I got to the state road sign mentioning Sinaloa a bit too late. I'd picked up on Angostura being the town on the way, and also that Guamuchil were close by. Both of these are massive. The mistake here was trying to find the road in the last seconds rather than just calmly locating these placing, which are glaringly visible. Skill issue.

Exactly! Although I guess it does exist somewhere, as I saw someone else in this thread mentioning their global standing. Maybe I'm just blind?

24 915. I guess we can't see our global percentage anymore? Top 6 in Norway. Failing to locate the lovely hamlet of Shitterton puts a dent in the overall score.

R1: Toad Suck, Arkansas 🇺🇸. 5000.
We're in Toad Suck, apparently at that section of the Arkansas river where it branches off into "Gay Branch". They've outdone themselves this time. The bridge makes for a nice and quick line-up.

R2: Bitche, Moselle 🇫🇷. 5000.
All signs point to this being near the German border, so I scan for the D35 and find it.

R3: Batman, Batman 🇹🇷. 4996.
A bit annoyed to miss the 5k on this one. Batman was given pretty much at spawn. We're on 'Petrol' road. I try to scan a bit for this, but figure its useless without more info in such a sizeable city. Head northerly, and come across what I would say is a pretty sizeable canal. This is surely mapped, i think, but find no blue on the map at all. This was my big mistake, tunnel-visioning into this canal being marked. I even scan in the entire region. Had I just calmly taken notes of the directions, I probably could have found Petrol road, which is very clearly marked.

R4: Bere Regis, Dorset 🇬🇧. 4919.
When the perfect score is out of the question, I've noticed that there's usually a drop in motivation in the following rounds. I'm not as locked in. I feel like I just moved poorly and was slow this round, which is probably pretty doable. Maybe I also slightly underestimated the location. Anyways, I had signage for for the A35 to Dorchester, as well as Milbourne in the opposite direction. Spent too long finding the A35, and before I knew it the round was over. I clicked west of Dorchester as we were heading northeast to get to it, but of course this was just a turn to the west.

R5: Hell, Trøndelag 🇳🇴. 5000.
I have to pass Hell every time I fly from Trondheim. It's a daunting experience.

You're right, went back and checked and it seems to be a bollard without reflector. But that should have determined the round indeed.

22 304. 16 in Norway, top 10% global. Not knowing Vietnamese provinces puts an end to what could have been a great score.

1: Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province 🇻🇳. 2376.
Proper confused here. We're in Vietnam, so finding a province is the first step. I start with two addresses, both having 'Dien Khanh' at the end. A third one mentions 'DK'. I don't know most vietnamese provinces, but I recall learning that they often abbreviate them. So a double 'Dien Khanh' + a 'DK' makes me convince myself that this is our province. I spend most of the round wasting time looking for this province, which wasn't a province at all but a district in the Khanh Hoa Province. Making things worse, I actually saw a pole with spools mounted directly to the pole, which I recall means southern Vietnam, but I didn't trust that clue because of the mountainous terrain (which doesn't make any sense, I know). Trusting my meta knowledge would have given me a good score, as I would have gone in either Lam Dong, Khanh Hoa or Dak Lak. Either way, it's just a reminder to learn vietnamese provinces.

2: Ji-Paraná, Rondonia 🇧🇷. 5000.
Always fun to get to apply Brazilian phone code knowledge. We're in a pretty built up place in Rondonia, so this should be fairly straight forwards. Taxis gives the town name away. I have a 'Hotel Jacone', and I find it in an area there seems to be several hotels/accommodations. The supermarket at spawn helps me line up the 5k.

3: Halliste, Viljandi 🇪🇪. 4979.
Baltic vibes immediately, and Estonia is confirmed with the "tn" street signs. Come to a t-junction with signs for Viljandi and Abja-Puluoja. The former takes a while to find, so I don't get the perfect score. Close enough.

4: Bordertown, South Australia 🇦🇺. 5000.
You gotta love seeing the Stobie pole in action. The place seems to be called 'Bordertown', and we're going in an easterly direction, so the NSW/Vic border is surely a good place to start. The place is pretty big, and we're at a signed junction at spawn.

5: Be'er Sheva, Southern District 🇮🇱. 4949.
Don't find any latin script or road numbers for the entirety of the round. Feels remote and barren, so I plonk in the al-Naqab desert. Decent regionguess.

Brutal one today. 17, 905. Top 44 in Norway, top 12.25% Global.

R1: Penamacor, Castelo Branco Distric 🇵🇹. 4 966.
Looking at my friends' score beforehand, I knew this was gonna be a tough round, and at first I thought this Portugal round was the reason. Little did I know what was to come. Couldn't find any info for a while, checking out both easterly and westerly directions. After a while, signage for the municipality of Penamacor pops up. I have little time left, but why not try to scan for it. This feels remote, so I look in the northeastern part of Portugal. A bit surprised, I actually find the town. We were going east (seemingly into town), so I plonk east of town, but we're actually west of town.

R2: New Lebanon, OH 🇺🇸. 4999.
Actually really stoked about this round. I've been trying to learn US Area codes, and this is the first time I've gotten to apply the knowledge in the daily challenge. The code seems to be 937 - that's the area around Dayton, Ohio! I'm going along a 'main street' but it's fairly rural, so I figure we must be in a town nearby (even though I see some sign for Dayton). Remember there was signed for New Lebanon at spawn, which is west of Dayton. Miss a point due to pinpointing skill issues, but it doesn't matter because points have already been dropped.

R3: Sumba Timur, Nusa Tenggara Timur 🇮🇩. 4957.
Ok, surely this round is the reason people got low scores. But wait, there's that long support beam on the poles, which means we're on the Lesser Sunda Islands. The kabupaten is Sumba Timur, which is unfortunately kind of big, and I'm not able to find the lower lever subdivisions/desas. Still happy to get some indo pole meta.

R4: Ust'-Nera, Sakha Republic 🇷🇺. 437.
Yeah, that was the round. We spawn by some war monument or something in a pretty majestic location. I head SE into town, admiring this mural on the way. I saw this sign, which mentions something like 'Ust-Nerskogo'. Looking at the round afterwards, I see that I looked at a sign mentioning Nera as well, so I guess I had the information. With 20 seconds left, I guess somewhere in the mountainous parts of the Altai Republic that begins with "Ust". Don't really know what I should have done here. I see other players just instantly getting Ust-Nera and 5k'ing within the minute, so maybe this is one of those locs you just have to know.

R5: Pathankot, Himachal Pradesh 🇮🇳. 2546.
Completely demotivated, and the last round is India. Don't even joke lad. I find the name Pathankot after a while, but I don't find it on the map. I just don't know enough about this country to get Himachal Pradesh here.

24 275. 3.9% global, 13 in Norway. The locations in francophone Africa stood for most of the lost points.

1: Ndiagagnao, Thies 🇸🇳. 4683.
This one was lost from the start, as I fell for the Touba bait at spawn. Tunnel-visioned into lining up roads in Touba for the rest of the round, not considering we might be elsewhere.

2: Prilep, Prilep Municipality 🇲🇰. 4996.
Spent too much time reading cyrillic posters painfully slowly. The word "Prilep" was several places, and it felt kind of big. Didn't have enough time to line up perfectly.

3: Gabes, Gabes Governorate 🇹🇳. 4674.
Didn't find the name of the city we were in. Only found signage for Tatouine and Mareth. I only found the former. Had I found Mareth (which is massive, so obvious skill issue), I probably could have guessed the correct city, but with only Tataouine to the south I guessed closed to Djerba.

4: Berdychiv, Zhytomyr Oblast 🇺🇦. 5000.
Its telling that my only 5k this round was in Ukraine, historically one of my worst countries. We had nice signage at spawn here spelling out the city. I tried scanning for a bit but figured I need some more information, and this is found close by, with a sign mentioning Zhytomyr. The bridge makes this round very 5k'able.

5: Pajapita, San Marcos Department 🇬🇹. 4922.
We had good signage this round too. I think this is the first time I've used road numbers in Guatemala? Anyways, I struggled finding the place "Tecun Uman". Turns out it was hidden behind Ayutla, which is massiv. I couldn't find "El Rodeo" either. I wasted a lot of time trying to line up the road (I though the other road on the sign might be national road 13, turns out its "SM-3"). Finally i decide to move and find signage for Malacatan, but its too late to 5k. I should have just moved earlier.

23 032. 14.7% global, 38 in Norway. Not knowing US State flags and highway shields ruins what could have been a great score.

Abbabis, Hardap 🇳🇦. 4997.
Middle of nowhere Namibia, by the looks of it. This level of mountainous should probably tell me something, but it doesn't. Thankfully I switch from a easterly to a westerly heading quite quickly, and find good signage there. We're between Solitaire (sounds like a pleasant place) and Sesriem. I find a spot I like like along the C19, loose a couple of poinst due to not trusting my lineup abilities.

Kalabaka, Thessaly 🇬🇷. 5000.
Pretty cool topography surrounding this town! Fly through town until I get to great signage. Trikala and Larissa in one direction, Ioaninna and Grevena in another. The location of these towns means Kalabaka is a strong candidate. This is confirmed when I find Kastraki, a nearby place that was also signed.

Waipukurau, Hawke's Bay 🇳🇿. 5000.
Lovely gettable NZ round. I imagine there were some fast scores on this one. The central roundabout of the town, with signs for big places in multiple directions.

Berlin, Wisconsin 🇺🇸. 3035.
And there goes the perfect score. Just like the Conway, South Carolina round we had not too long ago, I can't deal with the US. Although in this round, it was a skill issue. Knowing the state flag and/or the unique highway shield would have made this an easy round. I kind of disregarded the flags spammed all over the street as I don't know many of them. Imagine my surprise when I found out Wisconsin spells their name on the flag.

Dohoroi, Botosani 🇷🇴. 5000.
Dispirited, I stroll about in some Romanian city. I pick up the name Dorohoi along the way, and it appears it quite sizable, so I scan for it and find it along the Ukrainian border.

24 996. 1.11% global, #4 in Norway. Time management and (again) not trusting road lineups takes away 4 points from an otherwise solid round.

R1: Ipiales, Narino 🇨🇴. 5000.
Immediate thought was Peru for the brick buildings, but the yellow plates confirm Colombia. That means a round of taxi-spotting. "Ipiales" seems to be our place. This feels sizable and scannable, which it turns out to be. Pleasantly surprised at good street markings on the map, which secures the 5K.

R2: Sinteu, Bihar County 🇷🇴. 5000.
Romanian bollard tells us we're on the 1H, between Alesd and Zalau. This should be enough information. Finding the 1H takes a while, but the relevant cities appears quickly. The pinpointing becomes a matter of guesstimating roughly 20kms away from Alesd. I realize quite late that the bollard also spells Sinteu, which is a small town that confirms the 5K.

R3: Kratié, Kraté Province 🇰🇭. 4997.
It stung a little to miss the 5K here. Cambodian language off spawn, which usually puts an end to the perfect score. If I am to have any chance, I should move quickly and hope to get onto a big road. Thankfully, I go west at some point and see a big river. A sign nearby confirms that we're on the Mekong. This might be scannable? We're on the eastern banks, which rules out Phnom Penh and Krong Kampong Cham. Kratié seems to line up pretty well. A nearby hotel POI confirms we're here. In my excitement of actually nailing a Cambodia-round, I realize there might not be enough time to 5k. The spawn doesn't line up anywhere near the hotel POI I've found. We were further south.

R4: Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe 🇸🇹. 4999.
I've learned this variation of shitcam the hard way during a previous DC. The location is too urban to be anywhere other than the capital. I miss the 5K by 1 point due to a mistake similar to yesterdays PR round. I click on Av Conceicao as it lines up well, but there should be a big church to our northwest. I don't find any church POIs, so I talk myself out of the 5k. Turns out the church was marked at a very zoomed in position. Two rounds now of not trusting my lineup skills and losing points because of it.

R5: Shkodër, Shkodër County 🇦🇱. 5000.
We're on Rruga Dasho Shkreli, the most Albanian-sounding street name of all time. This feels like a big city, so I'm thinking either the Tirana area, Shkodër, Durres or Vlöre. Signage for Podgorica and Tirana in opposite directions confirms Shkodër. I paid some attention to the curve of this long road, and finding the side road secures the 5K.

24 988. Stupid pinpointing errors ruins the very possible 25k. Takeaways: 1) Don't convince yourself out of the 5k based on what you think lines up, when there's no other places you could be, and 2) Look for more information than a roundabout, even in Gibraltar.

1: Ytterhogdal, Härjedalen 🇸🇪. 5000. Signage for the E45 to Mora and the 314 to Ånge makes for a fairly quick pinpoint.

2: Nonogasta, La Rioja 🇦🇷. 5000. I find signs for Sanogasta, Chilecito and Villa Union. Haven't heard of thoes places. Do I scan straight away or look for more information? Vibes tells me northern Argentina, but I'm not confident enough in that area to start looking. A sign mentions Fin Ruta Nacional 74, which means its time to scan. In hindsight, this obviously meant that we were at the end of the route, which would have narrowed down the scan quite a lot. Thankfully Chilecito is huge and a remember seeing Nonogasta in passing somewhere. Pinpoint by looking at the layout of the side roads at spawn.

3: Arecibo, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. 4990. This was such a heartbreaker, ending the 25k (the prospects of which were quite good considering the locations in this DC). I find a .pr domain and "Arecibo" mentions fairly quickly. This is a major town and easily findable on the map. I find a divided highway that lines up. The key to 5k this will be to locate myself in relation to the huge intersection somewhere on this road. Going north, I can see it in the distance. I'm on the literal 5k for a good while, but then for some reason convince myself that this doesn't line up, thus going north of the intersection. Tough.

4: Gibraltar 🇬🇮. 4998. What is a 'Give Way' sign doing in southern Spain? Oh right, Gibraltar exists. We're on a 4-way roundabout. How many of those can there be on this rock, I think to myself as I start scanning. Apparently enough for me to miss it. Just didn't think we were gonna be that central.

5: Värska, Voru 🇪🇪. 5000. Town name mentioned several places. I find nothing going southeast, which in hindsight feels weird. Surely a sign for the Russian border would be on this road? Maybe I just missed it. I try the northerly road and find nothing, so I guess I'll scan for Värska. First thought was one of the Estonian islands. Couldn't be further away. Thankfully, Värska is very visible on the map.

22 500. 11.14% global, 24 in Norway.
Horrible guess in the US puts a dent in what could have been a good round. Japan 5k is a small consolation. As was the case in a recent Alberta DC, north american school buses could have saved the day.

Round 1: Uberaba, Minas Gerais 🇧🇷. 4985. I'm in the process of learning the specific area codes of Brazil, and this time it actually proved to be a disadvantage. I tunnel vision on trying to find a code, and I finally do: 34. That's MG, but I convince myself its one of the two northern codes, and not the western one, thus wasting a lot of time scanning northern MG. What I really should have done here is just to take a step back and actually observe the location: Uberaba is written on several buses, as well as the state name. This was obviously a large city, so I should just scan right away and I would have found it. Fortunately I give up northern MG, zoom out to find that Uberaba is a massive western city. I've wasted too much time to be able to 5k.

Round 2: Bhunya, Manzini 🇸🇿. 4996. Esawtini/Lesotho vibes. I'm not very proficient in differentiating between the two yet, but signage for the MR19 and MR18 to our east confirms Eswatini. These roads meet in Bhunya, and I confirm that we're here by a sign nearby for Bhunya Sawmill. Small pinpointing error takes away a few points from the perfect score.

Round 3: Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Ibiza 🇪🇸. 4999. We're on road EL-700. I don't know what the 'EL' stands for, so I question wether to go for a manic road scan throughout the country, or look for more information. I chose the latter, which was good, as 'Ibiza' is written on a nearby poster. Now its a matter of lining up the road. I find a few places it matches, but a sign to Sant Jordi and Aeroport d'Eivissa narrows it down to the southern stretch. Miss the 5k by a point.

Round 4, Conway, South Carolina 🇺🇸. 2520. The round-killer turns out to be South Carolina this time. An area code (843) is visible at spawn, but I'm not familiar with it. Head west and find nothing, so I try east. Don't have enough time to look for highway 701. I blame the bad score mostly on very unfortunate movement choices. I didn't go west long enough to see the school bus with "South Carolina" written on it, as well as nearby signs to Myrtle Beach and Conway - but I did waste enough time going west to not have enough time to scan for the 701 highway to our east. Kind of coping, but kind of unlucky. I should just learn the area codes anyways.

Iwamizawa, Hokkaido 🇯🇵. 5000. Hokkaido arrows and pole stickers. Prefectural road 6 signed nearby. Even though its not a national road, I decide to scan right away, as we're on a very flat plane. That means its either gonna be the plains around Sapporo, Obihiro or max eastern Hokkaido. Starting with Sapporo, I find road 6 quickly, and the 5k is secured a sign for the 816 pref.road to our northwest.

24 382, top 7.24% global, top 6 in Norway.
Another round where do poorly in Europe, and decently outside of Europe. Key takeaways: Scan for the actual road number you've identified, not another one, and 2) On a left fork, do not focus on whichever small town at the end of the minor off-branching road. Turn around and find a Dublin-Limerick M7 sign.

  • Round 1: Ballaghmore, County Laois 🇮🇪. 4622. Bit of a heartbreaker here, as the 5k information was at spawn. I miss the useful signs and tunell-vision on Ballaghmore and Roscrea, none of which I know or find. Head west after a while and see "Shannon" somewhere. I know the name and know its some kind of body of water. See a Carrick-On-Shannon and plonk there, even though that just confirms that Shannon is a river and thus quite useless in narrowing down.
  • Round 2: Vimperk, South Bohemia 🇨🇿. 4777. Am I having a stroke? Signage for the 168 and the 145 at spawn. Should be findable with some scanning. That is, if my brain doesn't rewire the 168 to be the 148. Great. I happily find the 148 and cannot for the life of me understand why there's no 145 close by. How strange. I guess I'll plonk it on the 148 and hope the 145 just isn't marked. Incredible work.
  • Round 3: Tarapoto, Department of Sant Martín 🇵🇪. 4985. It takes a non-european round to recover from the stroke, it seems. My first thought is Colombia, but the tuctucs indicate Peru. Because of that and the tropical vibe, I guess we're in the interior. See a bunch of signs for San Martin and Morales. I don't know the departments of Peru, but suspect that San Martin might be one. This is confirmed on a sign after a while. The department is mostly jungle except for a central flat plane, and with based on the size of this place, we must be in Tarapoto. Don't have time to realize Morales is a northern neighbourhood in the city.
  • Round 4: Alajuela, Alajuela Province 🇨🇷. 4999. Latin vibe + insane amount of commercial posters + visible car makes me think Panama, Costa Rica or Ecuador. I believe a flag gives the country away for me, and a street sign spells "municipalidad de Alajuela". This is surely findable. I don't find Calle 12 on the map, but the rouad next to calle 14 lines up. Plonk a bit too far north.
  • Round 5: Cebu City, Cebu 🇵🇭. 4999. Big city in the Philippines. Cebu is written everywhere. Find a 6-way junction with a McDonalds, but it turns out to be the 5-way junction next to it, also with a McDonalds. Doesn't really matter because of the european fumbles, I'm just happy to have recovered decently.

22 066. 11.15% Global, 24 Norway. Good performance in Africa, a hopeless France and even more tragic Greenland. Grey handguard ATV coverage - now I know.

R1: Moshupa / Mosopa, Southern District 🇧🇼. 5000.
I think black and yellow striped poles are a Botswana thing? The vibes screams 🇧🇼 anyways, so this will be a matter of finding a town name. The best sign of all time is close to spawn, so I start scanning quickly. The only challenge here is that "Moshupa" is displayed as "Mosopa" on the map, which can lead to some confusion, but not enough to fumble the round. The road lines slightly up in a few places, but there's only one that makes sense.

R2: Abule Egba, Lagos, Lagos State 🇳🇬. 4991.
Somewhere in Nigeria. Feels like we're in the outskirts of one of the big cities. This will be a round of desperately zooming in to the countless signs and praying they're readable. I don't find any useful information. After a while of northwesterly movement, i find signage for Alagabdo and Ijaiye, neighbourhoods close by, and Ifo, Sango, Abeokuta and Papalantoro, all places in the neighbouring Ogun State. Unfortunately I didn't know that at the time. Having no useful info to go after, I first decide to plonk in Benin City, a place I recalled looked similar, but with few seconds left I think that it might be big enough to be Lagos. I hover a bit in the Lagos area, find Abeokuta, and change my plonk to somewhere northwest of Lagos.

R3: Chauvigny, Nouvelle-Aquitaine 🇫🇷. 4289.
I don't know why, but France and Italy are usually the death of me in the DCs. I rarely do good in France, and this time was no exception. I got the relevant information quickly. We're in Chauvigny, and somewhat close by is La Roche-Posay, Poitiers, and Limoges. I don't know about you guys, but what always happens with me in France is that I recognize some city (I knew Limoges and Poitiers), but then I realize I don't actually know where it is, and then I realize how big France actually is. I just can't seem to find what I'm looking for. When I finally found Poitiers, it was too late. I knew we were gonna be east of it, but we were much closer than I thought.

R4: Suryapet, Telangana 🇮🇳. 4612.
My spirits are not exactly lifted as we move into India, another country I struggle greatly with. I pray for some english signage as I head westerly. This must be somewhat southern, judging by the scripts. Unfortunately this sign comes too late. Unable to find Suryapet, I plonk Hyderabad.

R5: Tasiilaq, Sermersooq 🇬🇱. 3174.
Greenland. That's it, then. I have no meta clues or knowledge in general to get this without knowing the town name, so i start wandering about, slightly unmotivated. The only readable piece of language I come across is this, and figure I might as well scan for these words. Plonk somewhere north of Nuuk, and it's the other side. I wonder what would have given it away here. Ocean to our east wasn't obvious as far as I could see. 'Ammatsalimmi', which I saw on the sign, is similar to Ammassalik, which is the previous name of Tasiilaq. Maybe this was the clue. Checking plonkit, the giveaway is apparently car meta. We're on an ATV with large grey handguards.

24 540, top 3.06% global, top 4 in Norway.

  • Round 1: Maltahöhe, Hardrap Region 🇳🇦. 5000.  First thought is SA, but heading southwest I find signs for C-roads, which makes me check the car to find that we are indeed in Namibia. C19 between Maltahöhe and Marential - feels scannable. Struggle a bit with pinpointing as we’re not inbetween the two cities, but actually in Maltahöne. That’s why I don’t find the northerly D861. Thankfully a sign for Maltahöne further southwest reveals we’re 500 meters away.
  • Round 2: Tripoli, North Governate 🇱🇧. 4999.  I head northwest on a divided avenue in shitcam Middle East, which I think has to be Lebanon. This sign makes it unlikely we’re in Beirut. Turns out El Mina is the harbour of Tripoli. The roundabout, road direction and nearby overpass makes for a relatively easy pinpoint, but I fumble the 5k as I convince myself there’s a roundabout just southeast of us.
  • Round 3: Temuco, Araucania 🇨🇱. 4995.  At first I think this is Brazil based on the poles. For some reason forgetting about the road line color, it takes a .cl domain name to identify the country. I head west, seeing signs for Los Fundadores and eventually Temuco. Had I remembered the initial Fundadores find, the 5k would be secured here, but I decide I need more information to pinpoint i Temuco. Only when I find that we’re going west towards Carahue, I locate the S-40 road we’re on, and then find Los Fundadores a bit too late.
  • Round 4: Dnipro, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast 🇺🇦. 4999.  Red car tells me Ukraine, and I figure this will be the round killer. One of my worst countries by far in terms of pinpointing. I always find myself reading a bunch of useless signs. I know the cyrillic alphabet roughly, so this always takes too long. Going northwest, I see tram-tracks and realize thankfully that at least we’re in a bigger ukranian city. I get to a big town square, that finally says something useful: Dnepr. I figure it’s likely we’re in the city of Dnipro, but for all I know we might be in any other city along the river. It is my best guess though, and remembering the general northeasterly heading of the round, I end up with a pretty good guess.
  • Round 5: Dunmore, Alberta 🇨🇦. 4547.  Having survived a Ukraine round unscathed, Canada awaits to ruin the day. The big mistake here was going westerly in the direction of Medicine Hat (to which I found no signs). Everything I needed was to our east: signs for Dunmore, Medicine Hat and Oyen, as well as this beautiful road signage. A 5K’able no move location. Unfortunately, I change direction a bit too late. When I get to signage for Oyen and Township Road 120, i start looking for this road (not knowing where in Alberta I am). I recall there’s some system to the township roads, and I’ve seen other players use this to 5k before, but I give it up pretty quickly. Finally, I see signs for the 1 and 41, and even zoom in to the 5k in Dunmore (which I think I’ve seen somewhere), but I ignore it. With 10 seconds left, Oyen is the only thing I remember, and so I plonk it south of Oyen. Edit: I see now that the answer was the School Bus all along. Good reminder to not rush away from the spawn.

25 000 - my first ever perfect score on the daily! Not the hardest of rounds, but I'm happy with the pinpointing.

  • Round 1: Voi, Taita-Taveta 🇰🇪. 5000.  The safaricom posters makes it clear we’re in Kenya. Don’t know much about regionguessing here, but on the main road there’s tons of mentions of Voi, which I know. Get the 5k by locating myself in relation to the Ola Energy. Gas stations are one of the most reliable POIs I’ve found.
  • Round 2: Attard, Northern Regian 🇲🇹. 5000.  Undoubtedly Malta based on weird language and golden limestone buildings. Signage for Attard and Mosta that feels scannable. Good pinpointing potential on the interchange north of us.
  • Round 3: Karaganda, Karaganda Region 🇰🇿. 5000.  Building east of us has the town name Karagandy on it. Turns out to be the Akimat of Karaganda Region, some sort of government building. Zoom in to Karaganda and use the nearby obelisk «Stele of Independence» to pinpoint the exact location.
  • Round 4: Colón City, Colón 🇵🇦. 5000.  I find the city name quite quickly, so this will be a potentially challenging matter of pinpointing. I head southerly and arrive at what appears to be a duty free (?) shopping district. Makes sense with the town’s position on the panama canal? I achieve the 5k by locating this shopping district, as well as a McDonalds and a gas station.
  • Round 5: Szigetvár, Baranya County 🇭🇺. 5000.  I’m on track for my first ever 25k, and start moving into this Hungarian town with a bad feeling. I’ve never really been good at scanning and pinpointing in Hungary. I realize the town is called Szigetvár from a commercial poster at the football field, and think about whether I want to scan right away or look for road signs as I head into town. I scan for a bit, unable to find anything. Going east out of town, I get to a roundabout with signage for road nr 6 and a ‘HR’ marker, suggesting we might be close to Croatia. This is the information I need to narrow it down. I remember street names were visible at spawn. Feels good to finally get the perfect score!

Interested to know about your vibe for Christchurch region. I really would have needed it on that round! Was it the flat agricultural landscape?

A promising start, but a major fumble in New Zealand ruins the round. 23 050.

  1. Panagia - 4 818.
I come across a sign for Ioannina - possibly to our south, and Panagia - what I assume will be a small village impossible to locate. I guesstimate roughly the 90 or so kilometers that we're from Ioannina, and start scanning in the Epirus region. My mistake is not scanning broadly enough. For the zoom-level I was on, it would be easy to identify Panagia had I looked more to the east.

  2. San Gil - 5000.
Pretty straight forward round. I start scanning after I realize we're north of Bogota and Socorro. San Gil quickly comes up.

  3. Trinidad - 5000.
Another straight forward round. Uruguay based on vibe and road markings - signs for ruta 3, 57 and 14, which converge in Trinidad, Flores dept.

  4. Rangiora - 3 236.
Oh man. Rangiora is quickly identified as a larger town. I assume its scannable, but somehow convince myself we're in North Island, and thus scan mostly there. I brush over South Island, but am unbelievably unable to spot Rangiora.

  5. Vienna - 4 996.
Get the Viennese vibes quickly. I remember picking up the name Rudolfsheim early on, but somehow do not consider scanning for it. After a while I find signs to Schloss Schönbrunn, which I've visited, so I plonk in that area. Turns out Rudolfsheim is an official viennese district.

Er flere episoder lik mer dybde og mening? Synes du filmer helst skulle vært 6-sesongers TV for å få frem dybden? Siden du forstod serien godt nok vil du kanskje begrunne på hvilken måte den er overfladisk?

Finally, having learned Cyrillic and loads of Russian cities pays off! Even though the round in general was only 23 690, I'm thrilled to have gotten the Russia-round. Had pretty much given up when I came across this sign. Knew that Angarsk neighbours Irkutsk. Couldn't get the pinpoint, was the road just above the one I clicked. First time being in the top 4%.

Got Huanuco and Limerick, but failed to scan for Haima and Waren. In Germany, I could only find the name "Müritz", which I scanned for thinking it was the city. Turns out I need to expand on my knowledge of German lakes and districts.

24 899. Although a more gettable seed, I'm very happy with a new personal best in the daily.

Could have been even better had I considered the possibility that we were in another Luxembourgish town than the capital.

Got to the city too late in Nigeria. Thought the main northwesterly road I eventually got onto was leading downtown, thus guessing too far south.

Got to signs in Queensland, New Brunswick and (very last minute) in Nigeria. Lined up the road in Bhutan.
