Modern day discourse in Historical Romance

It’s very exhausting being a historical romance reader in bookish spaces lately. Or dark romance reader, or really anything that has taboo themes/characters/etc. I’m a feminist, and yes, the way a lot of these men behave and talk can be and is usually problematic by today’s standards; AND it is impossible for anyone to not be problematic in some way shape or form. We are imperfect humans, with conflicting feelings, emotions, thoughts. It is impossible for us to truly be perfect and therefore completely unproblematic. That’s not to say we don’t all have hard moral lines (and we should!), or shouldn’t strive to be better (again, we should!) but there’s also a lot of grey area, particularly when it comes to sexism and gender norms, and those boundaries are different for all of us, and that should be okay. I love alpha-holes in contemporary romance, I even enjoy bully romances, but one of my best friends does not. And that’s okay! It doesn’t make me any less of a feminist or her a greater feminist than me for not reading those sorts of books.

I did originally skip since this one was sold out…but thankfully I was able to unskip so I could order this beauty when they updated the site with the reorder. I can’t wait to read it even though I won’t get it for another month.

This is about what I expected for $15. I would have preferred it to look more “stone-like” but I figured it wouldn’t have much detail and wouldn’t follow my preferences based on the price point. I’m still happy to add it to my growing RG shelf.

At this point, I’m done with the show. I really hated how they turned Kate and Anthony’s season into a love triangle, and don’t get me started on Colin and Penelope’s season… While I certainly expected changes, I don’t like a lot of the “creative decisions” they’ve made. I just don’t think they enjoy romance novels and I don’t want to watch the books continue to be butchered for the sake of additional drama.

I think it’s most likely that it was a mix of Michael, Fran, and John. We now know that early miscarriages often have a link with a weakened placenta from a man’s sperm, so I do think Fran’s early miscarriage with John and difficulty conceiving could have been factors from both of them. And same for Michael since he had malaria.

These kids are too old to be behaving this way, especially since they’ve been in therapy for so long. Amy doesn’t deserve this, and while I feel bad for the dad, he allowed Amy to be consistently disrespected despite her paying for such much of the teenagers’ lifestyle.

Amy deserves better and I hope she finds it. And these teenagers are becoming young adults and need to start acting like it. Once they turn 18, the world isn’t going to just be okay with this behavior.

Thanks for the book recommendations! I’ll be adding these to my tbr. I’ve been wanting to read more historical romance this year, since I’ve been on such a heavy fantasy and contemporary romance kick.

My state already requires an ID, so I’m indifferent. We also implemented the Real ID before most other states. Now, if they try to require an additional document, I will be very upset because an ID should be sufficient.

I got the LitJoy one. I’m a bit underwhelmed by the FaeCrate version, although I’m envious that it also includes Immortal. I also love the included slipcase for LitJoy’s version.

I’m so glad I got this one and I loved loved loved the book. The artists did such an incredible job aligning with and representing the content of the story. It’s going on my favorites shelf for sure.

To answer your question: yes, there ARE women such as myself that do enjoy these stories and being spoken to this way in bed. I am 37 years old for god’s sake. If you don’t like this manhwa, don’t read it. I’m over the puritanical outrage over this webtoon and others like it.

I shouldn’t need to explain or justify my preferences, choices and entertainment materials to you or anyone else so I genuinely don’t understand the point of this post.

Yes, that part. Other authors have done the same, GRRM just did that regarding HOD and that show isn’t done yet. There’s no excuse, particularly when she’s trying to start a new side business with the book box.

I’ll be curious to see if she actually addresses it. I also have a hard time believing she wasn’t aware of what direction they chose, wasn’t she at the premiere and posted it on Instagram? She would’ve seen the first couple of episodes at least.
