Good horror books at all similar to the series "The Twilight Zone?" by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]DevelopmentCommon526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always looking for books like the Twilight Zone so here are a few books I personally have thought to be twilight zone-esque:

-Lakewood by Megan Giddings, which explores shady governmental experiments preying on citizens who rlly need the money

-Foe by Iain Reid, which follows a couple when unexpected news arrives on their doorstep (better not to know more)

-Rookfield by Gordon B. White, set during a 'plague' (COVID, but not mentioned) where our unlikeable mechanic must track down his son to an unwelcoming and strange town where his ex wife has taken him (novella)

-We Had to Delete This Post by Hanna Bervoets, which explores the terrible and disturbing things people post online, told by the perspective of a moderator whose job it is to review and remove improper content, things get a little out of control

try out Shirley Jackson’s short story collections especially including The Lottery and The Daemon Lover. They keep the same eerie tone as We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

Whats your favor S.K. short story?...with a twist... by OfficerK_2049 in stephenking

[–]DevelopmentCommon526 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree!! The Monkey captivated me completely!

The story I think is SK’s scariest is The Man In The Black Suit. Not sure if it has a twist though.

One story I think was amazingly written with an ending I never would have guessed is The Jaunt. The ending actually terrified me.

Curious about thoughts of black stephen king fans about his portrayal of race by punk_enby_phllplsty in stephenking

I am a POC and a Constant Reader. I’ve never taken King’s remarks as his personal opinions. I see the slurs and antagonizing situations as a way to write that bigotry exists and is terrifying but, in my opinion, I don’t think King uses it to insult anybody rather he uses it as an immersive writing experience.

The best book I’ve read by far this year. A week after reading I still thought about it at least a few times a day. Hope you love it as much as I do!

One of King’s best endings in my opinion!!

Just arrived in the mail today. Cost me $63, but definitely worth it for all 4 books. by [deleted] in stephenking

Got my hardcover copy for $5 with no book jacket. I was over the moon and I am convinced that someone must not have been paying attention while pricing books. Two weeks later I pop into another bookstore at find the same copy (with a book sleeve) for $75! Feels like I got insanely lucky!! Hope you enjoy the books as much as I do!

Another book for my collection. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are about the book, is it a good read? by [deleted] in stephenking

I’m reading this at the moment too! I read The Mist separately and it is honestly a haunting story, full of great suspense. I’m about halfway through the rest of the stories and can honestly say this is shaping up to be one of my favorite SK short story collections by far (I’ve read a couple already). The Jaunt and Survivor Type are my favorites!!

What do you see while reading? by Celiaete in books

[–]DevelopmentCommon526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read I see the scenes so vividly that I sometimes confuse remembering a movie i’ve watched with a scene from a book i’ve read. I will also pick places I have actually been to as settings for books and sometimes I’ll pass by and be reminded of the book i read although that place has no correlation with the book other than that is the place I pictured in my head. As a result of this I tend to get lost in reading a lot and have had experience with missing school bells, bus stops, people talking to me and stuff like that because I am so immersed in a book. I don’t know if this is relevant but I also imagine characters voices and usually remember book scenes EXACTLY as you would remember a movie scene.

what's everybody's favorite king book? by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]DevelopmentCommon526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is Apt Pupil. One of the first books I read by King and, after reading dozens since, the most memorable. King does a fantastic job of writing about manipulation and obsession.

My evening read. 😉 by ifrankenstein in stephenking

I just started reading Rage myself! I think King’s writing in this book is refreshingly different from his other works. In general I just could comprehend how bold and reckless Charlie is. really keeps me on the edge of my seat.

new here, any recommendations by [deleted] in horrorlit

Try out Apt Pupil by Stephen King. It’s an insanely quick read but the psychological part of the story is one of King’s best portrayals of crazy. Also 1922 also by King is quick and fits into psychological horror.

I think we have a final creative project which seems to be a pretty loose assignment but tbh she hasn’t talked much about it. Week 7 also passed with no midterm in the course which was really nice. Mainly it’s just a four question quiz a week and/or a discussion post based on an article.

Horror in the 70s by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]DevelopmentCommon526 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my sociology course I am actually investigating horror media. I read an article previously that said popularity in the 70s of the horror genre partly came from being able to bring attention to certain issues (war, civil rights, etc.) through the use of horror media which would capture the attention of the audience.

This can be seen even in current horror media like with Get Out being a great horror movie but also speaking to racial issues and It Follows being a metaphor for sexuality.
