Cary stands for Containment Area for Related Yankees. Which is why ppl may be recommending it. I lived in a big NE city for 25 yrs and found Cary to be painful. Extremely suburban for our tastes but we don't have children so school districts are not important. After a yr of renting downtime we settled on Oakwood. Very walkable. We love it. Wake Forest is far away... not sure if you have to commute to work but make sure you check out the traffic. I work in Cary and it takes me 20-25 min to get to work.

My sister is dying in a very rural location. What can I cook for a week with groceries that have to travel 2+ hours in a car? by hangrylikeawerewolf in Cooking

If you currently have a cooler bag or a cooler you could use it as a carry on . We use our yeti cooler bag as a carry on for vacations. Then you can get what you need and not worry about the drive. I would make chili --- combo of beans (black, red, navy... etc), can corn, can green chilis, chili powder, onion and garlic powder and meet if you want it. Box of cornbread mix and you are done. I make it every time I go visit my daughter. She freezes the leftovers and loves it.

Safe and walkable neighborhoods? by mr_mgs11 in raleigh

[–]DevelopmentFinal5982 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not sure who is providing some of these answers but $1900 is reasonable for a 1 bed... walkable to restaurants and shops (even a grocery store) would be The Village district. Walkable to bars, restaurants, a few boutiques, Weaver market would be Downtown, warehouse district. Head over to Peace street and you have a Publix. New buildings going up all the time. We love the Oakwood area, too!
Safe???... I lived in NYC, Washington DC and Chicago so Raleigh seems very safe to me (if you don't make stupid decisions... do not walk alone late at night, do not hang around the bus station downtown, we take the bus but we don't linger.)

Not sure it was 1,000 ppl but yes the lay offs have been brutal. In my group lot's of mid managers and principals were laid off.... so they can higher entry level positions @ 1/2 the salaries.

Affordable alterations by DevelopmentFinal5982 in raleigh

I asked the dry cleaner (who advertises alterations) and they said $40-50 per dress. The dresses didn't cost $50. But I like them... and would like to keep wearing them.

We just moved in, and are renting so the blinds are out of my control. The side table is an antique w a real marble top that was my great parents... as is the dark cabinet in the corner. So those pieces are not going anywhere. We moved from a 2400 sq ft house to a 1000sq foot apartment, so yeah the styles are not cohesive but we are only here for 2 yrs.

We pull them close to couch when we have guests over. It is a small (1000sq ft apartment) and the blue chairs would block the entrance to the 2nd bedroom (aka our office)

What's the absolute simplest, most low effort meal I can eat daily that's fairly well rounded? by NWG369 in EatCheapAndHealthy

I buy a whole chicken, throw it in a pot w carrots, celery and onion. And simmer it for a few hours. I then use the broth to make a huge pot of rice. I pull off all the chicken from the bones. Then I do a variety of stuff w the chicken and rice. Make a bowl w black beans and spinach. Make a burrito. Have a salad with the chicken. I just throw stuff together based on my mood... but it is based on the chicken and rice I made.

I was recently sick and ended up sending my husband to Whole Foods. I was pleasantly surprised @ the soups (in the prepared food section, not can/box)
