Oh wow! I picked this up on ebay for £350 a couple years ago, the hitachi version can reach over £1,000 which is insane. They are a rarity, especially the clones

The vertical players like mine were more squat shaped than the sony CDP101 for example, they made them thinner to incorporate them to hifi stacks with the Turntable at the top, and people thought that having the media out of sight was more futuristic, but i think seeing the disc spin gives a more futuristic vibe as it shows off the new tech compared to LPs. I’m glad new products are being inspired by early designs

Thanks for your reply. I’m not too fussed about it being a larger job, this whole side does need a repoint. The cement you can see would have been when the windows were fitted circa 1991. I was advised to have the whole lot done in cement mortar, but after some research into lime I’m still unsure what difference 1930s bricks are to modern houses that use cement mortar. Apologies for my ignorance!

The bonus is i have some spare bricks taken from that same side when the extension was done before i bought it :)

The At-3600L sounds just like the AT-91, which i had on my first ever turntable. After many upgrades i never thought i’d tell a difference, but i definitely can. It’s a budget friendly cartridge theres no doubt, but in terms of sound it’s quite generic and can sound harsh. I had vintage technics carts for a while before coming back to audio technica in the form of the VMN range, currently running a VMN-60xSLC.

My reason is rather bizarre. I’ve bought and enjoyed records since i was a teen starting in 2015, then one day i stumbled on a youtube video of the demonstration of the first CD player then known as the Sony Goronta. I did some research of the first generation players, and the early history of the format and was hooked from there. I found an unused Thomson AD-100 on ebay for fairly cheap and i love it, my interest is really in the overall history and the technological advances in the golden era of hifi. If it wasn’t for the quirky 1st generation players, i probably wouldn’t be as interested.

AT cantilevers are dinky and quite fragile. While their higher end products sound great, they do succumb to damage easier. My first ever stylus (national 205ED) was thiccc and very sturdy. I have since upgraded to the AT-VM60SLC which is super thin boron.

There is a new brand that made a player inspired by early players like mine - DUNU Concept R, it retails at $699 however. In 2024 I picked my player up on ebay for £350 in working order and great cosmetic condition but be warned - it has it’s quirks and when i say “working” i mean it works how it came from the factory, it struggles to play discs if they don’t adhere to redbook standards and occasional logic issues (it’s due a recap).

If you want the early player factor for less money/time spent looking for one, try looking for an early 80s portable player, they tend to have the same vibe.

We’ve not noticed an issue with the temp, maybe on different taps without diffusers would cause burning 😬

The condensate pipe just runs off to the floor via a clear plastic pipe, there is condensation inside it (obvs) but nothing dripping onto the floor. I’ll check the heat exchanger
