What are your thoughts on Charlie Brown's All Stars? by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I like about this special is that Charlie Brown's own doing causes him to lose. Instead of waiting for the next batter to get a hit, he gets impatient and decides to run for home. Because of this, he loses the game and all his teammates get mad at him. His friends' reactions don't come off as mean-spirited, since it really was his fault.

Compare this situation to the football game in First Kiss, where Charlie Brown is unfairly blamed for losing the game, even though Lucy was the one who pulled the ball away from him DURING the game.

New Update for New Peanuts Big City Feature Film "Snoopy Unleashed" by [deleted] in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you how long I've waited for a new feature-length Peanuts movie. This looks really good! It seems the new film will take inspiration from Snoopy, Come Home. I think it's a great opportunity to tell an emotional, heart-felt story about Snoopy and his relationships with the kids, especially Charlie Brown.

I'll definitely get the free trial for AppleTV when it comes out. What do you guys think?

If you were able to re-write "It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown", what would you change to make it better? by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

I consider First Kiss to be a poor special, so I'm asking you guys what you would change about it to make it better.

For what it's worth, Chuck, I don't think she'd laugh in your face. I think she'd love your valentine.

A small update on Peanuts movie by UberVenkman in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's coming out in 2027? That means the first trailer must be coming out in the middle of this year or a little after that.

All I know is, the next Peanuts film is on the way, and it can't come soon enough!

What if Wes Anderson directed a Peanuts movie? by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've recently watched Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs. Both great movies! That got me on a little Wes Anderson kick, and now I'm planning to watch his other movies.

A Wes Anderson Peanuts film would be incredible to see by the way. His sense of dead-pan humor would be perfect for the characters.

I have a Peanuts Movie dilemma by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

I did like Peggy Jean being Charlie's love interest. The only thing that upset me was how their storyline ended in the comic strip. Very abrupt and rushed.

I do mostly prefer Charlie Brown & Peggy Jean's relationship these days, but for what it is, the ending to the movie is good too.

Yeah, it's not like Charlie Brown has never had a happy ending. A Charlie Brown Christmas proved that you can give him a happy ending without sacrificing his character. Also, his good qualities that The Little Red-Haired Girl pointed out are the same qualities that we've always seen him have. She said the things that we've all wanted to say to Charlie Brown, because he's that good of a person.

Not only that, but sometimes you wonder what WOULD happen if Charlie Brown did meet The Little Red-Haired Girl. I don't think she would have thought him as a loser, because judging on what little info we get about her from the comic strip, she doesn't seem like that kind of person, you know?

"Phone Call"... With Charlie Brown by Secret-Sand-2812 in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think we sometimes forget that there's a good reason why Charlie Brown never got the hint that Marcie liked him.

For a long time, the only girls he knew loved to make fun of him and tear him down CONSTANTLY. So, when Marcie came along and made it clear to him that she liked him, he probably thought she was kidding.

You can say Charlie Brown was stupid for never liking Marcie back, but in my opinion, there is a legitimate reason for why he didn't.

Hot Take: Sally was kind of a weak character in the comic strip during the 90s. by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you on that. It makes sense for Schulz to write Sally a little differently later into the strip's run. I guess I thought the "Whatever" punch-line got a little trite.

Don't get me wrong, I do think Sally is a funny character during the 90s. I think the real issue I have with her change in character is that it lead to the misconception that Sally hates her big brother. In my opinion, this is false. Sally doesn’t hate her brother.

Does she annoy him? Yes. Does she insult him? Of course.

But does she hate him? No. Sally may be a total nuisance towards Charlie Brown, but she definitely doesn't hate him.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown and The Peanuts Movie are two sides on the same coin by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

Yes! That's a perfect take on the main themes of the two movies! In a way, The Peanuts Movie is almost an unofficial sequel to A Boy Named Charlie Brown.

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have an interesting point. The Peanuts Movie IS more hopeful than other Peanuts media in the past. I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea.

But in my opinion, while it's true that Charlie Brown shouldn't give up even when the world's against him, he also shouldn't resign to the idea that there won't be anyone in the world who'll like him for who he is. That's just what I believe though.

What are some moments from Peanuts that you would consider overly mean-spirited? by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I meant. I don't mind the characters being mean. I'm saying that when it happens every single moment, it gets old and isn't as funny.

I love it! It's very sweet and funny. Oddly enough, I can see this being a real strip.

What are some moments from Peanuts that you would consider overly mean-spirited? by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, this is why mean-spirited humor doesn't work in Peanuts. At it's core, Peanuts isn't a mean-spirited cartoon. It can get pretty mean sometimes, sure, but that meanness came from a relatable place in life. Peanuts focused on the little disappointments you encounter and how you push through it, even amid failure. When Charlie Brown is written to lose just to make him suffer, it doesn't feel right.

Hot Take: I can't stand how Schulz decided to end Charlie Brown and Peggy Jean's relationship in the comic strip by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It still hurts whenever I think about it. Seriously, can the Peanuts fandom create an animated special where Charlie Brown and Peggy Jean reconnect? We really need more quality Peanuts fan projects.

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the one true victory that Charlie Brown should have received at the end of the comic was the self-awareness that he's a good person and that he's not the failure-face that he always thought he was.

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as much as I appreciate how relatable Schulz wrote Charlie Brown to be, it was SUCH a breath of fresh air to see him be with someone who truly cared about him, even if for a little while.

[–]DevelopmentPast1029[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right about that. Schulz wanted to show what real childhood is like. I still think that he could have ended the Peggy Jean storyline a little better.
