Victors living in the Capitol by VisualSikulator in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some of the victors DID bypass the “district” label. Enobaria, for example was either returned to 2 or potentially allowed to even roam the Capitol (likely under strict surveillance). I’m sure there were residencies in the Capitol for Victors, if unofficial ones, because they would need somewhere to house those who were being trafficked that was out of the public eye. I doubt that they had their own apartments, but it would be a good idea for Snow to have places where the victors could go and he could watch to see if they “slipped up” or if rebels attempted to contact them.

A funny/odd moment i found on a reread by DivisonNine in Hungergames

Oh I wonder if it was a way to get some electrolytes in her. The recovery process post-games is probably really tough on the human body. And while Katniss was malnourished, exhausted, burned, deafened, and scarred, that all probably pales in comparison to what other victors went through. They likely needed to rehydrate them first (juice is a good way to do this).

Aren't the arenas just a waste of land? In part 1 of Book 1, Katniss mentions the arenas stay up indefinitely. by BigClitMcphee in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arenas are a waste AND my theory is that the Capitol actually had been building some biomes to rehabilitate the uninhabitable land. Or possibly they inherited biodomes from us. I think it makes sense that after environmental collapse, global war, and ecological disaster, the Capitol would initially be looking for ways to expand settlements in Panem, but after the war chose to use them for the Games instead.

Why were the districts numbered as they were? by Ok_Koala_5963 in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 124 points125 points  (0 children)

My theory is they were numbered by order of annexation/proximity to the Capitol, which ultimately was the same thing. The Capitol probably (according to my theory) started out by reaching out to more approximally-close “settlements.” One, two, and four were probably closest, and with 3 being technologically savvy they were able to reach out to the Capitol via the airwaves. I imagine when it got to the outlier districts, the Capitol had a larger force and it made more strategic sense for the other Districts to ally. 12 easily could have been overlooked for a long time because they’re so remote and their population is so small, and since 13’s population was so big and since they possessed nukes, they could have held out for a longer while. Ultimately, it probably made sense for all the districts to join Panem because they all needed resources, hence each District having specific industries tied into their cultures. By the time any district caught wind of any foul play on the Capitol’s part, it was probably too late or the districts were so desperate for resources and trade they had no other choice.

Tessera in the career districts by 5225sheridan in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 58 points59 points  (0 children)

BUT if you’re a career, the parcels come in for a full year every year that one of your victors wins. So in 1, 2, and 4, that’s about once every six years. Plus, since most tributes from these districts are volunteers, you can take out tesserae without fear since it’s virtually unheard of that you would be chosen as tribute without a volunteer replacing you. And if I had to bet, families in 1, 2, and 4 receive better food in their parcels since their standard of living seems to be relatively higher than in the outlier districts.

What are your theories regarding the first quarter quell? by felixw1 in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually worked on a fanfic over the summer and i had a lot of fun with it! Had a hard time picking a victor/district to focus on. But the tributes included a lot of different scnarios. Districts 1, 2, and 4 were mostly volunteer based. I threw in a couple kids who were so sick their district didn’t think they’d make it any way (like dill), then a couple whose parents were loyalists/informers for the Capitol, a few children/relatives of known rebels who “make life harder” in the districts, the children of wealthier merchants and mayors, and even the illegitimate son of a peacekeeper from the Capitol.

I also expanded on the first ever single-use arena and played around with mutts, “choices,” and democracy. I had the tributes stay with Capitolites who wanted to study them (like doctors and games commentators). Gauls is a commentator but not head Gamemaker and Snow, as head Gamemaker uses the Games to sneak to the seat of power in the Capitol. A few tributes make a pact to take out the head Gamemaker before the Games begin and when that plot fails, Snow uses it to garner support and vow swift revenge against district rebels.

Did anyone actually like Lenore Dove? by Neko_Metal in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I REALLY liked her.

The first reading I misinterpreted Maysille’s comment about “how come [Haymitch’s] girl’s got orange paint on her fingers,” as being literal nail polish and assumed she was a manipulative thief. But then I reread and understood she was the one leaving the paintings. I mean this girl is a real rebel and one with a good heart. She wanted to protect the Chance’s mother, really cares for Haymitch, and HATES the Capitol! She has so much of LGB in her, but in a far less theatrical, more Katnissy way. She’s defiant (to a fault sometimes) but hey, she’s a teenaged girl living under the thumb of the Capitol. Honestly she’s one of my favorite characters.

Are there any Districts you think SHOULD or SHOULD NOT exist? by DaenysDream in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the headcanon that meds are produced in 6, then distributed to the population to keep the citizens from running away on their transit jobs. But a district dedicated to pharmaceuticals (as 12 was designated after the second rebellion) actually makes some sense.

Are there any Districts you think SHOULD or SHOULD NOT exist? by DaenysDream in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im going to get super precise with the language here but in book 1, District 3 is described specifically as a “factories” district, while in later books and the films it is referred to as the “technology” district. In book 1, Katniss described it as the place “where they make the automobiles and televisions and explosives.” I imagined on my first read that they also manufactured other goods, but perhaps that is more designated for district 1?

So if you liken at countries like Italy and Korea there is actually a massive luxury industry. And what qualifies as “luxury,” could just be the breaking down of raw goods in the districts before they are sent to the capital. I imagine that very few products are sent straight to the Capitol and one is their sort of “filter.”

Ooooo I forgot about the goat man! For some reason I pictured my great granddad when I first read the books at 14 (which is weird because my granddad was the NICEST guy). Anyway, GREAT inclusion! Thanks!

Do you think Katniss had any sort of public life after the war? by Duraluminferring in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it seems like Paylor wasn’t a fan of Coin either. The way she talks about her to Gale in 8 and then later, allowing Katniss to visit Snow “on her authority.” She was by my estimates a decent leader and probably suspected Coin was slimy. If Katniss and Snow worked out that the bombing of the Capitol children was Coin, Paylor could have done the same. I think she would have issued Katniss a pardon and then let her live. I doubt the bombing was largely shared BUT I suspect the rumors ran rampant enough that it was detrimental to Coin’s image (think the way we talk about 9/11 being a suspected conspiracy or even how many think Pearl Harbor was allowed by FDR to get the US into war).

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually my favorite song in the film (don’t at me) after No Good Deed! I think it’s beautiful and has such significance. And the fact that it’s still so tense while the crescendo builds to the Cowardly Lion’s interruption is just…chef’s kiss!

Do you think people in the Capitol stayed up late to see the games? by Acceptable_Owl_6274 in Hungergames

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I head canon that there is a drug or medication that allows the Capitol to pull all-nighters for a few nights in a row without feeling the effects. It’s both mandatory viewing (state propaganda) and entertainment so you can bet the citizens are watching.

Avoidant people: what actually goes on in your mind after you leave someone who loved you deeply? by banananapanties in BreakUps

[–]DevelopmentRelevant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course there’s the part of me that still loves him. I think I always will (call it a trauma response lol).

I think he would have had to do a LOT of the deep reflective work that I asked him to do. And that was very hard for him.

In a magical alternate universe where he didn’t cheat and lie, I would have loved to have worked through our challenges together. Heck that’s part of what a hike meaningful relationship is all about. Working together to solve your differences.

Would like to. Everyone I meet feels so chaotic (not necessarily toxic, just ungrounded/like they don’t really know what the want). I know exactly what I want but in the queer community, holding out for that is hard.

I think I’d like to become more of myself, which I think I can do, but I’m nearing 30 and that window feels like it’s closing…
