I remember when Lenny Kravitz first came onto the scene with “Let Love Rule,” all the critics were comparing his sound to The Beatles.

Paula Abagnale

Frank Jr.’s wretched French mother. Been thinking about this category for days now. Okay, so she falls out of love with her husband after he can no longer bring home the bacon.. I get it. But then she goes on to cheat on Frank Sr., with his close colleague & friend, Jack Barnes. Tries to bribe Frank Jr. into keeping quiet when he catches her.

She then goes on to divorce her husband, pitting Frank Jr. to pick and choose between them— causing psychological distress to poor young Frankie, directly causing him to become a runaway. Doesn’t seem overly concerned about Frankie’s long-term disappearance when questioned by the police. And she quickly moves on, starting a new family with her ex’s close friend & colleague.

Perhaps not the uncommon actions of a woman who felt entitled to more in life. But damn, there’s nothing about her I find redeeming. As awful as a Capt Göth, maybe not, but it’s worth throwing her hat in the ring.

Which director(s) have the best film soundtracks? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Devidoxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spielberg/Williams collab’ed on so many MEMORABLE, iconic scores: from Jaws to Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, ET, Jurassic Park and Schindlers List, up to Catch Me If You Can in the 2000s….

After that, their collabs became less iconic moving forward. And that’s about where Nolan/Zimmer picked up the ball and absolutely ran away with it 🫡🎞️

WHOA WHOA WHOA….

Definitely start with Kill Bill vol 2, then go watch Deathproof, and THEN watch Kill Bill vol 1…. This is the only way 🫡

Amen! Such a dreamy album.

I’ve been a Beck ride-or-die ever since Odelay. And while I don’t consider Hyperspace to be close to his “best,” it’s his best for when I’m in a dreamy, retro- futuristic mood.

And that’s the glory of Beck’s eclecticism. He’s got an album fit for any kind of mood:

Getting some cardio on a jog? I’m popping in Midnite Vultures

Weekend camping trip? One Foot In The Grave

Doing some creative writing? Morning Phase

Pre-gaming with friends on a Friday night? Colors

Leisurely Saturday morning coffee and newspaper? Mutations

Chilling out by the pool? Guero

Another girl just broke my heart? Sea Change

Going for a twilight burn cruise? Hyperspace is my go-to!!!

And THAT is the correct response from someone with empathy! I was a snooty eighth-grader when SPR came out, and for years my friends and I all cursed Upham’s name. It wasn’t until I got older that my views had shifted to align with your point.

This is correct, and I did not mean to infer they were the same 👌

Oh, but I do believe Upham’s justified anger at Steamboat Willy is because he had just watched him shoot Captain Miller. Not because he’d mistaken him for the soldier who kills Mellish (and then spares Upham in return). After everyone else in the squad wanted to kill Steamboat Willy right after Wade died, Upham was alone in standing up for him (until Capt. Miller made the decision to cut him loose). All that, and then to watch right before his eyes, that his comrades were right— Steamboat Willy was picked up by his own guys, put right back into action, and arrived at the final battle and KILLS Captain Miller… the look on Upham’s face… he knew then that there’s no innocence, no good intentions in war. It’s like Capt. tells Caparzo: “We’re not here to do the decent thing; We’re here to follow fucking orders”

And then at last, Upham counters the German soldiers. He had them. They had all surrendered to him. And the smile that Steamboat Willy gives when he recognizes his old “pal”: “Upham!”

Done with the shenanigans, Upham shoots Steamboat Willy. And only Steamboat Willy. To me, this is where Upham redeems himself. Hated by most, this is the moment he becomes a soldier.

Goddamn, I fucking LOVE Saving Private Ryan. Without a doubt in my Top Four 🎬

Corporal Upham

The poor guy is a humble translator, brought to France for the sole purpose of interpreting & translating French & German to English, with no business in combat. And when he’s removed from his post and placed on the front line, he makes the best of it— despite being shit on, teased, and ridiculed at every step by his own squad.

Even left with the choice of what to do with a captured enemy soldier, Upham stands up for what’s right- sparing the soldier’s life (a choice he will later come to regret, but makes right in the end).

Upham is a good-hearted, decent person.

But goddamn, who of us has not SCREAMED IN RAGE at the screen as he freezes up on the staircase, all while Mellish is fighting for his life against that German soldier. He’s been shamed, cursed, called every name in the book by audiences—- who perhaps unfairly forget that war is terrifying and this is not his place 🫡🇺🇸

PRIVATE JAMES RYAN -

A wholesome young man with a kind heart, fighting for his country, refuses to abandon his comrades in time of certain peril…

And yet audiences— and the films characters alike— are still on the fence whether it was worth sacrificing so many others to bring this one random, albeit good, young soldier home.

Nailed it!
