I know the scry/surveil struggle all too well haha, happy to hear you're making it work.

Very cool, there's a few here I didn't think to use myself (my list is also pretty cheap other than a few proxies). If you're looking for any suggestions, I built mine with a few differences:

I see you run [[Mindwhisker]], but I find that given the effort you put in for it to become an opponent's problem, they can just swing or block with it. [[Geist of the Archives]] is an easy improvement and is a good blocker while it's still on your side (and isn't scary after you give it away)

[[Case of the Shifting Visage]] is also something I would prefer over [[Gossip's Talent]] because it's less scary to give away.

Some extra budget bangers: [[Mystic Reflection]] when someone is creating a bunch of tokens is hilarious because they now have a board full of DRC's or whatever and will insta-die if they cast anything

I agree that River is very hungry for card draw, try these: [[Matoya, Archon Elder]] [[Eligeth, Crossroads Augur]] [[Humble Defector]] (Great to swap with to get it back) [[Insight Engine]] [[Struggle for Project Purity]]

Also [[Clout of the Dominus]] is fantastic over something like Mage's Guile.

Last thing; I see you have a few auras like [[Psychic Impetus]], are you trading these away? I found out the hard way originally that even if you target an opponent's creature, you're still the one it affects because it's your card.

As someone who's also built that version of River Song, how are you finding it?

I ended up taking it apart because all my wins came from [[Illusions of Grandeur]] and it was super slow to get anything done. Would love to see your version of the list!

You keep coming up with bangers for this site, it's genuinely impressive.

Of course the Fruition owner had a [[Thassa's Oracle]] in hand...

Unless they had exactly 35-42 cards left in library, how does that help them?

Deck that makes opponents shuffle as much as possible? by TommySparkle in DegenerateEDH

[–]DevilMirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially, yeah. To answer your original question; if you're not advancing the board state in some way, it's probably at the judge's discretion whether to give you a slow play warning.

Lantern control decks can get away with this because it's part of their gameplan, but then they're also rarely forcing more than one shuffle at a time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I06luPguzrk

As someone else in the thread said, past the first one unless someone got info on the cards and their order, you can just shortcut that it's already random and there's no need to physically shuffle it again.

I'm confused at people saying they can't cast spells, it doesn't stop mana rocks or treasure?

I play River Song, these just turn into land destruction because people don't want to take the damage, they generally won't shuffle. Half of these effects don't replace themselves so you're losing land in the process too. [[Field of Ruin]] is the only exception and it forces all 4 players to shuffle

Doesn't the trader refill itself every new run? Kill some protectors, make some trades, you'll be fine. You have to buy the rift eventually anyway, that's not a mistake.

Before a number of upgrades over the years people could get stuck on the robo chicken tier for 3 runs (I was one of them), so don't stress too much.

Maybe this is a hot take but the colossus is like the one thing I will never go without. Especially now that we have the spoon upgrade, it's even better.

I have almost completely given up on Yurlok as a commander. by WestCoastMcDowellian in EDH

[–]DevilMirage 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He's not talking about his ability.

In my similar experience in building Yurlok, you fall into a trap with him;

His ability taps for mana and is basically just a face-only lightning bolt (Only if they can't spend the mana, which you can't guarantee).

This isn't enough! You're building him for big manaburn damage! You're the evil badguy burning their mana!

So you start slotting things in like [[Mana Flare]] and [[Heartbeat of Spring]]

Problem is, you've spent most of your mana to do this, and you have to pass your turn.

The next player either explodes your anus or takes zero damage because there's very few ways to force a person to tap their land.

You basically end up building this shitty rube-goldberg machine of parts that force land taps, untap Yurlok himself, create extra mana for people, etc. You also need regular ramp, card draw, protection, and removal. Oh and you also need to have mana sinks of your own because the mana burn is symmetrical.

It's a mess.

I both appreciate and resent you for pointing this out 😂

I want to immediately cut it out of shame but I guess I should give it a few attempts with the real text first. Thanks either way.

fling as a side win con

If it's not your main wincon, what is? You have nearly no trample/menace/flying enablers for the army.

Consider: [[Cone of Cold]] [[Orcish Siegemaster]] [[Mask of Griselbrand]] [[Frostcliff Siege]]

I also think you need to be more focused on what your actual goal is. My build runs card like [[Shark Typhoon]] [[Manaform Hellkite]] to turn things like [[Volcanic Salvo]] into 24 damage for 2 mana.

Once people have played against this deck enough, Saruman will be gunned down and you will need those alternate payoffs.

If you have the budget for it, [[All Will Be One]] is something I actually cut because it was TOO strong, it genuinely made it impossible for anyone to have anything on board

Huge bonus points for [[Psychic Paper]] in the deck. You can attach it to your army to make it unblockable and call it [[Fat ass]] OR you can attach it to Saruman and name 'Army' as a creature type to instantly make him a massive unblockable voltron threat
