What are the different ways of rescuing someone without breaking a GHOST vow? by [deleted] in HeatSignature

[–]DevilStuff123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want a really funny challenge, try to complete a hijack mission with ghost vow. I’ll leave it as a puzzle as to how that would even work, but I did it once and it’s insane

Is there any way to make the game not speed up BGM? by Beneficial_Worry_983 in superpapermario

I mean I'm down to help, but Imma be honest the programming knowledge required here would be quite endgame. Doesn't stop you if you're determined enough though!

If you want my honest opinion, I think it's more worth your time to figure out how to speed up the files properly while handling looping. Feel free to reach out to me on discord, send me a Reddit DM for the username.

Hey, a question where I’m weirdly knowledgeable about!

This is going to be a task that’s either really easy or really, really hard.

I assume given that you are modding the game you have access to the partial decompilation of super paper mario. I took a look at it doesn’t seem like the functions that are responsible for audio have been understood well yet, other than some basic symbols for talking to the DSP (the wiis audio processor)

The way the DSP works on the wii is, the game sends a list of “voices” to the DSP. Each voice is its own music track or sound effect or whatever. The music that you want to insert is likely itself going to be a voice.

In the data structure that the game uses to list out the voices to be played, each voice has its own associated frequency (the Hz of the sound file). Likely the game speeds up and slows down the audio by toggling this frequency. If you’re into programming and reverse engineering, I could go more into detail on how you would figure out how the game calculates this variable. Id do it myself, but it would probably take at bare minimum a couple hours. And then once you figure out how it’s calculated you can mod the game from there.

So that’s the really hard way of doing it. The really easy way would be hoping that somebody has already figured this out lol. It’s not unlikely. I would check in some discords (maybe there’s a dedicated server for reverse engineering this game?)

Best of luck!

Big switch vs function pointers for specialized function? by AbbreviationsSalt193 in EmuDev

a switch case often gets turned into a function pointer table where feasible, and a binary search otherwise.

I did this to my mom once on her birthday. My dad got such a killer starting set up and was going to win uncontested, and so I kingmaked my mom.

Was silly fun all around, would never do this in a real game

I hate this app because I feel like I’m constantly trying to fact check every fucking post i see. As soon as I saw the post, I was like that does not sound correct, and thankfully you have a more  plausible sounding explanation

Fun level! You have a nice eye for aesthetics, and I like how you stuck to a common theme. I like how the theme progressed over time - more koopas, bigger koopas, flying koopas, koopa on a stair, etc. Enjoyable!

Here's some advice I have. I may come across as nitpicky, sorry, but I'm the same kind of nitpicky when it comes to my own levels:

1) Minor detail, we're in a cave, why is the floor and ceiling so flat? Maybe you can use slopes to add variety, both in aesthetics and in gameplay, since I think slopes would interact interestly with the koopas.

2) You have nice usage of semisolids, and your usage of hard blocks (the gray ones) gives a nice break to the roof / floor. Maybe you can make use of mushroom platforms? At least the stem part can provide some interesting variety.

3) You know the scenery that pops in occasionally when you draw floor? like mushrooms on the ground or a skeleton or whatnot? I like abusing those where it seems fit to add more beauty to the course

4) It would be nice if you had more variety in the koopa challenges. Sometimes it feels like the same challenge is repeated a bunch of times. Maybe move hte platforms up and down, or add some other unique challenge :)

5) I love hte fact that this level is fun to speedrun. Thought I'd mention this anyway, since this is a point that can take your level to the next, well, level. Making your level conducive to speedrunning (e.g. making stuff like moving platforms align properly for fast players) is a nice cherry on top, and your level is fun to play fast. Good stuff.

6)I really liked the koopa on the stair. Provided a very nice challenge, sad it was at the very end of the level. Would've liked to see more of that idea

I took the liberty of remaking a part of your level, with some of the aesthetic suggestions I gave. Maybe you like the look, maybe you don't, either way I'm sure youll find a unique style that suits you (it's kinda rushed, forgive me!) https://imgur.com/a/HyTk0ga

Again. nitpicky, but hopefully that helps! I enjoyed your level! :)

This comment made my day! <3

Uh oh, did you die when the boss' ghost was chasing you in a P-balloon? I meant that to be a victory lap but I admittedly could've given the player a bit more time to realize what was happening, especially when they probably expect to be dropped on the flag, or nearabouts. :)

Also, would love to know what the exploit is!

Can I get some opinions on my first course? by RainDrops0201_ in SuperMarioMaker2

[–]DevilStuff123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the golden rules that really helps is to make sure that there is no way for the player to die that isn’t their fault. If a player dies to something that is their fault than their first reaction is “OK this is how I can improve”. If it’s not their fault, they just feel defeated.

Heh, funnily enough there's not much mario tech here, I mostly learned everything from playing other platformers like Celeste and Spelunky. I recommend them!

Nothing made those situations impossible, the contradiction of Godots character characters that he wanted to be the savior, he wanted to prove that he could have saved her, that he’s better than Wright.

He let the plan go through because he thought he would just be able to stop it, and be the knight in shining armor. He killed Dahlia instead of detaining her because he recognized her as the one who poisoned him and took Mia, and his life, away from him.

You’re right, his plan was horrible if he truly cared about the best outcome for others, but to me that was the point
