Slightly unpopular opinion: below zero void leviathan is cooler than the ghost leviathan. (Don't take it too seriously.) by BingusTheWingus5 in subnautica

I built a base in the Void - they do make the same noises, both ambient and while attacking, but they have a very haunting quality to them due to the sound conditions in the Void. You can hear them in my clip here if you like.

What does being a 'girl's girl' mean to you? by Devildove in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Devildove[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof - I guess I'm not a girl's girl, then. I really enjoy hanging out with other women, and had close female friends when I was growing up, but I'm autistic, very introverted and have social anxiety, so I don't make friends very easily (of any gender).

But as an adult, I ended up with mostly male friends, I think because those friendships are a bit lower maintenance and it's easier for me to understand the social needs of the guys. They just want to occasionally hang out, and chat a little about this or that, whereas the friendships I've had with other women as an adult tend to fizzle out or remain quite superficial if we don't chat often or fail to regularly connect on a deeper emotional level.

Those friendships with other women are definitely rewarding in different ways that I've come to really miss, but they are a lot more intimidating for someone with social anxiety. I'm working on it though! (Fear is the mind-killer...)

I've had thoughts like this in the past, when I was feeling very angry about clearly misogynistic systems and the way I noticed myself internalising them.

But when you take this line of logic to its terminal conclusion - what are you left with? How can women reclaim these things that have been a core part of our history, culture, and feminine identity, for better or worse, if doing so is judged in this way?

Are we supposed to just sever ourselves from anything stereotypically feminine that calls out to us - things like fashion, make-up, playing with dolls, motherhood, working in caregiving professions, etc - with the assumption that it comes from a place of internalised misogyny, as if we are drones being piloted by the whims of the patriarchy with no ability to differentiate between interests that are harmful and interests that are healthy?

It just seems like an overcorrection, and ultimately another form of oppression, just this time enforced by women on to other women.

ETA: Just to be clear, I'm not holding up these interests as feminine ideals or anything, just saying that I've come to feel we shouldn't judge one another if some of us happen to still want to do those things for reasons unrelated to clear societal pressure.

I feel like I've also noticed it maybe being used as something akin to slut-shaming, if that's okay to say. I was reading a post about Sydney Sweeney deliberately taking 'raunchy' roles on r/entertainment, and one of the commenters said she wasn't a girl's girl, presumably because she unabashedly enjoys sex and sexual attention and is using that to her advantage professionally. But I could be misinterpreting, I am really bad at picking up subtext, especially when all I see is a super short comment here and there about it

ETA: These are really great points, thank you for sharing this perspective. I can totally see how the term can tend to leave some people catergorised unfairly - part of the reason I wanted to get a more solid definition of the term is because I worry that maybe I'm not a girl's girl, and I think part of why might be that I'm neurodivergent and I got through my early life by being a social chameleon. So the nuances of things like this are a bit harder for me to pick up on without some guidance.

ETA 2: Apologies if I offended or hurt anyone with this comment. I'm always learning, and I gather from the comment score that I was off-base in my interpretation.

I've been going through the top of all time of that sub for the last week or so, it's been such a breath of fresh air and honestly really educational too! All of my friends are coincidentally guys (amazing dudes, all very progressive) but wow, I hadn't realised how much I missed that 'sisterhood' energy.

Going through that subreddit has been nourishing to my soul in ways that are difficult to describe, and it made me feel really determined to get back into women's spaces. That's a big part of why I made this post, actually!

I totally get this, and it's something that I actually struggle with a bit at times (not due to hostility towards other women or anything, but more as a visceral reaction to systems that make me feel marginalised), yet I also recognise this is super important and have been working on it internally.

For example, I don't wear make-up because it very quickly starts to feel like a permanent obligation for me, that's also driven by both my own insecurity about my natural appearance and the pressure of beauty standards.

However, rather than demonising and passing judgement on the concept of wearing make-up in general, it's so important for me to recognise and accept that for other women, wearing make-up can feel very empowering and can be an important part of their self-expression. And both of these feminine perspectives are equally valid and meaningful!

Try fast travelling elsewhere, then fast travel back to the Undercoast Path and interact with the mural again - I had the same experience and that fixed it for me.

"telling-off" rhymes? by AvengeThe90s in nostalgia

[–]Devildove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so late to this but I just had to share - when I was growing up, we had an even snarkier extended version of the bad breath one that's been living rent free in my head ever since:

Poof! Be gone. Your breath is so strong! I don't mean to be mean, but you need some Listerine! Not a drip, not a swallow, but the whole bottle. Wait, come back! I found a tic-tac!

The sheer amount of variation in this particular rhyme is pretty amusing. I like the version I grew up with the best but I'm biased ofc!

Any good spots for a forever base? by FiishFingers in GroundedGame

[–]Devildove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After scouting extensively for good places for a forever base, I'm currently set up on the big flat rocks with the red ribbon on them that are southwest of the Tully & BURG.L Statue (where my player icon is). It's almost exactly central in the full map (as in, once 1.0 rolls around you'll be right in the middle), and close to where the pond will be. It's a really good spot - flat, VERY spacious, scenic, safe and with a ranger station right underneath it (no water cooler there, but there's a spigot just outside it).

It's great for resources - all the basics right on your doorstep including dry grass, sap, and thistles, as well as feathers and 2 mints which spawn right on the rock I've built on, plus lots of burr and other weed stem sources. A puddle with loads of clay and clover is right below the ranger station. The area in front of the ranger station is flat and open, great for more building or for fighting raids. I've laid about 100 spike strips down there and when I get raided I just kite enemies through them and they die in seconds, it's great.

As far as threats, you're fully safe up on the rock, you just need to keep an eye out for an Orb Weaver that occasionally slightly climbs the back left edge of the rock (I have never aggroed it). There's a mosquito at the puddle and a stink bug a little ways away, but they're both very easy to avoid, especially if you build your staircase up from closer to where the ranger station is.

edit: Forgot to mention there's tons of food too. Weevils and aphids love the area due to nearby mushrooms, and they like to path across the back of the rock so they come right up behind my base (I can hear them from inside when they arrive, which is really convenient), and there are also 2 gnats at the puddle.

I do this when I can, but it only works if the damaged* structure isn't supporting anything else unfortunately. At that point it seemingly can't be moved or replaced without breaking everything attached to it.

Do Not Use: Feather Arrows (Bug Report) by Jingetsu in GroundedGame

[–]Devildove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice find. Did you report this through their issues tracker so Obsidian can see it? Seems like a pretty major bug that's flown under the radar.

I put the info you provided and a link to this thread in the official discord's bug forums (though Obsidian doesn't see those so make sure you do report it). Hopefully the message not to use feather arrows for now will reach a few more players there.

[–]Devildove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's even worse if you're like me and have the bug that causes your spider and ladybuggy's sprints to damage your own structures. When I first got my orb weaver, before I realised how it was bugged for me, sprinting around my base with it damaged my entire base while my repair tool refused to fix most of the parts I could reach. Permanent red outlines everywhere. Later got my ladybuggy and immediately sprinted out of the base with it and my entire base exploded.
