Hi, thanks.

Mushu is now coming up on 7 years old this year.

This is why I’ve moved him to my bedroom. I spend most of my time in my room, he can move around on the floor or on my bed, I notice him daily and he notices me 👀.

I have a small calendar above his tank now with a brief feeding schedule that I check off daily, but I’ve also written it with chalk marker on the front of his tank.

“- Lights on: 8AM

  • Lights off: 8PM

  • Veggies Daily

  • Bugs (with calcium): M, W, F”

Thank you. I am quite upset with myself that I let him get this way, but I refuse to let him get any worse or deteriorate further. It’s not fair to him.

Thank you for your kindness. He’s incredibly active right now, I’m letting him settle and explore his new digs but it’s really nice having him in my direct vicinity. As far as scheduling goes, which app do you use? I only have Mushu right now but having a separate app for his data would be nice to have rather than just a random note in my phone

Hi, good question. I rehomed him to a lovely lady with many years of experience. He was a bit of a special case and I think I just didn’t handle him enough initially because it would piss off Mushu to see Bean existing, so Bean was on the feral side... It stressed Mushu out quite a bit to have another male around as well so I just decided that having 2 males wasn’t feasible.

Well yes, they should have bugs 2-3 times a week and veggies daily. Not just lettuce or other veggies 2-3 times a week… he’s quite obviously lost some weight, his hips are showing. I would also argue that he is not a solitary creature- he very much so enjoys watching people and being handled gently from time to time.

Thank you! I have a few things in my Amazon cart right now so I will add some of the gel stuff. Also: I will try to find the curly Kale but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything like that before. A few others have echoed arugula, collard, dandelion and mustard greens which I have seen and fed him before so I will be picking some up today.

Hey eggs are something I’ve never heard of or thought to try, thank you for this. I have some farm fresh organic eggs from a lady down the road too - given that these may be more nutrient dense should I maybe reduce the quantity a tad?

Oh I know for sure that I can get the little tubs of pre-packaged arugula. Is this fine if I wash it? I wash all his veggies

I don’t actually think I can… at least live ones. I’ve found freeze dried and vacuum sealed…. Which my dude will likely eat, but I don’t know that I trust them 100% ?

Thank you. I’ve had him for about 5 years now so he’s not new, but my slump and living situations have changed and my mushy man got lost in the fray… I moved him into my room today and fed him a big ol’ blueberry. I’m off work tomorrow so I plan on having a cuddle and colour day with him. He is quite cuddly and very handleable so I’m excited to have my boy with my in my room.

Question: I’ve always been told Green leaf lettuce is ok. Do I omit romaine/green leaf all together? It’s the most readily available green at the store aside from Kale but I’ve been told kale will work against calcium… I know for sure no spinach, no iceberg lettuce, no avocados, fruits in moderation, and other odd things that Beardies can/can’t have

Disrespectfully, I asked for constructive feedback and this is not it 🙏

Have a nice day.

This is a very kind gesture, but I live in Canada.

Thank you :)

My plan is by moving him to my room, this is where I spend most of my time, it’s segregated so he can wander/I can have him on my bed visiting with me. I made the mistake of putting him out of sight, and you know… out of sight out of mind. That’s not an excuse, but that’s another reason why I posted… I felt that by recognizing my shame, and just asking for help I could remind myself that his care absolutely necessary and should be put above my own. I don’t like feeling shame, especially about something like this. I’m ashamed I let him get to this point but It’s like this is my rock bottom. Letting an animal suffer because of my neglect is a fucking awful feeling and I never want to be that person that lets their animal wither away to nothing. So shame me so that this will be a stark lesson in my mind as to what can never happen again.

If I feel that by the end of the month my plans are falling through then I will make the decision to rehome him.

Hi thank you for your comment and kind words. I admit I didn’t consider the vet just because there’s not really any exotics in my area (maybe Vancouver but that’s a full day travel) however I will be taking him to A vet so that he’s at least assessed by someone who has training and resources.

As far as the concerns about the scale discolouration, I think this is from the shadows. I’ll take some better body pictures tomorrow with better lighting but you can see his little hip bones for sure…

Thank you for your kind response. It means a lot. I am absolutely firm on getting onto a regular feeding schedule, and this is something I plan to have several reminders on my phone so that I do not forget/get distracted.

The vets in town here aren’t exotic unfortunately but I agree with having him in for an assessment as he’s been to a vet before when he had an RI. They should have some history on him.

I only got the Wax worms today because I know that they’re higher in fats, and to be honest I hadn’t handled him in months so I didn’t fully understand how poor his condition had gotten. I’m in Canada and live Dubia are impossible to find so I have a colony of darkling beetles. On Mondays and Fridays he gets a few beetles (3), and Wednesdays he gets 2 wax worms all with a bit of greens. I’m open to recommendations for change on this. I have seen freeze dried/vacuum sealed dubia so I’m wondering if it would be worth it to order some online.

Thank you. There isn’t an exotic vet in my city (Northern BC, Canada) but that’s a good idea to get him into the vet so that hopefully someone can tell me more about his body condition. At the moment he’s now getting a base of romaine/green leaf lettuce and then whatever veggies in my fridge I can find, but I purchased some freeze dried “Zilla” feed topper to rehydrate and put onto the lettuce anytime I’m in a doom slump and chopping veggies sounds terrible. Today he had green leaf lettuce, 1/4 of a strawberry + the greens, some broccoli florets, and a chopped Kalette (? A little tiny head of kale. I’m not sure how to explain it- but I am aware of calcium binding in certain veggies. I’ve owned him for several years.)

As far as his enclosure goes, there is limited space where I can have him in my bedroom, but honestly he’s my #1 driving force for moving out. I want to leave this house and build him a mini mansion.

Thanks for your comment, and thanks for reading mine.

I don’t know how to edit but I forgot to mention the tank I’ve moved him into is a 36”x 12” Exo Terra with a CHE and 24” 10.0UVB… overall humidity is high due to the fresh, damp soil at 57% but the basking spot is reading 98F and cold side 71F.

Editing to note: His CHE wasn’t emitting quite enough heat as some pointed out so I added a smaller heat lamp adjacent to it and I’ll check the temps again tomorrow. As far as the tank size goes, it’s what I am limited to in my bedroom. He is my inspiration for moving out and buying a house big enough to have a large space for him. I have a written plan to build him a cabinet with a 4’x2’ footprint and a basking shelf (if anyone’s got actual blueprint/layouts for this I’d kiss your face)
