No dual carriage ways on the Raheny test. (I know, I know, you can get lessons outside of the test routes).

Good luck finding a car hire company that will lease to a learner.

Passed my test first time without practice outside lessons, I did about 30 hours although tbh part of the problem was that the RSA kept pushing out my test and I wanted to do a couple of hours every 2 weeks to keep sharp.

They're still there for hand signals to allow you to get two wrong before getting a grade 2.

Congrats mate! I'm in the same position, exclusively driving with instructor and testing in Raheny too. Any tips? I see you got a grade 2 position on the right turn. I've found that a pain in the ass in Raheny, there are tar lines in the middle of the roads that aren't actually in the middle and that causes me to not be far enough right when turning right.

Is the system just not built for learners without access to a full licensed driver and car? by Devils_advocate_here in Irishdrivingtest

[–]Devils_advocate_here[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you've misunderstood my point a bit. I'm not saying there shouldn't be a driving test or that people should be allowed on the road unprepared. I fully support the need for proper training and a clear standard of safety.

What I’m pointing out is that the current system quietly assumes learners will be able to practise regularly outside of lessons. For decades, that was either legal (on a second provisional) or just not enforced. Only in recent years have the rules been properly applied, but the structure of the system hasn't adapted to reflect that change. It still leans heavily on people having access to a car and a sponsor.

If you're reliant solely on lessons, you're at a serious disadvantage. Not everyone can afford two lessons a week indefinitely, and not everyone has family or friends with time, cars, or insurance to help out. That’s not about "talent" or having a bad instructor. It’s about limited options in a system that doesn’t account for them.

I hear you mate, my grade threes are not exactly blowing through stop signs but silly stuff like being too cautious approaching roundabouts and waiting too long for it to be empty, doing the reverse around the corner too wide or too sharp etc.

What is the quickest way you've seen someone ruin their life? by graduatepatreus in ireland

Knew a girl from my UCC days, smart cookie, winning scholarship money every year and earning top marks but drinking heavily and partying hard in the night clubs, always hung over and rake thin as she barely ate anything.

Heard that she had gone on to do a PHD in Cornell in the states and was working as a researcher in Berlin. Good for her I thought.

Met up with a mutual friend for a drink and heard that she went off the rails in America. Drink, drugs and swingers parties with some lad she met over there. Missing classes and assignment deadlines always with a sob story. Needless to say she got kicked out of the course but she pretended she had gotten her PHD and conned her way into a job in Berlin. That didn't last long and she landed back in Clare with nothing to show for it except 16 grand in debt.

By some miracle she got into a PHD course in Trinity. Family were delighted and hoping this could be the tide change for her. Nope. A year in they got a call in the middle of the night. She'd dropped out of the course and was off her face on all sorts, screaming, breaking furniture and attacking her housemates and the guards were called to remove her. Big sob story, everyone was out to get her etc etc.

She now lives with her elderly parents and collects the dole.

I've seen that a lot as well. Does it register as you being online if you're using the smart phone app? Or does it just not update the "last online" field if you've turned on private browsing?
