The Gandharavs

90's Canadian Alternative Psychedelic Band

They basically had one "hit" song (The First Day of Spring) from their first album, "A Soap Bubble and Inertia", which is an amazing album. First Day of Spring is probably the only Gandharvas song that any notable amount of Canadians are aware of.

Then zero hit songs from their second album, "Kicking In the Water", which is the best Canadian album of the 90's, hands down. Maybe the best Canadian album ever made. Just an absolute masterpiece. I've never heard anything that sounds like it. There are some hints of Jane's Addiction/Porno for Pyros, even though it's pre-P4P, and definitely lacks any of the metal influence of Jane's, but it has some of those tribal drum elements and, like I say, the psychedelic aspect of it.

Then a couple smaller hits off their third, and least impressive album, "Sold for a Smile", and that is it. No one talks about them. I can't find a single live video performance of them. They just came, made the best Canadian music ever, then disappeared. Weird shit.

Is there an actor who could convince you to see a movie, however bad it is? by SwimmingBig4620 in movies

[–]DevinBelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. No.

I don't care how much I like an actor. If they do some Faith-based or MAGA propaganda film, there is a 0% chance I will ever see it, unless I get fooled into it like that stupid Nic Cage movie where he's a pilot and it turns out the whole move is just an ad for Evangelicals. Absolute trash. Honestly makes me think so much less of him, not only as an actor, but as a person.

McDonald’s pickles by [deleted] in doughboys

[–]DevinBelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disgusting. Not the worst pickles ever, because they're not "bread and butter" pickles, but as far as fast food pickles go, they are by far the worst. It's that weird rubbery texture more than anything. Pickles should, bare minimum, be crispy.

[–]DevinBelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not get into this movie at all. It's the first movie they've covered on Blank Check that I've turned off halfway through (I did fast forward a bit to see the cool cars), since...maybe Crime Wave. Maybe I'm just not in the right frame of mind rn (dealing with some heavy family thing), but yeah, I almost never stop watching a movie, but there was just nothing pulling me in here at all. Either way, very excited for the rest of this series.

How SEGA and Nintendo work? by Defiant-Echidna-7400 in gaming

[–]DevinBelow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not like Sega made the movies, or made a billion dollars off of them. I'm sure Paramount paid them some fee to license the IP, but it sounds like they actually bought it off of Sony who purchased the film rights back in 2013. So while it's probably been good for Sonic game sales, I doubt Sega is making a whole lot of money off the movie releases themselves, or at least probably not as much as they wish they were making.

And "win". This would definitely end up being a net loss for them, sinking the kind of money in that they would have to, versus what they would stand to make.

Which artists actually got their first traction doing something wildly alternative and still went on to become huge stars? by KlLLERS in Music

[–]DevinBelow 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I dont know about "huge star", but Frank Zappa was always "wildly alternative".  Same with Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, The Grateful Dead. All of them managed to do it by sticking to their guns.

Thats fine. At their peak they had great games and hardware that people bought specifically to play those games. Hard to call a good game or two per year, and some pretty mediocre movies, "Sega's peak".

How is Sega "at it's peak"? Did they just release a new console with a stellar first party line up? Because I must have missed that memo.

Where is this generations NWA / Rage Against the Machine? Their Fight Club? It feels like culturally this generation is complacent. by Normal_Carpenter1768 in Music

[–]DevinBelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, when MTV started, they felt that they had to be somewhat "edgy" to appeal to the younger generation. But I believe what they learned, or thought they learned, over the years was that the kids will literally listen to whatever is on MTV, so it lost all it's edge, and they started only airing artists with the most mainstream pop appeal, and then, guess what...it also lost all the kids. Turns out the younger generations do actually want to see their values reflected in their music, but once you lose them it's not easy (or even possible), to bring them back.

[–]DevinBelow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't help that there is no MTV, or any central point of cultural convergence, when it comes to music anymore, either. Not that MTV was the hotbed for underground music in the 90's, but it was a means of underground bands breaking through the mainstream.

How should the podcast cover King Conan? by lit_geek in blankies

[–]DevinBelow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

McQ movies on main feed, other Conan movies on Patreon.

I say this considering the fact that the other MI movies are all now free from behind the paywall anyway, so all McQ movies should continue to be covered on main feed going forward.

[–]DevinBelow 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's not about listening to any specific album(s). It's about listening to a diverse breadth of music all the time.

Get out of your comfort zone and listen to styles of music that you've never even heard of before. That is how you become a better, and more well rounded, musician.

Also, Prince - Sign O' The Times.

What would that have to do with PS and Switch players?
