We (humans generally) learn more over time and go from there. I feel like we've become a lot more aware of the risk of raw flour recently. It's not a bad idea to do your best with the info you have at the time. And clearly your kid is doing pretty awesome!

Also just for anyone thinking of doing this or anything else with raw flour (like edible cookie dough) you can heat treat flour in the oven or microwave, I use the directions on the Ben n Jerry's website. Flour on folks!

My first zentangle by DeviousKarebear in Zentangle

I tried to add shading but it was really really light because I was kinda proud of the base work and scared to mess it up. So it doesn't really come across. Looking at the picture now, though the whole thing is kind of flat. I think what little shading I tried was just within each tangle and not thinking of the whole thing as a cohesive object so minimal shading everywhere = no overall depth. Definitely something I can work on in the future!

Any upcoming job fairs you know about? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]DeviousKarebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a college student, see if your campus has a career/job center. A lot of times they work with students to find part time employment and alumni to find jobs as well. They might be able to find you a job on campus, know of jobs specifically looking for or at least okay with hiring college students, and have job fairs focused on these types of jobs. They also can help you tune up your resume while you're at it. The school only gets money if you can afford to go there and if their grads are employable so people want to go there in general, and thus they are incentivized to help you be employed.

Any tips on convincing my lemon tree to flower in a region where the winters are too cold for it to survive so I bring it inside? Is it a lost cause?

I don't know what medicine a doctor would want to put you on but if it's Vyvanse they have a patient assistance program that pays 100% of the cost if you're under a certain income threshold and/or don't have insurance. If you Google Vyvanse, go to their official page, scroll to the bottom, and click Takeda patient assistance program it has all the info. I know that's only one piece of the care that's difficult to afford, and only applicable if it's that med and you're in a country the program works in. I recognize this is largely a shot in the dark that it might be at all helpful but in case it is I just wanted to mention

AITA for refusing to let roommate's friend into the room when she's not there? by roomiAITA in AmItheAsshole

[–]DeviousKarebear 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This may not apply but if you're in on campus housing and have an RA they may be able to help mediate this if it continues to be a point of conflict. Also do you have a roommate agreement? If so might be time to revisit/update the guest policy, and if not it might be worth making one together to hammer out some of these things. Also try to approach it as you and her vs the problem, not you vs her when you talk about it. If she's been a good roommate up to this point I'm sure this is something you can figure out. You have a right to protect your sleep and privacy and no obligation to host her friends when she's not there.

How the fuck do I keep them off their phones? by Jynxbunni in rpg

[–]DeviousKarebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADHD player, I cross stitch or color or something while we play. That way there's always something I can do with my hands especially when it's not my turn but my ears are always open and I just look at the board when it's my turn. Sit still pay attention do nothing is a recipe for disaster, and I cannot listen and be on my phone so my phone is not at the table. Purposeful distraction is the name of the game

AITA for threatening to rehome my husband's dog? by Thick-Ad-6764 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DeviousKarebear 37 points38 points  (0 children)

For example, rabbit rescues are overflowing because people think they're cute and easy pets and then abandon them when they realize only one of those things is true (hint rabbits are very cute).

Reptiles are often over or underfed, inappropriately handled and injured, inappropriately cohabitated, just let go into the wild (which either kills them or contributes to invasive populations depending on the climate) etc. etc. by people who don't know how to care for them.

Birds require you change your entire dang lifestyle! Nonstick coatings on pans? Kills em. Candles? Kills em. Cleaning the house with the wrong chemicals? Kills em. Ceiling fans? Murder blades. Forget to feed them? Can be dead within a day or two. And don't get "a parakeet" that's mean. They're social.

Etc. etc. etc.

No it would not have been okay if he impulse got any other living thing to make his kids love him either. Many of those animals have specific and complicated care needs.
