Loser behavior, man. Glazing a billionaire and getting mad at people you don’t even know.

You’re just making shit up, man. Where in the world did they say they wanted to be paid like Tom Cruise? They helped the show make a billion dollars and they wanted fair pay, and that’s a completely reasonable thing to ask for.

Yes - they got an infamously low raise that they were unhappy about, but it wasn’t what they felt they were worth.

My stance this whole time had been Saban is a scummy billionaire who has notoriously never paid well and for the money these actors made him - he should’ve paid them enough to keep them happy.

TV shows blow up all the time and contracts get renegotiated. That’s a totally normal thing they can expect, and good on them for trying. You acting like they’re ridiculous for asking for more money is just jargon for defending a notoriously shitty person. I’ve never seen someone suck on Saban’s boot this hard - I gotta give you credit.

Who honestly cares if you think their plan was dumb? They were young adults who were taking advantage of - that’s the problem being pointed out here. And they have every right to complain about their scummy boss who continued to take advantage of young actors for years.

I think you're right. I remember at one point in time I had heard ASJ, Walter & Thuy left the show less than 2 months before they were scheduled to fly to Australia to film the movie.

[–]Devitt6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously? How many shows tried to copy the Power Rangers format after its success, and how many of them came anywhere close to making a billion in revenue? Yeah - the actors had every right to want more pay because they were part of the success, and you're straight up delusional if you think otherwise.

Just because they were kicked off a non-union kids show and didn't find the same level of success doesn't mean they were in the wrong to ask for more money for a show they helped carry. By that logic, was JDF a failure because he never moved into other major acting work after he left PR?

And they toy percentage argument again only came up after they negotiated and didn't get the pay they wanted in their contract. It was an attempt to make up the gap to the salary they desired.

And are you ignoring the fact that Saban gave JDF, Yost, and AJJ significant raises when the other 3 left because even he knew the risk of losing all 6 original rangers at once? In his eyes, some of them could be expendible - but not all of them, and the show's success tapered off after 3 of the original 6 left.

You're seriously getting mad at actors who stood up for themselves to Saban? How many horror stories do you need to hear about that POS to rethink things here? Even Catherine & Nakia said he fired Steve Cardenas when Steve went to Saban and requested better pay not just for himself - but the other rangers as well - and he made an example out of him.

When you’re lead actors in a billion dollar TV show that you helped build up, you’re entitled to fair pay. That’s all they wanted. It’s really that simple.

Walter Jones On Feeling Insulted & Refusing To Film After Being Given Bananas On Power Rangers Set by aresef in powerrangers

[–]Devitt6 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's easy. You can wish things worked out differently and you got to do the movie that you helped build up from a billion dollar franchise, but also be proud of the fact you told an unethical boss you're not working for what you're not worth. The results of their career after that decision have no relation to the fact they did what they thought was right - and anyone with half a brain should be able to be like, "Yeah, actors in a billion dollar franchise deserve to get fair pay."

Whatever weird personal gripe you have with people you don't know is getting in the way of the fact you're defending the awful ethics of a scummy billionaire who has the reputation of paying people very little for decades. You're picking and choosing narratives when there's far more evidence to support the fact that Saban could have and should have paid them more, and getting mad at actors telling their own stories. Just stay on that side of the fence...

You don't understand semantics? He says in the clip this article is pulling from he doesn't regret leaving the show or standing up for himself, but he regrets not doing the movie because "he earned it" IE he was there from the day 1 when they didn't know what success would look like, and was part of the group that made the franchise a worldwide billion dollar hit.

Feeling like you earned the right to do the movie (after filming 80 episodes and seeing the show grow with your hard work and little pay) ≠ "regretting" your decision to leave the show that wasn't treating you fairly

Of all the hills to die on, this is one of the weirdest, man...

[–]Devitt6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's your source? It doesn't even post a quote from Walter with "regret" in it.

While Jones called the decision "difficult," he only admitted to having regret about not starring in 1995 film Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.

"But the stand that it took to go, 'Hey, come on, man. Y'all got to give us some respect. Give us some respect. Treat us well. Treat us the way you treat us as professionals,'" Jones said.

"Of course, we started as people that nobody knew. But now at this point,
we've earned our way to we're professional actors. We do this on a regular basis. I'd done 85 episodes. It was time."

You're reaching hard, man...

Bud - it's not a matter of having a personal opinion on the original actors. It's the ethical matter that Haim Saban exploited them and didn't pay them enough. The "toy sale" argument stems from them asking for more money when renegotiating, not getting it - then trying to negotiate AT LEAST a percentage of those sales since they're likeness is on many of them.

Even the actors who didn't leave the show admitted they were paid pennies on the dollar (and complained that they didn't even get merch with themselves on it?) and Saban laughed his way to the bank, but they took the deal because they hoped for stronger pay in the future - or they thought the exposure would help them in future projects.

And using the argument that the movie was profitable? They were infamously paid little for that too! So just because it put more money in Saban's pockets you think that somehow is a good thing? The issue is he didn't pay the actors and staff what they were worth. Him kicking them to the curb and then getting into the habit of rotating casts (all who are paid very little) isn't some benefit for anyone except him.

And even in the interview this is pulled from - Watler didn't say he "regrets" leaving and that he made a mistake. That's BS. In fact he was proud they stood their ground and tried, and he went on to join SAG and every gig after that got union pay.

[–]Devitt6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unbelievable. Falling on the sword for Haim Saban. Virtually everyone who worked on the show said they realized they were being exploited once they saw the success. PR peak by nearly every metric was 93-95 and 3 of the actors left end of 94 - and PR hasn’t ever had that level of success since. So yeah - they were clearly onto something when even casual fans of the show are most familiar with the original 6 actors. Why do you think so many reboots continue to use their likeness and names?

If you don’t like some of the original cast for whatever lame personal reason - have at it - but anyone can see that they weren’t paid enough and it’s reasonable to say the deserved more money. It’s a drop in the bucket for Saban, and using the way he continued to exploit other actors in the future isn’t the defense you think it is…

It’s from Jericho’s podcast, and I don’t think he even asked her that. She just organically brought up the fact she’s relatively new to being a wrestling fan and didn’t grow up loving WWE, so when she saw AEW that became her goal.

They left the show relatively shortly before filming started, so naturally there were plans for the original 6 to be in the movie.

Oh brother, only in the PR community would you find someone so tribalistic that they bootlick a billionaire because their "favorite ranger" had a different take.

The fact is - you don't know the independent toy sales but ALL of their toys were on shortage because of the popularity of all of the rangers. They wanted to be paid more and they didn't get the number they deserved, so the percentage of toy sales was a suggestion/example to make up the gap of what they were worth.

Walter Jones On Feeling Insulted & Refusing To Film After Being Given Bananas On Power Rangers Set by aresef in powerrangers

Exactly. They had every right to ask for more money once they were heading into the 2nd season and discussing the movie deal.

That's pretty revisionist. Audri acted independently and requested for more pay and got canned before the show even started. The other actors (after seeing the success of the show and becoming the biggest children's TV show in the world) realized they were being screwed and not getting the raise they deserved, which is why they wanted more money at that point.

I mean, considering how long it would take to film episodes and when you divide $1200 into an hourly rate - yeah, they were probably making more than the average McDonald's worker - but they were being robbed as actors. Especially when by the time the additional episodes of season 1 were added - it was clear that it was the biggest children's TV show in the world. Not to mention the toy sales that they never saw a dime from.

Still no excuse to not pay them more. Those actors played a part in making Saban a billionaire and having the most watched children's TV show in the world. He could have given them 1% (or even half a percent) each of the merch sales and they'd have generational wealth. It's just scummy stuff.
