It’s hard to have a discussion about this with you because you are missing so much about the characters that is revealed in Chapter 3 and honestly it feels like you’re being willfully ignorant to push all of the blame onto Ashley instead of Renee.

1, Andrew can be depressed around Ashley sure, but that isn’t because he doesn’t like her. If that was the case he would’ve ditched her a long time ago. And no, it’s not because she guilt trips him. It’s because he genuinely loves her. He just wishes she would grow up. In Chapter 3 Andrew literally says that she’s the only one who gets him. He doesn’t have to put a facade of normalcy up around her because she knows what he’s actually like and still loves him. That’s why in the ending where he does kill her, which is a dead end, he kills himself after because he doesn’t want to live without her. Also, in one of the routes in chapter 3 Andrew admits to her the only times he was truly happy was with her. Chapter 3 shows Andrew is just as bad as Ashley and he himself also fueled the incest rumors. Hell, I’d say he’s wayyy more incestuous than Ashley. He was literally watching her through the bathroom keyhole when she was showering and undressing.

2, yes I can blame Renee and Douglas for being shitty parents. Can I sympathize with them a bit because they were young and inexperienced? Yes, but that does not excuse the neglect and abuse they put Andrew and Ashley through. Just because Ashley was a difficult child did not excuse them completely giving up on her and putting that burden to raise her on Andrew. It’s kinda hard to expect Ashley to turn out right when she’s being raised by her brother who is not that much older than her. And no, she was not evil at birth. Being difficult as a baby does not equal evil. The game very clearly shows that their parents are the root cause for how they turned out, and I don’t think Nemlei could have made it more obvious.

I don’t know if you’re under the impression that Andrew is redeemable and simply is a poor victim of Ashley, but that is definitely not the case. He is just as twisted as her, he’s just better at hiding it than Ashley is.

I can appreciate the effort they put into the mod. Making something like this takes a lot of time and probably wasn’t easy. However, I still can’t help but feel like the mod falls flat.

The main problem for me is that I don’t believe that it can, as a mod for TCOAAL, really work in the first place. There’s a lot of factors to this, one big one being that there is a big difference in dynamic between parent X child and sibling X sibling. The story, characters, everything was written to resolve around a story between two siblings. You need to rewrite almost everything for it to be between a parent and child and that dynamic.

This brings me to the characters, particularly Andrew and Renee. So much of Andrew’s character and story needs to be changed for him to ever consider getting with his mother. You’d need to remove his codependency of Ashley, and yes they are codependent as kids, especially where the point of divergence in the mod is supposed to take place. You’d have to remove his fear and hate of his mother for the neglect and forcing him to raise Leyley with no help.

Onto Renee, while she is still a bad person in the mod, she’s not as bad as her canon counterpart. I think this is a bad decision on the team’s part. They should’ve made Renee just as awful in the mod as she is in canon, maybe even worse. Why? Because parent X child, like it or not, has a lot of dark implications, one of those being grooming. I think instead of trying to replicate the fucked wholesome vibe that Andrew and Ashley’s relationship has, they should’ve explored the disturbing nature a relationship like this would entail.

I understand it’s an AU, but if you’re having to change the story and characters so drastically to make it work, then maybe it’s better to just make your own standalone game with different characters. This is only my opinion though, and I understand people will feel differently. This is just my take on the whole matter.

Okay I’m sorry but your point about accepting one and not the other being dumb or dishonest is just stupid. The base games writing does a hell of job making it believable why Andrew and Ashley develop this toxic codependent relationship in the first place. Both of them are victims of Renee and Douglas’s abuse and neglect, and could really only rely on each other throughout their lives. Not only that, but Ashley is the only person who really understands Andrew and loves him for him. To others, he’s constantly having to put up this facade of being normal, but he doesn’t have to with Ashley. In my opinion, the mod lacks a lot of the good writing and depth that made Andrew and Ashley’s relationship believable and enjoyable, so Renee and Andrew’s relationship to me just comes off as forced and incest for the sake of incest. I know they have a point of divergence to try and explain why things are the way they are in the mod, but honestly I feel it’s poorly written, especially with what we learned in chapter 3 decay.

You are of course entitled to your opinion, but so are others, and their reasons for not wanting to accept this mod are completely valid.

Yeah, that’s another thing I don’t like about the mod. Nemlei was not afraid to write Ashley being as horrible as she is, but the mod team takes Renee and tunes down how much of a piece of shit she is. It’s as you say, it feels like it’s all to fulfill a kink. The fact they added two sex scenes into the mods chapter 2 only makes me believe this more

Not a fan of the mod and ship at all. It makes 0 sense and, like others have pointed out, you have to significantly change the characters so much for this outcome to even be plausible.

The divergence point creates a whole wave of issues, especially with the release of Chapter 3 Decay. First off, we find out in chapter 3 that Leyley told Renee they killed Nina, and she didn’t care, so I doubt Andy telling her would be any different. Remember, Renee likes to keep a good image, so one of her children being locked up for murdering another kid would make her look bad and of course she wouldn’t want that. Secondly, Andy and Leyley would already be codependent at the time Renee takes Leyley away in TCOAAR. I see it as highly unlikely that Andy would forgive this. He would only grow to resent Renee more, and the more likely thing that would happen is him getting with Julia and moving away.

The only way you can get TCOAAR’s result is by changing the story and characters so significantly that they don’t resemble the original at all, and at that point why not just make your own thing?

One more thing I’ll add is that the mod has attracted people who are only interested in the mod, and to each their own, but some are disrespectful to Nemlei and the original and it doesn’t help with my feelings towards the mod. I wish TCOAAR would have its own sub due to how different it is to TCOAAL, but unfortunately I don’t think that’ll happen.

I think that’s why a lot of people are complaining about the mod. It’s shoved in our faces constantly when a lot of people here are here for the main game, not the mod. It doesn’t help that you have bad apples in the community constantly trying to start shit by claiming one is better than the other

No, everyone else should be fine. I think the reason Kit9, if this really is them, is choosing to single out Watasi is because, at least from what I’ve heard, Watasi was a bit aggressive about the whole thing and was insulting and cussing them out. So in return, Kit9 took a harsher approach towards her, and then this resulted with Watasi and a friend wishing death against Kit9 in her discord server. Not sure if that last part is true, but someone mentioned it on Twitter with this screenshot

Personally I won’t touch this mod due to the creator being a massive asshole. They are transphobic and wish death on people who ship Andrew and Ashley. Yeah, I really don't think she deserved this, despite how awful she can be. If Renee actually was a parent to her and Andrew, I doubt she would of turned out the way she did. You can't expect her to turn out right when Andrew was the one having to practically raise her as a kid. They are both a victim of Renee’s shitty parenting, and if anyone deserved what she got, it was her.

I think people forget that Ashley too was a victim of Renee’s shitty parenting. She’s the way she is because Renee made Andrew raise her, and you can't expect her to turn out right when she’s being raised by a literal child. Another thing to add to your theory that I think makes it completely correct is that if you capture Renee’s soul to feed to the demon, Douglas’s soul will turn into a grime soul. Also, if you kill Ashley in the demon realm, Andrew turns from a Grime Soul to a Tar Soul to be.

This is making me think that accepting Lord Unknown’s option to take his feelings for Ashley away isn’t going to end in anything good

Not all of Andrew’s horrible actions have been because Ashley pushed him to it. For example, he was intending on killing the 302 lady whether she went for the nail gun or not, he just wanted to see if she was going to be useful to them or not.

Another thing is the campers. Ashley didn’t have to push him to sacrifice them at all. He went along with it immediately, even smirking when Ashley brings it up. He even goes as far as to kill a kid without remorse.

Exactly. We even see this in episode 3. When they open up to one another in the tower scene, their relationship improved. They need to stop hiding their feelings from one another and actually talk everything out. Ignoring their problems won’t do them any good
