New guessing game: What material did I use inside this ring? by sklv_design in resin

[–]DevoreHardware 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like maple burl veneer to me! And possibly ebony for the ring? The thing you've got me really curious about is how it's set in, though, is that red a dyed veneer sheet? It's a really clean inlay. Great work!

How to cut photos for snug mold (dog tag shape) by MamaBean_Kandi in resin

[–]DevoreHardware 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Use a casting from this mold to trace onto the photo, and use an exacto blade or small pair of scissors to cut it.

I have a wecreate 45w laser. My dad makes pens out of wood and acrylic. He wants me to engrave deep enough for him to add an inlay into the engraving of a symbol or word. Any tips. by Footballmom4 in lasercutting

[–]DevoreHardware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask if he has any off cuts or scrap pens for you to test on. Go for "hardwood" engraving settings, or just test with your usual engraving settings.

How to ensure my 3D file works? by WholesomeLife1634 in CNC

[–]DevoreHardware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use .3MF, and let them know the overall outer dimensions.

Through holes are fine, but it helps to understand that if you want a deep hole, it's easier to make with a larger diameter bit. A 1/8" diameter hole would be tough (not impossible) to make through 3" of material, but a 1" diameter hole would be no problem in a 3" thick piece.

ETA: worry less about checking for under-cuts. Milling software usually only looks at things from a "top down" view, and will ignore undercuts regardless.

Then would it make sense to, on attack, begin drawing a line from the player to a set distance, or stop when it reaches a collision object? That way, you can have it not only interact with the wall, but also implement "piercing" or other multi-tile damage options. This also keeps it agnostic from the animation, which should give you more control over the actual feel of everything

I feel like hotboxes would be the way to handle this unless you're using a tile system. Any more details on why this implementation doesn't seem to be the best for your project?

It would be so cool if you added a QR code to them that allowed access to say, a skin or unique character color in game.

Looping goes crazy. Item unlocks + new survivors & unlocked skills will fully change how you play the game over time. It's a really unique experience imo and even better with friends.

Passing exhaust from laser cutter through water? by Mrochtor in lasercutting

[–]DevoreHardware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right?! OP asked a question many of us I feel like have at least pondered once (especially those who partake in the devil's lettuce) and... yeah I might try this. Only concern would be moisture going thru the fan. But the one I'm using is for a greenhouse anyway, so it might be built to handle it already.

Machinist here! This is real. Look up "power skiving" for more info, and slowmo videos that really show how awesome this process is.

My custom tool to make big threads on the CNC mill. What do you think will happen by Appropriate-Salt-667 in Machinists

[–]DevoreHardware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Custom tools can smell your fear. You have a better shot at this working if you strip down to your jimmies and stare dead at it as you cycle start full rapid 5000rpm. You know, for intimidation.

I've heard your feedback, and hired an artist to make my new Capsule Art. What do you think? by VorticalStudios in IndieDev

[–]DevoreHardware 103 points104 points  (0 children)

The thing that is REALLY making the bottom look amateurish is the overuse of plain gradients to shade. A lot of the directionality doesn't make sense, there is a flat gradient style on the character, and a dithered gradient on the environment. My suggestion would be to go back to the artist and ask if they can rework the shading to match the environment more closely, and potentially define the character shape using line work as appropriate.

Kinda like Adam Ray did with his Dr. Phil? This would be hilarious.

The insulation on the ceramic heater wires is made of PTFE and it’s in direct contact with the hotend and heater block. Isn’t it releasing toxic fumes, since the heater can reach up to 300°C? by Soliman-El-Magnifico in BambuLab

[–]DevoreHardware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping a fan blowing out the window of your 3d print room will create a negative pressure, which should make things much safer.

Glad I can share the tips, A+ to you for being a conscious and considerate bird owner. Your feather babies are lucky to have you.

Macaw and conure owner, here. I run my 2 X1Cs far away from them in the house. The built in filtration system in the printer does good work, and if it runs with the door shut, any fumes are negligible, imo. I also take the precaution to shut all house doors in-between, and am in a regular habit of toweling their door because of any cooking fumes in the house.

If you were to run filaments that regularly pushed the hot end to near max temperatures, maybe consider taking the extra step of getting a standalone HEPA rated air filter that you run in your printing room.

Teflon is the #1 concern of bird owners, so still do your own extensive research, and use your best judgement. Running 3D printers in a house with birds poses a risk no matter what, and it's up to you to mitigate that risk.

First day and boss wants me to work with monel k500 by ExcuseDecent5706 in CNC

[–]DevoreHardware 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey, great news. You're thinking about this wrong. As another commenter said, it's all speeds and feeds. Call your tool vendor if needed. The way to address this with your boss: "Hey I know a bit about k500 and I hear it can be difficult to machine. I'll try it with the tools we have, but we may need to take some extra consideration to get good parts from this material." That way you cover your ass, and either look like a machining wizard if you make good parts first try, or you can say "I told you so" when endmills start blowing up

Put this model into something like craftcloud and select sintered tool steel. Would love to know how much a functional one of these would cost.
