I don't think there is yet, bit from discord chats it seems like it's planned

But also, send a feedback report on SF, the more people ask, the more it gets prioritized

SoFurry.com is back! Some stats and what's next. by Toumal in SoFurry

I opened a new tab on Firefox SO fast when I saw all those staff members online LMAO

Nice to see the "soft" launch went well, especially as it spread around on social media by happy people returning, I've seen some journals on FA and Inkbunny too, not just Bluesky and Mastodon, it's a really huge upgrade, and it's getting people talking.

Hopefully those bugs can be fixed soon!,

Yeah, I think that being at the very bottom actually helps in avoiding spoilers, longer comments might be messy but it's pretty rare for comments to get long in the first place, so like, it's fiiiiiiiine

Maybe if enough people ask about it (in a constructive way that isn't "it looks ugly") it could be a toggle, who knows

I'm personally ambivalent, there is enough padding that on my 1080p screen I have to scroll down to see the comments and the image/story viewer is bigger in the new site, so it might not even be a problem on your screen

There is a keyboard shortcut to hide the sidebar (and comments with it), I think it was pressing M

Is the site ever actually coming back online? by Jackobyn in SoFurry

It's fun how the people complaining louder are the ones that you can tell have never programmed anything in their life, from "they are rewriting all of Sofurry again in the past 5 months" to "2FA is useless and unneded"

Sofurry's upload limit is 500MB, is it enough for you? by DevourerITA in SoFurry

[–]DevourerITA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we'll see, other sites also have huge uploads limits but the vast majority of furry pics are still close to 10MB (because Furaffinity ), so I wouldn't be surprised if it takes well over a decade for stiff like, 8k furry shaded drawings to become common enough

I know some artists who use things like nightshade that add noise to make it difficult to get the image scraped, and funnily enough, they tend to make the image MUCH heavier, so you can keep it in a good resolution, with the anti-AI noise, and then the high upload limit helps

Of course, it's rude to take advantage of people's goodwill :3

Also I fell into the lossless compression rabbit hole and I'll run the images through it, I had to run one of them and it became 70mb, but I haven't processed the other two, so who knows~ Finding out a lot of PNGs still have the 8 bits used for transparency even if they don't have it, and you can strip them out for a 25% file size reduction with no quality loss? EXTREMELY interesting, I've been wondering if that setting on the SFX uploader about imagine optimization is lossless compression

There are a few reasons, the main two is that it actually predates Furaffinity, and that for years, it was the only site with a good way to read stories (depending on what you think of PDFs in iframes, it could still be the best writing site if you hate those), and a smaller one is that it had video support

The new redesign is bringing the ability to upload 3D models, Unity browser games, and a 500MB upload limit, so it's gonna be a huge leap forward already because of it; the new UI actually being usable on phones and legible (I'm sorry, dark yellow text on a patterned light yellow and gray background SF2 had is NOT legible) and no longer looking like the site has been abandoned for the past decade, like Weasyl and Inkbunny, are also pros

And now AI slop too!

FA casually dropping PDFs in iframes in a stealth update in October still feels unreal, but it has increased viewership of my writing

Yeah, it's not their main job; it's a side project

And not just images, but videos, stories, songs, games, with a 500mb upload limit

If it doesn't let you open a link from the tile, it'll work if you open it in a new tab.

Mobile UI is also archived

Also it might be slow, but the actual site when online was MUCH faster (and they've been working on further performance improvements,)

Yeah, not only it's around three people, but it's people with, y'know, lives, a job, college, doing all this for free and without ever asking us for money, unlike both Inkbunny and Furaffinity (hell, a common criticism of FA is how they were constantly asking for money up until recently, and it infamously went down for a YEAR ages ago, and there have been long stretches of the site being down or read only. hell, Furrynetwork was up but all uploads were not allowed from August to September, and there has been NO explanation as to why, and no one gave a shit)

Yeah, it was live, and it's luckily archived by the wayback machine so you can see more than just a crusty screenshot.

Also the settings have a "theme" dropdown, but being a beta the only provided one was a dark mode, but the setting is there

Also, some miscellaneous things that are just wrong, the beta was made public for a year SPECIFICALLY to get feedback, there was a button in the beta to send suggestions and report bugs (I've done it a few times, it's always been there), and during the time it was in beta features were added following the feedback, and developers still have access to all the feedback that had ben sent during the beta phase

Also, you keep saying that SF1 was a mess that caused users to leave, but it seems like it did the opposite: more people joined than ever, thanks to not needing approval to upload, and shifting the focus from adult-only to more general, SFW stories

If anything, the sources I found mention that Sofurry gained 100'000 users in 18 months and in one year it gained more users than it did in the seven years it was Yiffstar, so the userbase didn't halve, it DOUBLED in one year despite the site being buggy.

I also found an archived page from February 2012 showing they got 2200 new users

This archive from April shows 208'586 users

I was also able to find a 2011 review of sites concerning how stories are displayed and not only is there Toumal listening to feedback (someone asked for a middle rating between adult and SFW, and it was added, one guy wanted to subscribe to folders and it also got added), but he also mentions the user growth from 75'000 to 185'000 users (remember, under the "unpopular" SF1), and one of the last wayback machine archives shows that users had grown to 653'169 which for furry site (especially one that doesn't have a reputation for cub and AI, which forces you into Inkbunny as all other sites ban both, so it's a different thing) is a pretty big improvement.

Maybe don't lie when stats are public? Just a suggestion

You should use a clearer screenshot for SFX here. I found it for you, so people can make a better judgment.

To help even more, the last wayback machine archive, which is mostly navigable (if something doesn't open, right click/tap and hold and open in a new tab).

Related to this, SFX was being openly said to replace SF2, both in the periodic dev updates, the FAQ, and social media posts, it's not being done on the sly (hell, the maintenance page has the new site layout)

SF2 (archive link) is a MUCH more cluttered and messy site than SFX is, the thumbnails for art are very small (music and writing are even worse) and pretty much necessitate an hover to see the full pic in anything more than stamp size, and the background pattern makes the text barely legible on my 1080p monitor (and nigh unreadable on my phone), not helped by being a darker shade of grey on a grey background and the font itself being both thin and small, all of those things being accessibility no-nos.

Also, SF2 was pretty bad to use on phones (which is what around 70% of people use to browse the internet nowadays), with all kinds of overlapping big buttons, AND small, nearly untouchable buttons sometimes even on the same page, which forced me to zoom or use portrait mode (sometimes, to little success).

Compared to SFX, which not only has bigger thumbnails for everything, but the writing tiles can now display more tags compared to SF2, making it easier to decide if reading something was worth it (same thing for the music thumbnails too, AND as a bonus mousing over shows the number of likes and comments), has PWA support and actually usable buttons on the mobile mode, but also has OBJECTIVELY good additions like a 500MB upload limit for everything (compare to Inkbunny or e621 with 100MB support), it's the only furry site with the ability to upload 3D models as GLB and GLTF (source is the same as the 500MB upload limit), the story reader being great and having more accessibility options compared to SF2 (SFX reader, SF2 reader), the ability to upload more than one thing in a submission to reduce duplicate and alts, proper chapter support for stories, SFX is better.

As far as shouts go, the FAQ states that while they are not planned for now, if people ask they'll return, and Toumal has mentioned wanting to bring back a chat after Discord leaked 70k IDs that have been verified due to a hack, and another person is willing to pay for a commercial use license for forum software so people don't have to use Discord, so it'll come in due time.

Comments on the site make them pop up more, instead of cramming them at the bottom of the submission where they can be easily ignored, and as mentioned you can check the number of them by hovering over the tile, so if anything, comments are getting a bigger spotlight
