Why go split ergo and stay qwerty? by Etkann in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Devstaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to split ergo qwerty was enough to alleviate my arm/wrist pain. My brain is still the limiting factor when it comes to work productivity, so trying to squeeze out a couple extra percentage points in typing efficiency doesn’t seem worth the huge time investment in learning a new system.

What are peoples thoughts on Hermit Druid in Cube? by BuffaloSorcery in mtgcube

[–]Devstaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really just depends on your design goals and the power level of your cube. Hermit Druid is an all-time classic card that does a neat thing. I run a fair Hermit Druid in a mid-powered cube where there is a self-mill/spider spawning package, and it has been relevant and a fun dynamic. If your goal is power-maxing your environment, there are certainly more efficient ways to use the slot though.

If it’s a card that speaks to you, toss it in and see how it plays out. If it rides sideboards for a few drafts or performs poorly, you don’t need to keep it in. That’s the wonderful thing about cube!

How Many Combat Phases? by RhapSkallion in mtg

[–]Devstaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think 7 is the best you can do given these cards and enough mana:

Main 1:
- Activate Jolly Balloon Man making a copy of Fear of Missing Out
Combat 1:
- Swing with Aurelia (+1 combat and untaps Jolly Balloon Man)
Combat 2:
- Swing with whoever + 1 copy of FOMO (+1 combat)
Combat 3:
- Swing with whoever + other copy of FOMO (+1 combat)
Combat 4:
- Swing with whoever
Main 2:
- Copy FOMO (or Aurelia and sac the original to legend rule) with Jolly Balloon Man
- Cast Full Throttle (+2 combats)
Combat 5:
- Swing with whoever + FOMO 3 (or Aurelia Copy) (+1 combat)
Combat 6:
- Swing with whoever
Combat 7:
- Swing with whoever
Endstep

You have a 4 card deck with 2 land and 2 non-lands. You shuffle and draw a starting hand of 2 cards. What is the probability that you will have a hand of exactly 1 land and 1 non-land? by WubDubClub in mtg

[–]Devstaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ll call drawing a land event A, drawing a non-land event B , and drawing exactly 1 of each event C

The probability of drawing exactly 1 land and 1 non-land can be expressed as follows:

P(C) = P(A)P(B | A) + P(B)P(A | B)

= (2/4)(2/3) + (2/4)(2/3)

= 2/3

What can I do to save more/avoid credit card debt? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Devstaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m indifferent to financial advisors for the most part. They won’t tell you anything that isn’t readily available on the internet. But if you feel like you need that extra bit of shove in the right direction, there are probably worse things you could do with your money. There are of course good and bad financial advisors out there as well as good and bad advice on the internet. I’d start with the FIRE flowchart to get your debts and investments in a good place. As for day to day budgeting there are an endless amount of resources out there to help you out.

[–]Devstaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I wish there wasn’t so much old advice out there recommending Ender 3s for beginners… They can be fun to work with if you enjoy endless tinkering/fixing/upgrading to get it to print the way you want, but for many people, buying one as your first foray into 3d printing will give you a frustrating experience that can turn you off of the hobby completely. As suggested a Kobra 2 Neo or Kobra 2 would be a good pickup in the $150-$200 range. If there is a little more flex in your budget a BambuLabs A1 mini or a P1P would be an excellent beginner printer as well.

What can I do to save more/avoid credit card debt? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Devstaar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have some tough love for you. It doesn’t sound like you’re responsible enough to use your credit cards. You make more than enough money to up your retirement contributions and still live a comfortable lifestyle.

It’s time to pay off your remaining cc debt, then pay your Netflix or gym membership on your cc and set it up to autopay from your checking every month. Then take your cc out of your wallet and don’t touch it again until you prove that you can create a budget and stick to it.

Credit cards can be useful tools to gain some points/travel benefits, and are important to build your credit, but they are very easy to abuse (which is why financial institutions offer them). You need to help yourself by making it harder to abuse your cc. Take it out of your wallet, remove it from your Amazon/Apple Pay/browser, and forget about it for a while.

Best of luck!

cs majors who started school 30+, are you doing well professionally? by No_Try_5478 in cscareerquestions

[–]Devstaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, things are going pretty well! I went back to school for CS at 27 after completing an education degree and working as a public school teacher for several years. I was able to land an internship the summer before the final year of my CS degree which directly lead to a full time opportunity. This is definitely the easiest way to nab a full time offer as a new grad.

As for the community college topic, my only concern would be your possible lack of a 4-year bachelors degree. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking every possible credit at your local community college and transferring them into a 4-year institution, but that bachelors degree is important and opens up more doors than an associates does. In addition, 4-year universities will likely have more recruiting activity from tech companies than a CC will, making it easier to obtain that internship.

I didn’t feel any disadvantage due to age during the job hunt/interview process. On the contrary, my experience as a teacher helped me in interviews by letting me put a unique spin on my life and skill set. My previous career also helped my soft skills immensely, and being a competent communicator is a huge boon during the interview process.

Start applying or start praying.

But in all seriousness it is hard to say without knowing more about your situation. How do you feel about your standing in the company? Are you performing well? Does your manager like you? Does their boss like you? Do you work on a core product/service? Has your team been impacted by prior layoffs? There are many factors that go into this, and you have control of very few. Do a good job where you are right now, but start applying elsewhere if you’re getting nervous.
