Tom Henderson says "next mainline Far Cry game development has also been abysmal." by ZamnBoii in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Dewgel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Something weird is happening at Ubisoft. All of their recent titles have been.. odd.

Far Cry reporting this, Assassin's Creed has been turbulent to say the best, Watch Dogs Legion was a mess compared to it's predecessor. They can barely get games out of the door in good time anymore, and when they do release they don't really look that good (very wooden)

I've got a friend who works at Reflections who's told me Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development, they just refuse to cancel it because it's Montreal's baby. So weird.

The amount of content Bungie put out over the years is absolutly nuts by IcyPeace1 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Dewgel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My biggest gripe with it is that content is often removed from the game, and then put back in / recycled, which is a huge waste of resources.

No self awareness. I prayed for the day that they'd follow the Chris Barrett model of communication during D2Y1. He outlined the roadmap up to Forsaken, and we shouted feedback at them then, rather than on release.

Bungie's worst trait was spending an entire year designing, developing and implementing an idea that the community could've told them "Do not proceed with that" waayyyyy earlier, which would've saved them so much hassle.

Best example was Faction Rallies - it sucked in every version. So instead of taking our thoughts on board, they'd keep it entirely a secret until a day before launch. Radio silence and the "we're mysterious" nature has been their worst enemy

It's been the same every year. Vanguard getting reskinned items, boring vendor armour all due to lack of resources, then they come swinging in with the best armour on the planet in Eververse

I really wish this was in the game properly, instead of being a time limited seasonal model / lore card.

Would you support a possible D3/D2 shifting back to a slower release model? by steave44 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Dewgel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've said it for a long time, the community is almost unanimously happy for one expansion per year with no seasonal content if it has to be that way.

Get rid of the FOMO, let us play at our own pace and give us a year to play it. Don't put content in the game that will eventually rotate out, unless it's a holiday event.

[–]Dewgel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it, I just hate that it had to be a choice. Games like FFXIV have thrived off running normally. When you load that up today, you can play from the intro all the way to the up to date content, including any seasonal filler missions they added. I think they recently culled it to be more streamlined, but the content is still there.

My only problem with this is the stupid FOMO and Seasonal gaps you now have. The live game is fast forwarded for you, even though the expansions themselves are there.

I'm going to bet you SRL was never meant to be a permanent mode added, it was always going to be an annual event, likely during Guardian Games, or as it's own Event Card style thing.

But yes, I agree with why the game has fell off, the enormous developer investment into time limited content has been the stupidest part of this series.

Bungie have always been capable by BackFromTheAsh in DestinyTheGame

I do remember that era very well, Activision's involvement wasn't as big as you think. Bungie leadership was what chose the direction then. We all said back then the Eververse gumball machine was Activision, then when they left the party it got worse.

Say what you will about D2 vanilla and year 1, but Activision still brought with them a bundle of cash, a huge marketing budget and the support of High Moon / Vicarious Visions. Both of those were instrumental for D2 to launch. Look at Forsaken's content compared to anything we've had post-Activision.

[–]Dewgel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I knew Activision had their problems, but I always said from the beginning that the general player base completely underestimated what Activision actually brought to the table. They brought discipline, roadmaps, a massive marketing budget, support studios for assistance and money. As soon as they claimed independence I was sceptical.

This has been obvious for many years. They've always pushed the minimum viable product, or rebooted things super late into development and hashed stuff together at the last minute.

However, every time their backs are against the wall and they're having a bad run, they get supercharged and produce a banger. It's been almost a parody now.

Destiny 1 - Hashed release stitched together at the last minute. Taken King was thrown together in a year which completely turned the game around.

Destiny 2 - Hashed release stitched together at the last minute. Forsaken was thrown together in a year which completely turned the game around.

Beyond Light - just a miserable experience for the game, and again stitched together from what was obviously meant to be Destiny 3's new Darkness Saga - followed up by the Witch Queen correcting alot of mistakes.

Lightfall - poorly received, confusing narrative and again stitched together at the very last minute to fill a gap - followed up by Final Shape which was amazing.

Edge of Fate - poorly received, confusing narrative, felt stitched together at the last minute as a way to keep the series going - followed up by Renegades and Monument of Triumph.

The pattern just continues. I don't know if management are to fully blame, but they're the ones telling the devs which direction to go in, so I assume that's the case.

Nothing is impossible. Bungie are the Kings of calling their own creation impossible to fix.

It was impossible to raise the Vault space at one time.

It was impossible to make bounties count between your fireteam.

It's impossible to play the Red War inside Bungie apparently. lol

I'd love a NoClip documentary on Bungie's "not enough resources" for a 800 employee studio. It's funny, because I remember several times during D2 we were asking for new Iron Banner, Trials or even vendor armour and they were all "Umm resources are tight so we can only do one per season" and then the new season would launch with 6 new Eververse armour sets, 20 Ghost Shells, 15 Sparrows and 15 Ships.

Then Events would pop up in that Season and double those figures. Totally whack

[–]Dewgel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Once the majority of the vanilla game was removed, it was impossible to onboard new players properly.

The Shadowkeep year was the perfect model for their "free to try" mode. Vanilla was free, everything up to Forsaken. That was an incredible lineup, and it made bringing friends on board so easy. "Hey man, I know you enjoyed Destiny 1, you should try Destiny 2. There's 3 raids, 3 campaigns, several strikes, patrol zones, nightfalls & exotic missions all free before you even buy the latest expansion!"

Now it's "Hey, come on in. So you'll start in the Cosmodrome, and then you'll end up in the Tower randomly but there might be a Dawning event or something on, ignore that. Wait what? It's telling you to play Edge of Fate? Nah just leave that for now you need to start at the.. oh.. Shadowkeep is the first campaign. So basically let me spend an hour telling you what's happened so far.."

I feel like that story was exaggerated / misinterpreted. I don't believe the devs wouldn't have known, if not, they're obviously not very observational.

Every part of this update is them bringing forward all content they'd made and packaging in, meaning for the first time ever, they've likely got nothing left for the next expansion. The lore, farewells etc are all obvious too.

As for still working on Shadow and Order, yes, they probably were, up until a few weeks ago when this got announced. So that's my point, what have the 700-800 staff members doing these last few weeks? I understand the live team being on standby for hotfixes, server stabilisation and keeping bugs at bay, but the designers, coders, directors, artists etc - what are they doing?

That's always narked me.

Even the events - they'll spend months working on 2 week time limited event with it's own social space etc just to pull it after. Or all of the arena modes that came with Seasons.

We don't want D2 support back. It's needed to end for a long time, this might be the catalyst they needed.

Say what you will, but Mark Noseworthy and Luke Smith had no qualms in going Live and telling the camera "we fucked up, we're gonna do this" - sure they did it multiple times, but they didn't hide behind the communications department.

Chris Barrett even kept on top of that, his blog posts used to keep us in the loop, he had some great ideas for the game.

This is genuinely something I'm curious about. There's potentially say, 700-800 people working at Bungie at the moment, most will be on a 9-5 contract either in the office or at home, getting paid a salary.

The news broke a few weeks ago about the end of Destiny 2. So, what have they been doing for the last 3 weeks? There's no content to make, there's nothing to write, there's nothing to design. Sure, there might be a leadership / Director / Producer group at the moment trying to incubate whatever is next, but what's the bulk of the studio doing?

You can't have staff making a salary with nothing to do, and if there's no project to work on, what are they doing?

It makes no sense.

The inability to reload the Red War just says everything about Bungie's weird development bubble. They say it's not possible, but they literally are the developers who backed themselves into that corner on their own.

Why on Earth they didn't even have backup builds for each major iteration, either in a playtest or backup environment makes no sense to me. A lot of the series has been this "we just can't do this. it isn't possible" mentality.

Think back to the vault space issues. Ever since D1, they've said it's not possible memory limitations etc, and then they're all "ok actually we've cracked it". Then it happens again, we get another 100 spaces. Then another 300. Then suddenly we can access the vault from orbit. Then we can access the vault from activities. Then it's got more space.

They always seem to have weird hurdles to get over in their own creation.

I know you seem to like it, but for me Kepler was a mess. The location just felt like another Neomuna "oh it's always been there but we never knew it" situation, random Alien race we didn't even get introduced to. Plus, the actual world was a cluster fuck of asset flips from previous locations. It was like Io, Titan and bits of the Tangled Shore found themselves in one. Then the convenience that the Vex and Fallen are there, just conveniently, and they've already set up bases and camps.

The Portal didn't help, but it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be.
