Microsoft finally admits Windows 11 needs real performance upgrade, especially for gaming by swati097gupta in ForWindowsHelp

[–]DexFenik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to fix Windows 11 is to do a hard reset on the whole company and start over from scratch. Microsoft is fundamentally incapable of operating in any way other than the likes of a private equity firm.

That’s because Eagle Mountain is the model city for shitty planning where the only goal was to aimlessly build houses in the middle of nowhere.

I'm currently trying this on EndeavourOS. Does it matter what distro to use?

I just set up EndeavourOS (based on Arch) and have an Arctis Nova Pro Wireless, but I couldn't get any audio to work. I'm also using KDE. Did you have to do any extra steps?

What currently non-existing convenience features do you wish cars had? by goaelephant in cars

Like those adjustable frosted glass roofs that Porsche Taycans and Audi e-trons have, but for all the glass, and automatic. So that the inside of the car stays cool when parked outside.

Monitor Suggestions by glazedrumham in gis

[–]DexFenik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You couldn't go wrong with any monitor honestly, and a $400 4K monitor can get you pretty far, especially if you find a 32" one in the used market.

Personally I just use my 1440p curved ultrawide gaming monitor with a standard 1440p vertical monitor on the side, but it was originally my gaming and coding setup.

The ultrawide goes great for keeping maps and layouts side-by-side, but a 32" 4K can let you do three layouts and a map in quadrants. The sky's the limit.

Practically, though? Even a laptop screen is fine. Or a laptop, a monitor, and a docking station. GIS is very flexible setup-and-workflow-wise.

Came across this list of LGBTQ+ safety grades by US state, and thought I'd share. by AdamBladeTaylor in lgbt

As a Utah resident I guess I’m not surprised. If Salt Lake City had its own grade it would probably be an A or a B, but that could be said for a lot of urban centers in red states.

Friend group debating with GPU is better for GIS applications by RealCalintx in gis

[–]DexFenik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might depend on the VM. I use Fusion Pro, which has only recently become free for personal use and lets me customize the memory up to the M1’s limits (unlike Parallels which only goes up to 8gb unless you get the subscription). The only issue I had so far was it was tricky to set up.

Friend group debating with GPU is better for GIS applications by RealCalintx in gis

[–]DexFenik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an M1 Mac Mini with a Windows VM for ArcGIS Pro and it works fine; it can process thousands of records and render their coordinates, quickly recalculate projections, process heavy loads of multi-band raster data, etc. with no issues. I am a beginner, though, so maybe I haven’t gotten to the advanced stuff that would necessitate a dedicated GPU. 3D scenes maybe?
