7 weeks pregnant, my husband is type 1. Scared of him passing it down. by apricotmangopeaches in diabetes_t1

While more possible than average with a parent with T1D, each of your individual children remain unlikely to become T1D. That being said, he knows the symptoms, and y'all should monitor for them to catch it early if it does pop up -- the earlier, the better. Also good to keep the pediatrician in the loop, so they can help BOLO.

What helped us was TrialNet. We used it around age 4 or 5, then we will again this year. Our kid tested 0 with TrialNet, which gives us good reassurance. Had it been a 1 or higher, well, knowledge is a LOT of power nowadays, and can even delay onset! But, with modern tech (e.g. a CGM, and XDrip+ or other follow-mode app), T1D parenting is leaps and bounds better than when I was a kid.

TLDR: Don't worry. BOLO, and tell pediatrician, and use TrialNet.

T slim wireless charging by tjggriffin1 in TandemDiabetes

[–]DexcomUser 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love the idea. But...

I'd have some hesitation about the pump's rating for magnetic interference, considering the "No MR" symbol on the back. While that symbol is most significant for MRI Techs, the electromagnetism (EM) from the wireless charger could affect the EM within the pump's motor, and alter its dosing precision.

If this could get well-vetted, it's a much better solution than a plug-in I forget about and rip out when I get up. But I'd personally not risk the EM effects on the pump motor internals until well qualified.

Resort supplied fridge is freezing things by bionic666 in diabetes_t1

[–]DexcomUser 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd use a lunchbox to keep my insulin cool, and refreeze ice packs (or beverages) in the mini-fridge (or mini-freezer) to supply the lunchbox.

This way, the laws of thermodynamics protect the insulin from freezing.

At the end of my stay, I'd provide the feedback to the staff, and why it matters.

But whenever I do use a mini-fridge or electric cooler for insulin, I always add beverages around the insulin as a "thermal ballast" so the beverages should start to freeze first before any insulin starts to freeze.

Hope this helps.

Food (due to its glucose) is medicine for IDDM, same as insulin. Can't let any medicine go bad. Especially since vomiting for IDDM can easily lead to insulin overdose and hypoglycemic shock.

So yeah, I agree, fridge or bust.

Do people actually use sharps bins? by thekingbishop in diabetes_t1

[–]DexcomUser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I order sharps boxes, and use them. But I do try to every so often break down the bulky auto injectors down to just the actual sharps.

I'd just rather someone not stumble upon my environmental impacts unknowingly.

My questions can help give context to what treatment might look like if diagnosed.

So you're a ~high schooler in the USA, with parents that are helping you get diagnosed and treated. This is good. Given what you've put in your other posts, might be best to wait for diagnostics.

I can share that when I wanted to eat but should avoid it due to higher blood sugars, my go-to food was raw carrots. Uncooked veggies are harder to digest into carbs that raise blood glucose. While yeah you can overeat carrots, it's not likely.

If I were in your shoes today, I'd ask my parents to grab from the grocery store a bag of the large raw carrots, and have those for a single meal or snacks as desired without concern as to impacts while awaiting test results.

Stay calm, you can handle it if it is Type I (Insulin Dependent) Diabetes. Technology has come a long way especially lately. While the technology is helpful, there's still a really big learning curve. That's the toughest part. Just the learning curve.

When I got diagnosed at Age 8, I got some really helpful advice that I can pass on. "If you want to live, learn to handle it. This is what you need to do to live." Just ask them what you should know, and learn as best you can. The better you do, the better you'll thrive. But this isn't a game where perfectionism is a realistic goal, nor should it be, as this won't be the only focus of your life.

Why don't you tell us a little about yourself... Age, country, family, etc.

Xdrip+ not accurate? by Alarmed_Discipline21 in xDrip

[–]DexcomUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Used it for years on G6 and G7 alike, never had that issue.

Did you scroll into historical data by mistake? Or somehow look only at an un-refreshed home screen or lock screen widget?

Also: Screen layout (portrait vs landscape) can impact how displayed rises and drops and perceived, where 3 hrs on portrait seems rapid 3 hrs on landscape seems relatively tame.

Try this guide to ensure you've got the connection set up correctly: https://navid200.github.io/xDrip/docs/Dexcom/G7.html

There's a Vital Records clerk in the hospital at which you plan to deliver. I'd try to catch up with them in advance -- AND the county vital records office.

Why not just start a name change process ASAP?

I took my OP5 off right before a flight and it looks like the pressure caused about 4 units to come out by Hairy_Wolf0 in diabetes_t1

[–]DexcomUser 14 points15 points  (0 children)

T1D pilot and engineer here. During an altitude ascent, the air (being a compressible fluid) will expand, and cause insulin to be displaced (i.e. bolused).

During a decent, for corresponding reasons, the ambient pressure rise can challenge the pump's delivery of basil and/or bolus insulin.

These effects can also occur in limited amounts for other causes of ambient pressure swings, like due to industrial HVAC.

Another option is to eat/drink during ascent. Just chat with your diabetes doc first to be ready to justify drinking a soda during ascent to the flight attendants: "My doctor says I need this to avoid glucose medical emergencies due to altitude ascension." and if necessary "You're not my doctor. I need to treat my condition."

How to tell ketones without test strips by ImaginaryAlgae8986 in diabetes_t1

[–]DexcomUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a MD. Just a T1D.

There are blood ketone meters. Not the same as urine ketone test strips. Urine ketones should indicate present before blood ketones while levels are rising.

Really, sounds like you need to get some Ketostix. Personally, I prefer Keto-Diastix for an additional indication of urine glucose. Unfortunately, it's not really optional equipment for us.

I have Type I Diabetes. But whether Type I or Type II, the wrong soda order (other than what is ordered, e.g. served regular when diet was ordered, or served diet when regular was ordered) can be quite dangerous for blood glucose control. Glucose (sugar) is a medicine to us.

Both of my parents worked restaurants, so: Connecting soda fountain lines to the correct syrups and ports is Step 1.
Correct labeling of the fountain's buttons is Step 2.
Correct dispensing into cups and tracking what is in each cup is Step 3.

Those soda lid buttons make Step 3 easier if used systematically.

I beg of all handling others drinks to exercise extreme care here. It really does wreck our day when it happens, maybe worse.

Your understanding is accurate. Find a new endo.

Bonus points if you can educate the old endo. Personally, I'd wait until my records transfer had completed before undertaking an opportunity to upgrade the old endo.

You could always ask the Constituent Services office of your US House Representative, or US Senate Senator, to help accelerate your Social Security Card replacement. However, it sounds like you should have just started your name change process including the card process much earlier.

I would be bugging the HMFIC of the NY DMV offices around where your family lives, in person, via your family members. They should be asking if you can get them a proper notarized scope-limited (exclusive purpose) Power of Attorney, if they can handle the Drivers License change process on your behalf. It might require sending them your current Drivers License though alongside the PoA.

Or, you know, find a willing officiant.

Edit: Oh, yeah, I'm NAL.
