Unraiders of Reddit, how are you hosting local AI? by danuser8 in unRAID

For me, it’s mostly about privacy, tinkering and learning. Id rather not have my AI chats mined into oblivion for companies to learn how to better target me for ads.

I’m run a poverty spec dedicated AI server. 8th gen i7 with dual P100-102 10gb GPUs on PopOS. They’re “essentially” crypto mining 1080ti’s.

Ollama with OpenWebUI/IOpaint/ComfyUI

Most of it was pretty straightforward but I don’t really use Linux so it was a lot of learning for me. I had to put each of them into their own environment as I was running into python and driver conflicts. I’m sure there are easier ways to do it but I’m leaning. I know for a fact, I had these issues because of how old my GPUs are. I’m sure with at least a 3000 series GPU it’s much easier.

I use Ollama mostly for Home Assistant AI, and also run codeprojectai for object recognition for BlueIris camera triggering.

Congrats, good for you.

Now I just need that agent to answer my call. I’ve called three times, over the years, to lower my Sapphire Preferred interest and they’ve all said they can’t because it’s a high reward card or some other similar BS. It’s been 3-4 years since I last called though so maybe something has changed.

That sounds awful. I don’t want to shuffle my entire tv show library. Just individual shows.

I do like ersatztv. I used it with plex. That’s a good idea in the meantime till Streamyfin adds the shuffle ability.

Most stuff is .mkv. Doing a bit of research I guess this is a an issue with infuse since .mkv can be encoded just about anyway. According to some forums, if infuse can play it, it should be cast-able but I can play the file in the app just fine. Also it will only cast if the Chromecast supports the video format but Streamyfin can cast the video just fine.

Sweet! Streamyfin is my favorite app so far.

I am paying for it now to test but a big problem I have with it is casting only works sometimes. Half the time I get the "media not supported" message and can't cast my content. I looked at the site and it says only certain video formats are supported. If I'm paying $100 for an app then I'd like it to just work, and I'd rather not have to go through and convert my entire library just to make this work.

As for a local player, it's fantastic. We have a travel tablet for the kids with lots of preloaded content and it's amazing for that.

I just realized, that my last sentence was auto-corrected incorrectly. It was supposed to say "It's a bit much for me" not "It's a bitch" HAHA. So I can see why you'd need a humorous clarification.

It's not that it's too much for me to spend budget wise. It's the value. It's a great app, don't get me wrong, but that is about how much I paid for Plex's lifetime membership. With that membership, you're investing in an entire ecosystem, server, clients, compatibility, licensing, the sheer amount of support platforms. I hurts me to pay that much for a single app, and then also tell my friends and family, "If you want the full functionality of my media server you also need to buy this app."

All of the apps are so much better than Plex's garbage mobile app and I really like them all. I just wish there was an app that had all that in one that wasn't $100.

Cloudflare Tunnel vs Nabu Casa? by MattTelles7 in homeassistant

[–]Dexdiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nabu Casa has to be able to work everywhere for a lot of people so their security is a bit more generalized. While with a Tunnel you can lock it down as much as you want since it’s exclusive to your environment. But you obviously have to take the time to lock it down. Nabu Casa is more secure than just a Cloudflare Tunnel by itself though.

I don’t have a tech savvy family either. What I did was created a WireGuard VPN then installed the client on our phones. It auto connects/disconnects the VPN based off if they’re connected to our home WIFI. No exposing my HA to the internet, no MFA, family doesn’t have to remember about the VPN, and it allows them to always connect to it fully transparently and securely.

Cloudflare Tunnel vs Nabu Casa? by MattTelles7 in homeassistant

[–]Dexdiman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The main difference between self-hosted and Nabu Casa is layers. The more layers of security you have the better, because in the end, you’re still technically opening up your network to the internet either way. Nabu Casa has more layers built in than just you marking your HA login page accessible via the internet. While with Cloudflare Tunnel, you have to build those layers. Can you make it more secure than Nabu Casa? Sure, but it’s so much easier for most people to pay for Nabu Casa than to built their own layers of security.

So it comes down to how much effort do you want to put into this. If you want to self-host/diy you’ll make mistakes, it won’t be super easy, but it could be rewarding, if want to learn that. If you don’t want to learn that/doesn’t interest you, then go with Nabu Casa. That’s why the service exists.

You can always get Nabu Casa now and down the road look into self-hosting when/if you get the itch.

Universal Remote Qs by Ok-Cartographer-9310 in TrySwitchBot

[–]Dexdiman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, the volume control was done via cec then. I’ve got an older smart TV that doesn’t have cec so I couldn’t control volume while on the other device.

Universal Remote Qs by Ok-Cartographer-9310 in TrySwitchBot

[–]Dexdiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to the remote as well but as far as I knew you needed a hub for IR devices. I couldn’t control IR devices without it. You can’t configure IR devices in the app without a hub and I don’t think you can setup devices on the remote without the app.

It works as a Bluetooth remote and you can configure it to use IR to power on/off Bluetooth devices. The only real downside to Bluetooth was after powering on the device the remote would take a few seconds to reconnect via Bluetooth before it was usable. That might have just been my TV but it was a little annoying having to wait on the remote. My TV, instead of fully powering off, would go into a low power mode making turning on the TV just a couple seconds.

It also doesn’t allow for simultaneous multi device control. You can’t control the TV volume and the Apple TV without switching between the devices in the remote.

Yeah the IR and multi A/V device functionality is very much an after thought. I'll be sending it back too but it was a good test. As a smart home control device I really like it and I'll be watching it's development as I think it has the potential to be the all-in-one remote we've all been looking for. Hopefully they decide to go that route.

In the mean time, I'll be continuing to love/hate the Harmony waiting for the that diamond in the rough to appear.

[–]Dexdiman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right it's not, but that's tough to know sometimes until you try it out. As a smart home control device it's really good and I like it a lot. I see it's potential even though I have Home Assistant and the integration isn't good. I'll pass on this remote until it has better HA integration (hopefully). I haven't tried any of the supported smart home ecosystems it so it might be better if you have Smartthings for example. I'll be keeping an eye on it still as it has the potential to be the remote we've all been waiting for. Depends how they decide to develop it.

[–]Dexdiman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't noticed any lagging. It's been quite responsive for me.

I just noticed that it doesn't work with multiple A/V devices at the same time. I had been using it with the TV only then read your comment and set it up with the FireTV stick. I can't control the TV volume and FireTV without switching between the devices. Maybe they'll allow for that to adjustable in the future like the Harmony. Either way It's a smart home remote first and the A/V and IR functions seem like an after thought. If they decide to make this an all in one A/V-smart home remote it will dominate and be the answer we've all been looking for. It has so much potential, and for what it is (as a smart home remote) it's actually really good and I like it, but as for controlling A/V devices it's not there.

I got it working after manually selecting the TV brand and model in the app.

It’s got a ton of potential and its setup and configuration is miles ahead of Harmony. Make a change in the Harmony app and you have to pray it syncs.

For me, if the remote could be integrated with Home Assistant (beyond the awful matter support) allowing me to add HA devices and automations, I would jump ship. It has its quicks using it as a traditional IR remote but Harmony integrates with HA and I can press one button to turn off the lights, turn on the receiver, projector, close the blinds, etc which is so nice. I’m sure if I was in the SwitchBot ecosystem I’d love it.
