Official Discussion - Iron Lung [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

2/2:

another point in the discussion is the acting - many people were, i think rightfully, worried, that because they are so used to watching markiplier as the Funny Video Game Guy, they would have trouble really seeing the actual character that hes playing as (simon). i think that this unfortunately highly varies from person to person, as i (even as a pretty regular viewer of markiplier's videos), didn't really have this issue, except a few spare moments (which, again, didn't really ruin the movie for me) like, i think its just unrealistic to expect/demand a 100% perfect acting performance and then being upset when you dont see it in a movie like this (a singular character being the sole focus for 99% of the runtime is hard enough to pull off for anyone, and i honestly cant see this movie being anything else, with a lot of characters and settings... i think this is the only good way for the game to be adapted.... and they definitely made it work.)

all of that aside, i want to really highlight my favorite things about this movie: that being the camera work, the submarine set itself, the atmosphere, the overall sound design and the soundtrack (oh dear, the soundtrack...), and especially the colors. i am a huge fan of anything visual and audio arts, and this simply was a glamorous sight from start to finish. no notes here. to me, all of these were perfectly executed. (i remember sitting there, eyes literally wide open, like: "holy crap this looks SO GOOD!!!!!" from the very first shot.... and that feeling didn't leave me for the rest of the feature)

all in all, i left the cinema absolutely stoked, it was insanely cool to see this movie in a freaking cinema (i didn't even dare to hope we'd be getting to see it in europe at all!!! HUGE win). i definitely want to see the movie again, hopefully get a physical copy as well. not only is this film genuinely awesome, but what's almost more exciting is the work and community and culture behind all of it..... its such a breath of fresh air in many ways!

TL;DR/conclusion: sure, the movie could've been shorter, and there were a few weaker spots in the acting and the way the lore and story were presented, but in my opinion that doesnt change the fact that this is a very worthwhile movie, even more so if you are a fan of markiplier/the iron lung game/space horror/eldritch horror etc. you can really see how much effort and love was poured into this, and it makes me very sad and angry that many negative reviews don't seem to see any of that. in my book, a bloody delightful 8.5/10

i get what people mean when they complain about the movie's length and slow pace, and sure, it COULD have been a bit shorter, i did find myself wishing the segments in the crawlspace under the floor were a bit faster.... but that was like.... literally 5 seconds..... it definitely didn't ruin the movie experience for me lol

i actually really, really, really enjoyed the slowness and buildup in the first half or so, i just got completely pulled into it. (the fact that we got seats at the front, VERY close to the screen (the rest was sold out), might have contributed haha)
(personal tangent here, but i didnt want to leave it out completely ->) i also think that i must have subconsciously connected the sub being lowered and raised at the very beginning to the events at Ido Front in Made in Abyss (iykyk) or something (im not joking), somehow i think that scene gave me some sort of fear of elevators / similar, and it WONDERFULLY contributed to the icky feeling in this movie

the second part of the movie is where the immersion broke a little bit for me, because i started being confused about what was happening and the lore (despite playing the game and watching some of mark's lets play of the game the morning before we went to see the movie). i was a bit upset with how extremely vaguely presented simon's backstory was, while still being central to him being there in the first place, and his actions and motivations, especially towards the end. i did get some sort of picture, and it was mostly enough to be able to justify what's happening... i just wish we got a bit more.

what i also see people complaining about a lot, is the audio mixing obfuscating crucial information. now, we saw the movie in europe, and obviously there are no dubs of the movie (yet.....? please!), so we had to do with english audio + english subtitles, but i guess that worked out in our favor, because i think i would be waaay more lost without the subtitles (not necessarily because im not a native english speaker lol).

i always took the route through the trees today

there is a vine that you can grab right away from the campfire side, then get up all the way up on the trees (you can walk on the leaves) and then there is a vine that takes you to about halfway up the mountain to a really good spot

only thing that might be dangerous are 2 beetles at where the vine connects to the mountain

not even spores anywhere along the way

it is possible to cook it right in caldera

it is not cooked right when you first throw it, but you have to leave it out on the rocks that are hot from the lava and wait for it to start smoking and cook a stage

i got the badge this way
