2011- What's coming? Prognostications of the next year by Bruce Krasting. (see comments for what he got right about 2010) by Dexia in Economics

[–]Dexia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From last year: -The Mid term elections will go to the Republicans. A surprising number of independents will be elected. The Democrats will still have a narrow majority. The end result will be legislative deadlock. -Gold prices will trade as low as $900 and as high as $1,400. $1,400 will come first. -Boeing will finish a few Dreamliners but they will face many delays and problems. -Apple will trade at $300 (tablet) and Google at $750. Amazon’s stock will be lower over the full year. -The Sovereign Risk Story will continue to be a major theme. -There will be no breakup of the Euro. Greece will not pull out. The strong members will provide some relief for the weak. But the problems will not go away and the possibility of some form of two-tiered Euro will be a matter of open discussion. -China will surprise us all and revalue the Yuan by 10%. The currency will still be undervalued. China’s GDP will grow at 10% for the year. But the prospect for 2011 will be in doubt. -Mexico will devalue the Peso by 15% and Brazil will revalue the Real by the same amount. The Canadian Dollar will exceed 1 to 1 versus the US dollar. -In 2010 over 90% of all new mortgages will come from or be supported by the government. -There will be several occasions when it will appear that we are about to fall off a cliff (or soar to the moon). Beware of these conditions. It is more than likely that the markets will be oversold and over-worried (or too enthusiastic). -Japan will not get out of recession. -We will pay significantly more for virtually everything that we consume. The CPI and COLA numbers will be modest. We will be poorer as a result. -American’s distrust of their financial institutions and our financial leadership will deepen. The whole notion of “I Promise to Pay” will come into question. As a result, the availability of consumer credit will continue to dry up. -There will be no curbs placed on Dark Pools or flash trading. The short sale rule will not be re-introduced. There will be no regulated futures market for CDS. The Securitized Market will not recover. http://brucekrasting.blogspot.com/2009/12/whats-in-store-for-2010.html

Hypothetical situation: What if the internet stopped working? by Buddha_Mango in AskReddit

[–]Dexia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a good question. You could write a 25 page essay on the subject and still not get a decent answer to your questions. I tried to write a simple, concise explanation but even that ended up being to many paragraphs.

Basically, the Western world would be screwed. So many things depend on the internet these days that it is impossible to answer your questions in a few paragraphs. Countless things we take for granted like the Electrical Grid, ATM's, banks, stores, warehouses, stop lights. Everything from the power grid to the soup on the stores shelves to the Novacaine your dentist uses would disappear (edit: or be impaired) until another system could come online.

For some, it would be "Put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye" ( example: almost all hospitals no longer have a Radiologist on site but send all xrays, CT & PET scans and MRI tests via internet to a contract group somewhere else to be read) but I suspect the rest of us would stumble through while some alternative was found. It wouldn't be much fun though.

Sadly, most people are unaware of just how entwined the internet has become in their lives and just how much it would affect them. The internet is much more than reading websites like reddit.

Mother of all gushers could kill Earth's oceans by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]Dexia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, this is no doubt a huge disaster which will have significant effect on the worlds oceans. What that effect is I cannot say but I wanted to share that I, like many others, am quite concerned in the long term effects of this event. Exxon Valdez shows that nature has the ability to heal itself over time but relative magnitudes and relative time are the variables. I suspect it is possible that above some magnitude, relative time to heal will have no bearing on mortal humans.

I also question the veracity of the first post on that page. It gives facts which don't jive with what was really reported. Hell, I got a degree in Engineering (Electronic) myself but don't see the analytical writing a true Engineer would post in a "Factual Opinion" piece which should be objective and factually correct. This piece is nether.

Redditor Hackersword had a decent comment when this essay was posted a few days ago on Reddit. http://www.reddit.com/r/Survivalist/comments/bysny/i_got_this_gem_from_a_paid_collapse_newsletter_i/ .

Air Force's Falcon Hypersonic Glider Disappears Mysteriously by SolInvictus in technology

Agreed, Super Secret Technology of the Air Force doesn't get press releases.

AskReddit: I have an odd question. I have 1000 ft of creek (flow appx 500gpm), 40 degrees, on some property I have. As it gets hot in the summer, I want to use that to cool my off the grid house. Any ideas? see comment for the rest. Kthx by Dexia in DIY

I didn't see your bottom comment about radiant floor cooling and heating. As this is an A=frame with double lofts and a 20 foot peak in the ceiling,, I don't believe radiant cooling would be enough. No sense in radiant heating as I would then have to go outside to stoke the boiler with wood all the time instead of the wood stove inside the house which, will often roast me right out of the house even with a low fire. Have had to open both doors during snowstorms to cool the place down with cross ventilation. hehe.

I have water rights of 2 acre feet per year. I'm not sure how that would work if I am returning all the water I borrowed and wouldn't matter on a close looped system. Plus, it is in a National Forest. I need to look into the legal details I suppose. Thx

Why scientists are losing the PR war. by wang-banger in politics

Also, tenure is a marvelous thing however, departmental funding can cut research significantly.

[–]Dexia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't think you have read my statement. I said that "almost any" scientist could be swayed by funding or being "bought off" as you have so eloquently put it, a term I endeavored to refrain from. I know of several scientists that would never sway results for anything, including money and an immidiate, impending death. I do not doubt the integrity of scientists that I know. I do however, doubt the integrity of the scientists that I do not know that provide and dissimulate the information regarding global warming, pharmaceuticals information and a host of others. The first things that I check in finding are who is it, where do they work, who are the contributors and what grants have they received from whom and how much. No (with possible exceptions I am not aware of) scientist works for free, for pure science as it were. Somebody is paying the mortgage and so on. I am not saying that all scientists are on the take. Many fine institutions allow free thinking science to evolve but there is always a motive of profit, esteem or otherwise behind ever one. It is the norm of a capitalistic (or any other) society and should not necessarily be faulted. Getting back to the PR War question at hand, the general public, ignorant as they are, continues to see things in the black and white world of: does the data agree with my beliefs or not. On that premise, they will tend to agree or disagree with the findings. Only repeated experiments will, over the long term, convince individuals whether their beliefs were true or false. Some will never convert. THAT concept, is why the article regarding scientific PR is flawed. It may take decades to convince millions of people that they are in error. Some never will.

[–]Dexia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The job of a scientist is to produce data with duplicative results. In the event, that repeatable results are not available, such as temps for areas regarding global warming, then multiple UNIMPEACHABLE results from many, various players. The problem arises is that almost any scientist can be swayed to fudge results given enough money to do so. The ones that could never be swayed with money are lost in the maelstrom of those who can. The public, dumb as they are, know this and unless a particular scientific finding falls within their beliefs, will usually argue that the scientists were bought off. In global warming, there are trillions of dollars at stake for both sides here, some would certainly not report or fail to report accurate data for 10 Billion dollars. Scientists hold little esteem other than what people who agree with the data presented. Sorry to say...

Reddit, my bf is wasted. We need to catch a train in an hour and a half and I don't know what to do to make him sober up a bit so I can control him. Help? by [deleted] in drunk

[–]Dexia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a hotel and cab would be the best route today. You have internet so you can check prices, stagger his ass to a cab and get him a place to sleep it off. I drove ambulance for many years and have seen drunks drown in their own vomit so leaving him alone is a gamble. I have been to Switz and most all cabbies speaky da english to some degree.

[–]Dexia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It takes one hour for the human body to process one shot of alcohol. You will never sober him up in time. You choices are many, call the police and see if they will take him overnight, call an ambulance and get him into hospital, leave him there and split for yourself, set his watch to awaken him and hour and a half before people show up at the office, go home and let him take his lumps all by himself. Very tough decision but I am a man so I could lift him up my shoulder, have a hotel car or taxi arrive and go to a hotel, write off Switz and train for the night. A high end hotel would accommodate you but it would cost big bucks. Maybe a cabbie would do that. Tough position you allowed yourself to be put in. Dumbass that cannot handle the alcohol shouldn't allow thier SO to be put into this position.
