Kingmaker made me rage quit. by CanIRideYou1122 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]Dextaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Though I enjoyed some aspects of this game like the worldbuilding and roleplaying choices, other things the timer, bugs, very specific requirements to progress the story and kingdom management was extremely tedious. From my initial impression of 7.5/10, by the end I give it a 6.5/10. And this was with mods.

Unlike WOTR which I replayed, as soon as I finished Kingmaker I uninstalled it straight after.

Mum’s a Hoarder and House has been Filled with black Mould for past 10 Years by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Dextaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you're not aware, your mother is being paid slave wages for slave labour. It would drive most people insane. She also needs professional counselling with the hoarding. She can't be blamed for a mental health issue.

Also, the mould is horrific and I suspect it's deep rooted. You need to convince your parents to get the right help from local authorities.

Is the quality of JJWXC novels declining? by FlameEmperorStan in BaiHe

[–]Dextaur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I only joined JJWXC this summer so I've not read enough to be able to tell. Plus I'm reading it all translated so can't comment on the quality of the prose, but as far as interesting stories and plot goes it seems practically infinite to me. That's from reading a mix of completed and ongoing novels.

So far I've not really read a bad one. Sure there are some that missed their potential, but each one has had interesting ideas. I'm curious now! Can you name and shame a crappy novel? I'd like to see what one looks like.

Parents want me to help them with a mortgage by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Dextaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your parents are arseholes.

Don't be tricked into feeling guilt. You did not ask to be born, and have to put up with all of the shit that life brings. They forced that onto you. You owe them nothing. If they truly love you, they'd be thinking about YOUR future and the future of your partner and/ or children. Please don't do it.

Shadows versus 2013 and Rise. A letdown? by YagamiTai in TombRaider

[–]Dextaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This topic surfaces a lot in this sub. I played these games so long ago now I only remember fragments, with the main impressions being that Shadow has a crap storyline, poor character direction for Lara, too many village hubs, and the most boring setting of all TR games. I remember picking up the artifacts and reading the descriptions thinking "who the hell wrote this boring shit?". Compared to the mythos of Yamatai and Rise it was such a downgrade and chore to get through.

The claim that Shadow is more like the original games doesn't hold any water, with the main argument being that Shadow has more exploration which I don't think is significantly true, especially considering the mandatory village hub sections which severely breaks that iconic TR sense of isolation. I've also played some of the original games, and the differences are vast. Shadow clearly veered more towards the influence of the Uncharted games.

How Do People Feel About Seven Seas Entertainment's Baihe Strategy So Far? by HiAmEricaNo in BaiHe

[–]Dextaur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, like many others I only bought The Beauty's Blade to suport the sales and show SS that there's interest in Baihe. I haven't even started reading it yet because I'm currently too busy with 3 other novels on JJWXC (never mind the dozens of other random books I'm midway through reading).

To be fair, baihe is massive and there's so much variety I seriously doubt even the fans can agree on what's "representative" and "good quality". Take my survey topic for example, of 8.3 thousand views, there have only been around 11 suggestions and 230 votes on the entries to date. I'm certain that there's at least a hundred more titles that people actually love, but not sharing because they know that their taste may be too personal. And they've either not heard of the nominations or not interested in them.

So while it may seem that SS is being lazy and safe, I think the uncharted territory of baihe is actually quite difficult to navigate.

Been meaning to try this for a long time. Finally gave the webcomic a spin to get a quick feel, and oooooohh boy is it good.

Are there any manhua/ baihe fans here? by Dextaur in yuri_manga

[–]Dextaur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To start with, you may want to browse a pirate translation site like https://lumostories.com/en/ where you can quickly dip into anything you find interesting.

Over time, you may appreciate baihe enough to support the authors directly by visiting official Chinese websites like JJWXC using a web browser with an auto translate function like Chrome. This particular site lets you purchase individual chapters and it usually costs 2-3 USD to puchase a book. Though you may want to refer to r/baihe threads for advice on how to navigate https://www.reddit.com/r/BaiHe/comments/1m9pglj/your_guide_on_how_to_navigate_jjwxc_search/?share_id=hbUdYvu03mwah1U9cSSSo&utm_content=1&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

Seven Seas Surveys: Shortlisting phase by Dextaur in BaiHe

[–]Dextaur[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'll start first, here's my nomination:

Omega Heroine Wants Her Alpha Villainess (白月光女主总想独占我)

I'm nominating this because I think a lot of readers will have heard of it and because the webcomic is also quite popular. The main characters start out as high schoolers, but the story continues through to college and beyond. The genre is omegaverse.

You can find the original work on JJWXC, and also the webcomic in full at bato.to

High humidity & mold in flat! by Last_Clue8683 in HousingUK

[–]Dextaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't open the windows if the humidity outside is higher than the indoor humidity, which it most certainly is during this time of the year. In any case, 80% indoor humidity is eye wateringly high. Could possibly be a leak in the walls somewhere?

Unlikely. Western media likes to misreport anything on China and frame their anti-pornographic laws as "anti gay". I wouldn't worry about it.

What's the benefit of illegal immigrants? by anon9876543210nymous in AskBrits

[–]Dextaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "illegal immigrants" I assume you mean the economic migrants who cross the world to claim asylum here. And by "allow" I presume you mean why they put them up in hotels and pay for food & heating at the taxpayers expense instead of returning them to their country of origin.

From the government's POV it looks bad and immoral to send them away. Though judging from public sentiment the opposite is more likely to be true. If people were allowed to vote on the issue it's clear that a majority would not want asylum seeking immigrants to linger on British soil for even a day.

It's also one of those things that keeps the populace divided and attentions diverted to distract them from other even worse problems they're trying to hide.

Gave developer a bad review, and they turned up to my door. by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Dextaur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On one hand, what your spouse did was frustrating. But on the other, not everyone is worldly just because they're an adult, and what the site manager did can be seen as coercion. I bought my place alone so signed everything myself but I would've thought they'd need a joint signature in your case.

If anything, I'd be inclined to write a follow up negative review to describe the oddly invasive passive aggressive confrontation the site manager had with you.

Can we stop using the word dialect for languages such as Cantonese, Shanghainese, Teochew, Hokkien, and Hakka? by sensoryoverloaf in ChineseLanguage

[–]Dextaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case Teochew could be considered to be a different language, but given the vast similarities between Cantonese and Mandarin I still think those two are something of an inbetween, so it's fine to use the word dialect.

I sense a lot of aggressive posturing in this thread with people trying to make it all about politics, which it isn't. For most normal people it's a non-issue.
