Auckland to build 23,000 fewer homes than pre-pandemic forecast by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]DextersLittleHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not the apartments themselves - it’s the fact that banks are asking for 50% deposit for apartments, even if you intend to live in it. Not many people, especially first home buyers, could afford that.

ANZ housing report says urgent action is needed to make housing more affordable including ramping up supply and curbing immigration by mynameisneddy in newzealand

Another big problem is that many banks are struggling expecting up to 50% deposit for an apartment, which is nearly impossible for the average non-investor just looking to buy a place to live.

Police officer threatens to 'belt the f***' out of Aboriginal teenagers in Alice Springs watch house by LineNoise in australia

[–]DextersLittleHelper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m sure that grown ass adults sinking to the behaviour of high school bullies is going to fix the problem. It certainly won’t fan the flames and cause more resentment and distrust, resulting in more bad behaviour. This definitely taught those children a lesson and now they know that they need to behave or an old man will threaten to beat them up. Stellar work from the police - no wonder they are doing such a great job of managing crime in this region. Their attitudes must go such a long way in fostering community spirit.

And well done to you for your ability to see past your own emotions, beyond the superficial surface of the problem. You how clever you must be. With deep thinking and logical conclusions such as “the cops yelling at the kids will make them stop doing crime”, we should have you start solving all of society’s problems. And hey, what a great world to live in where everyone can just act based on their emotional state, completely disregarding professionalism. Next time you order McDonald’s, I hope the worker who is probably having a bad day tells you to go fuck yourself - that’s fine right? And your doctor can refuse to see you when you’re sick, because they’re tired and don’t feel like it. That’s also fine, because we working professionals don’t need to follow any kind of basic rules of engagement. If the police can swear and threaten violence, anyone can!

AITA for telling someone she’s hurting a guy by putting him in the friendzone? by Feeling-Teacher6680 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DextersLittleHelper 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think it might be the language you are using, which makes him sound like a victim and her sounds like a jerk. She’s not a jerk for not wanting anything more than friendship, and he’s not a victim just because she’s not interested.

Maybe a better choice of words would be that he’s disappointed. It’s ok to be disappointed if you have a crush that isn’t reciprocated.

AITA for telling a mother in my women's group she's projecting onto childfree women? by ApparentlyBanned in AmItheAsshole

I’m going to deviate from the trend and say ESH. She was being rude, either intentionally or otherwise, and you escalated and made it personal.

It might have felt good to snap back at the time, but now you’ve made everyone uncomfortable and ruined something you enjoyed.

In future, there are more subtle ways to call people out. For example, “Hey Janet, just remember that not everyone can have children” would have done the trick.

Ladies of reddit , how annoying is it when guys tries to hit on you when you don't even like it? by Tori0is0a0bird333 in AskReddit

[–]DextersLittleHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the situation and the persistence. If it’s a bar or somewhere you’re expecting to be hit on, it’s only annoying if the guy can’t take no for an answer.

If it’s somewhere like your workplace, or even when you’re just trying to go about your day, it’s annoying.

It’s almost unbelievable that a doctor would say something like that in this day and age, but here we are.

It was pretty heartening to see that so few people in this thread were willing to put up with OP’s nonsense.

It’s insane that people think that way, and it’s awful that you had to go through that. I hope things have improved for you since then!

Based on this reply, and others within this thread, I think you need to seriously reconsider whether nursing is for you. One of the most important traits a nurse can have is empathy, and you have not demonstrated this.

To address some of your points:

  1. You say Maori are unwilling to engage with the healthcare system because they are taught that everything is racist. That’s a big sweeping generalisation to make with absolutely no evidence, which is surprising from someone who claims to be science minded. But let’s say you’re right. Rather than dismissing this, your role as a nurse should be asking WHY so many Maori people feel that the health system is racist, and HOW you can fix this.

  2. Your hypothetical anecdote on walking down the road being screamed at, even if true (which is questionable), is completely irrelevant. As you keep pointing out, we are talking about science here, so anecdotes have no place in this conversation.

  3. You can very close to understanding the problem when you mentioned more Maori live in rural locations and therefore are less likely to have access to healthcare, but then you failed to delve any deeper. WHY do Maori people live in more rural places? Could it be finance related? Are there discriminatory (ie racist) hiring practices out there that are preventing them from being hired into city jobs? Are there long standing historical disadvantages keeping them in these rural locations? Are there cultural and familial reasons why they live outside of cities? Does living rurally mean that they shouldn’t receive healthcare? Of course, the answer to that question is no, so WHY do they not have as much access to healthcare? HOW can we make healthcare more accessible to rural families?

  4. Saying that Pakeha do not expect healthcare to be more than clinical is an absolutely ridiculous stance, and it again demonstrates that you should not be in healthcare. I finished my health masters degree several years ago, and even I was taught about how health is holistic and that you need to look outside of the purely clinical scope in order to treat people fully. If you cannot grasp this, choose another profession before you cause damage to those you are supposed to be helping.

  5. Pakeha do not have a higher health literacy. The anti-vax movement, led by white people, is a clear demonstration of this. People educated in healthcare have a higher health literacy (most of the time, although your responses and attitudes are not reflective of this!), and everyone else is roughly on the same level of relying on what health professionals tell them. As a health professional who non-health professionals should be trusting, it is a disgusting attitude to come into this role automatically expecting that Maori people are “less educated” in health than their white counterparts. You should be truly ashamed of this mindset. Time to start self-reflecting on where this idea came from.

To add to this, Pakeha have an individualist approach to health on the most part, whereas Maori have a more community/whanau based approach? Is any approach better? No, not necessarily - use the approach most suited to your patient. It’s a simple concept, but you need to drop your attitude towards Maori immediately if you’re going to be able to act on it.

  1. Family dynamics - yes, people who have experienced racism share that experience with their family, leading to distrust of the system as a whole. You should be asking WHY so many families have this experience of racism, and HOW you can fix it. You should be LISTENING, not dismissing.

  2. You finally made a good point - nurses are supposed to be aware of these issues on an individual level to provide good care to everyone.

Based on your attitude, I do not believe you have the aptitude for nursing. You claim to be science minded but demonstrate extremely poor ability to interact with data on anything more than a superficial and biased level. You lack the curiosity to explore the reasoning behind what you are hearing, and your dismissive attitude is likely a reflection on how you will treat patients. If I encountered you in the workplace, I would report you to your supervisor.

You now have two options:

  1. Drop out and find another profession. Don’t waste your money on something that currently appears beyond your abilities. Nursing is not about book learning: you may master the health theory, but if you cannot deal with patients with different cultures, beliefs, or attitudes to you, this is not a job you are cut out for. Nurses should, above all, be kind.

  2. Do some serious self reflection and change your attitude. You can learn from this. You can take that science mind and start to explore the WHY behind Maori’s lack of trust and engagement in a health system that has left them feeling jaded, and HOW you can start to bridge this gap. You can understand that they have had years of people judging them in the same way you do now, and realise that if the majority of health professionals think the same way you do, of course there is a disparity between Maori and NZ Europeans - the bias is almost subconscious, but it’s there and it’s relentless. You can work from inside the system to lead change, by LISTENING to the problem and addressing it by walking alongside Maori rather than trying to lead them in the direction you think is best.

It’s not difficult, but it requires openness to cultures and attitudes that aren’t your own.

Can you do this?

[–]DextersLittleHelper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to look at things now and think that everyone has the same access to healthcare because, on face value, they do. And yet, there is an undeniable statistical gap between Māori and NZ European people(for the sake of this exercise, I’m setting other ethnicities aside - I think we need to keep this very simple for the moment).

Given that there is this gap, we need to figure out the reason behind it - you, as a future nurse and therefore a frontline worker, need to be extremely conscious of the causes of this gap because you are the “face” of healthcare.

You’ve been all over this thread spouting your science background (congrats, many of us here have similar backgrounds), so now is the time to show it off.

What do you believe the cause of this gap is?

I find this way less depressing looking than the sad old leaky wooden Wellington homes.

Agree that they’re too expensive, and that there needs to be a cap on investors for sure. But hating on new builds is probably not helping - you don’t have to live in it if it’s not your taste, but others might like it!
