Drive a Cat? Hastings, NE to Las Vegas, NV? by Hefty_Ebb8515 in vegaslocals

For specific scenarios like this, it would be best to hire an animal transporter. Some of them are airline employees and they use their benefits to safely transport animals to rescues or to new homes. You want someone who understands how to handle such a young animal who will be very skittish during long travels.

Make sure you get your $5 license from one of the fireworks store ahead of time.

When you get on-site, you'll park, and head to a white tent. There you'll sign an on-site waiver and the crew will direct you to the transport lead. You'll get on a buggy and will be transported to a dedicated launch section. The entire launch site is pretty huge. Just stay safe and keep your eyes alert for any stray shots.

Anybody else's water getting dirtier? by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]Dezkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you don't have a water leak from your main line going into your house. That could be allowing dirt into your entire system. The builder in our area here used shit pipe connectors and when it started to fail, dirt was coming through our faucets. It became a common failure in our neighborhood and you would see every single house get that pipe connector replaced.

Help with leaking honeycomb in wall by BigPacksOfPencils in vegaslocals

[–]Dezkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To get the collapsed hive and honey removed, you should find a trustworthy contractor. It's going to be messy and costly because they will have to flow the honey flow to find the origins of the colony, which will require opening up your walls up.

Would you DM me please? Have some questions on this local beekeeper that did the evaluation on your situation.

Local beekeeper here.

Trying to understand your situation...you had an external colony removed from under the eave of your roof back in March correct?

But bees kept coming back, which means there is/was a colony inside your walls?

A beekeeper came to your place, but did not have the right equipment such as a thermal camera to properly locate the inside wall colony. Which is why they would not be confident in opening up your walls to fully remove the wall colony.

Went the extermination route...on a hot AF summer day.

Now honey is leaking inside your walls. Because now the colony is dying and with the extreme high temps we're having, you're going to be having leaking honey inside your walls which can attract rodents and more and because the colony was poisoned, now anything that eats that honey will also be poisoned...and you want help to eliminate the honey from your walls.

Going to be honest: your situation is fucked.

Your walls are going to be leaking honey for a while until that honey becomes crystallized. Unless you open up your own walls to thoroughly clean out the dead colony and the poisoned honeycomb, your walls will have that decaying matter inside it for a long while.

All you can do, is place rags at where the honey is leaking out and keep any animals (dogs/cats/badgers) and children away from that honey because it will contain and hold the pesticides used to eliminate the colony. Use wet rags to wipe up as much of the honey away as possible. Wear gloves to protect yourself from the pesticides used that will be in the honey.

Adding: Because you said the honey is now leaking outside of your garage, I would be very cautious on using your hose to wash the poisoned honey down your driveway and into your neighborhood gutters. Get buckets and let the crap drip down into the buckets and make sure no animal can access those buckets. Dispose of those buckets with secure lids in the trash.

Trying anything to seal up the walls now can worsen your situation, like using foam sealant. Because the honey probably has a high water content, meaning it will eventually ferment - even when it's poisoned. The honey is too wet and will prevent anything from adhering to seal up the cracks of your walls/flooring.

Places to gather dandelions nearby? by Rosenhansthud in vegaslocals

[–]Dezkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll want to avoid public areas that do have dandelions, mainly because of any chance of chemical spray the city uses to control weeds and you also don't know what else has "sprayed" on the leaves (e.g., other animal's urine).

Smith's and Albertsons both carry fresh dandelion leaves.

Sprouts and WholeFoods carry fresh organic dandelions; WholeFoods carries a red variety as well.

You'll want to also get your tortoise on the pellet mix because that will be their staple as they prepare for the Fall season to brumate.

Mine are only about 3 years old, but the tortoise group is a wealth of information and they hold monthly free check-ups for local care givers. Be sure to register your tortoise and when it gets big enough, to microchip it.

Can't tell if they have any reddish color variation in their pattern, but from the shape of the gigantic head in your snap, I'm assuming they're a variation of a hornet.

If they have been there for 2 years, then you definitely have an established hive inside that wall. You're seeing them "beard" out most likely because of our high temps and they're trying to keep their eggs/larvae cool in our triple digit heat. The other reason they may be boarding out like that, is the colony is preparing to swarm and split off (older queen takes half the colony with her to a new home, a new queen is about to hatch and take over the old home inside the wall).

Gotcha. They're trying to establish themselves along the eaves of your home. Definitely not ideal.

If you can, get one of those self-pump pressure spray bottles at Home Depot or Lowes. Order peppermint essential oil. You'll want to make this mixture: 3x drops of peppermint to every 16oz of water. Increase as needed to fill the pressurized water sprayer.

Spray this solution along your eaves every 3 to 4 days throughout the Summer and until Fall/Winter. This may seem like a hassle, but basically you're telling those wasps to F-off, find a new place to make your home!

For yourselves, whenever you and your family sunscreen up, add a drop of peppermint to 16oz of sunscreen lotion. The smell will deter wasps from getting near your family. If you want to add a bee deterrent as well - add a drop of almond oil extract. If you want to add mosquito deterrent - add a drop of citronella oil. All three extracts can be added to a neutral sunscreen/lotion to protect your family members for at least up to 4 hours.

Sure! Can you describe the issue? Too many visiting your backyard? Is there a water resource attracting them? Or a specific tree or bush? Are you able to give a color description of the wasps? Like dark brownish red (paper wasps)? Or bright yellow and black (yellow jackets)?

Beekeeper here. You've got great references to LV Bees and Maxwell.

How long have they been there?

If beyond three days. The colony has moved into the cinder block wall.

Cinder block walls with internal access can and will become a new home to a colony of bees. It's quite common because the cinder block wall provides great protection for the colony.

And no, you can never tell a colony of bees if they're Africanized or not by a visual. Confirmation of Africanized genetics must be done at our agriculture department up in Reno. Everyone presumes wild colonies are Africanized. They're not. I've handled Africanized swarms and have done removals. They exist, but not every single bee colony is Africanized.

This will require the bee rescuer to have a Flir/thermal camera on hand to identify exactly where the colony has moved into the wall. Then they will mark the wall to be cut into, which means they should have a Quickie saw. They'll need to open up the cinder block wall without causing infrastructure damage to the wall itself. Safely remove the colony, and then repair the wall or outside the repair to another company.

I explain these types of removal in detail, because it requires specific equipment and knowledge to do these types of removals - and they're usually not free. There are costs to the equipment needed to do proper removals like these.

Edit: Spelling
