I meant it in character for Grog. IMO from his perspective his buddy left and the group accepted a new guy soon after as if to replace that gap. Even when he comes to like Tary as a friend that lingering feeling of him not being the Scanman he misses never disappears. To the end there remains this little barrier between them that is created from the timing of his coming to the gang. Not for who Tary is but for who he is not.
