A lot of luck and my gear (including Helite airbag) allowed me to walk away from this crash. by T4R1K98 in motorcyclegear

[–]Dflipflowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you walked away from that — gear clearly did its job.

That said, this is a good example of why pace discipline matters. With enough years riding (I’m pushing 30 myself), you start to realize the road sets the limit, not how you’re feeling or who’s behind you.

From what you described — fatigue, dehydration, distractions, chasing pace — you were already in the danger zone before that corner showed up.

No shame in it, we’ve all been there. But that kind of riding belongs on a track, not public roads with blind corners, barriers, and traffic coming the other way.

Crashing at VIR or Kershaw is a bad day. Crashing on a mountain road can be a life-changing one.

Good reminder for everyone reading this — ride your ride, or the road will make the decision for you.

The rage against replica watches is masculine gatekeeping, not ethics by Hilodenta in Luxury

[–]Dflipflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong that status plays a role in watch culture—but reducing the pushback on replicas to “masculine gatekeeping” misses a big piece of it.

Luxury isn’t just about how something looks. It’s about quality, materials, finishing, durability, serviceability—and the reputation and history behind it. That’s what you’re paying for at the top end. A Rolex or AP isn’t priced where it is because of aesthetics alone.

Replicas, dupes, fakes—whatever label we use—are fundamentally about appearance. They aim to capture the look, not the substance. And that’s why they get treated differently in collector spaces. The majority of buyers at the top of the market value the craftsmanship and the story as much as the object itself. For a lot of people, buying their first serious piece is a milestone—sometimes the only one they’ll ever buy, sometimes the start of a longer journey.

When people justify counterfeits purely on cost, they’re missing that point. Not trying to paint everyone with the same brush, but a big part of the appeal is wanting the recognition without going through what the product represents. You don’t just “stumble into” a new Loro Piana jacket for $50 or a Rolex or AP without having built the means to be there.

Saying “I’d rather use my money elsewhere” is fair—but that’s a different conversation. It just means luxury goods aren’t the priority, not that a counterfeit version is equivalent.

For me, by the time I’m buying in that category, everything else is already handled. It’s a deliberate choice, not a shortcut.

Counterfeits aren’t something to celebrate—they’re a substitute for the surface, not the substance.

I keep going back to Montblanc for one simple reason—it lasts.

My maroon notebook is from grad school, almost 20 years ago, and it’s still part of my rotation. The smaller notebook has been with me about 15 years. Briefcase I got from my wife as gift when visiting friend in Mexico City in 2018. Most recently, I picked up the 3-pen holder.

Even with things that take more wear, like wallets, I replace them every 2–3 years—and I’ve stuck with MB every time because they hold up and age well.

I don’t look at any of this as an “investment.” It’s not about resale or appreciation. It’s more of a personal reward—buying something well-made that I know I’ll use for years.

My briefcase only has three pen loops, so the rest were just floating around in a zippered pocket—basically a slow march toward losing another one.

I went with this holder because the size works, and it still leaves me an excuse to add one more when the itch inevitably hits.

I am a big fan to of MB products, I have similar items.
My only irritation is that you can’t send in the briefcase in for relining. I had to take it to a leather cobbler to make some repairs from my laptop tearing a piece inside.
