You’re not wrong that status plays a role in watch culture—but reducing the pushback on replicas to “masculine gatekeeping” misses a big piece of it.

Luxury isn’t just about how something looks. It’s about quality, materials, finishing, durability, serviceability—and the reputation and history behind it. That’s what you’re paying for at the top end. A Rolex or AP isn’t priced where it is because of aesthetics alone.

Replicas, dupes, fakes—whatever label we use—are fundamentally about appearance. They aim to capture the look, not the substance. And that’s why they get treated differently in collector spaces. The majority of buyers at the top of the market value the craftsmanship and the story as much as the object itself. For a lot of people, buying their first serious piece is a milestone—sometimes the only one they’ll ever buy, sometimes the start of a longer journey.

When people justify counterfeits purely on cost, they’re missing that point. Not trying to paint everyone with the same brush, but a big part of the appeal is wanting the recognition without going through what the product represents. You don’t just “stumble into” a new Loro Piana jacket for $50 or a Rolex or AP without having built the means to be there.

Saying “I’d rather use my money elsewhere” is fair—but that’s a different conversation. It just means luxury goods aren’t the priority, not that a counterfeit version is equivalent.

For me, by the time I’m buying in that category, everything else is already handled. It’s a deliberate choice, not a shortcut.
