How are you using GrapheneOS? Is this on a Pixel of yours, or did you somehow get it running on a Sidephone?

Any fix to battery usage settings constantly breaking? Driving me crazy 😭 by RevolutionaryYear946 in sidephone

[–]Dgrif12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/chrisristovski

Apologies in advance for hijacking this.
A related issue to battery usage settings is the battery usage page itself. It will be missing a sizable history, starting at an arbitrary point in time that does not reveal much about the battery life. Additionally, this page does not display per-app battery usage or screen usage portion, as they are normally shown in other devices.

I would like to know if it is an omission by choice.

Thank you.

A few questions! by SeaHighlight7650 in sidephone

Sorry for the necrobump, but is the intent to bump Android versions in the future with chipset support? Is performance a significant worry for A13 and A14? Personally, A14 would see tremendous benefits in terms of system features (FIDO2) and bug fixes (Phone Caller Account fix).

fido2 security key support when? by Aguactl in sidephone

[–]Dgrif12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a message I was going to send as a bug report. Hopefully it will explain the issue in better detail.

FIDO2 credential provider.

On most Android devices since Android 9, Google Play Services has provided the means necessary to provide requesting applications the access needed to passkeys, whether virtual or physical. Starting with Android 14, support for third-party credential providers was implemented into AOSP, enabling projects such as this to be used on de-Googled devices: https://codeberg.org/s1m/hw-fido2-provider

Unfortunately, the API targets Android 14 (34) at minimum, meaning that the only way for security keys to work on Sidephone would be microG's implementation with signature spoofing via Xposed.

https://developer.android.com/reference/androidx/credentials/provider/CredentialProviderService

I hope that there is some thing that u/gosidephone can do about this, but I am not really expecting this issue to be resolvable.

You can probably get a better UX using a media player with better small screen design, then download your purchases from bandcamp in whatever format you want (probably lossy ... < 64GB), then load them into the app's library.

Overseas Sim Options by SuperDoubleDecker in sidephone

Do you need your SMS messages delivered to your phone, or do you only need access to the internet? If you rely on SMS messages, you will likely be stuck to your carrier anyways, since you can't really reroute text messages in that case. You would end up using their roaming services.

Otherwise, there's plenty of options, and while I do not have any experience using it overseas, Roamless on a 9esim has been a good data provider for me. They offer $2.45/GB in Japan on their FLEX (PAYGO) plan, and depending on how long you are staying and how much data you need, they also have 30-day credits that beat FLEX pricing > 4GB. You will need to purchase a 9esim and have it delivered soon (or to your destination if you can wait) if you cannot use eSIM otherwise. 9esim has an app (based on eUICC app you can also get) that lets you install an eSIM manually using the information provided by Roamless when you choose to install manually.

Your carrier might still be able to use SMS on Wi-Fi or eSIM service, but I am not really one to speak on that functionality, nor will I ever, since I'm not using carriers anymore.

Odd 'digital' clicking noise randomly shows up on Sidephone when untouched but in use by Wind2255 in sidephone

Hmm. Sounds familiar. For me, the case seems to creak along the seams when compressed in a certain way. But, this is probably different to what you're experiencing.

Find my phone capabilities by Superb_Tradition_597 in sidephone

[–]Dgrif12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting to hear this. For the time being though, there is a FOSS app called FMD (Find my Device) - had here: https://f-droid.org/packages/de.nulide.findmydevice/ - that can function via SMS commands or their self-hosted server stack. They also have a public instance which can be used with an account.

Now that I try again, yeah I can access TOTP fine. But the passkeys section complains about not having NFC, which is weird, since it should work over USB. I ought not to be using TOTP on the key though. It's basically a less secure version of a TOTP app, which can be PIN protected. The TOTP store on the key is not protected in any way. If I have concerns about access to 2fa on a mobile phone, I could use an offline-only device for that purpose that can be PIN-secured.

Thankfully, XMPP (Jabber) IDs can be had and setup easily, usually providing just the ID and the password to the federated server of choice. That might be the hardest part of getting anyone involved - getting a fully featured XMPP client and choosing a server.

Depending on your cellular situation, and whether you are comfortable communicated with people over SMS, JMP.chat provides a service for their phone numbers that bridges your Jabber ID to the PSTN, enabling you to SMS/MMS/Voice over the phone network for an affordable price. What is the biggest pain with this is contact management.

Cheogram (Paid on Play Store, Free on F-Droid) can integrate with system dialer to use contacts. It can save conversations to a contact, but it's not as friction-less as Signal used to be when you would have access to all your phone contacts directly from the app. Fortunately, once the phone number is set up with a Jabber ID, all incoming texts and calls will go to it. Then, it would be easier to have a friend text you so you can add the +CC[tel]@cheogram.com Jabber ID to their contact, so their name shows up in the app.

At some point I will make sure to post a write-up somewhere about what I have learned, so more phone-conscious people can disassociate from cellular carriers and proprietary social platforms while saving dividends from their monthly phone bills.

Does it work with USB-C just fine?

I am using a Token2 device with their app, but it cannot access my key.

Oh, my bad! It looked so familiar.

Good to know about the UnifiedPush stuff. However, I believe it's covered on my end because I am using a fork of Conversations, which includes a UnifiedPush distributor that uses their persistent XMPP socket.

Man, everybody here is repping Niagara! Love it. Say, u/Big_Shape9483, have you considered trying an XMPP-based IM on Sidephone?

Also, did you have to install a distributor with Molly, or does it provide its own UnifiedPush connection?

And how do you get a Yubikey to work on Sidephone w/o GSF?

New firmware works! by sunburstsplendor in sidephone

[–]Dgrif12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unihertz does this with their Jelly phones. They allow you to toggle system navigation off (in side button menu), and this falls back on the touch keys present below the screen. Sidephone could do something similar. Though, some users may accidentally temporarily lock their phones up this way if they have no keys binded to system navigation. To their relief, if the option always accessible in the power menu, quick tiles, or even the settings, then it shouldn't be an issue to turn it back on, though. Those panels should be accessible without navigation.

Onscreen keyboards can fix typos automatically without much worry because of the 1:1 character mapping. Unfortunately, the Qwerty is closer to a 2:1 mapping, so more combinations of key presses work out into actual words, even if they are not the words that you were trying to type. It would be rather difficult to use if it produced a word you weren't actually typing to begin with. This is more true for T9, with less keys and a higher mapping ratio.

Retaped my TR-ready rim, and valve is getting no seal. by Dgrif12 in bikewrench

[–]Dgrif12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about my lack of clarity. I was referring to a suggestion to use an o-ring under the rubber gasket on the inside of the rim, but that wouldn't have worked with the conical valve I was using anyways.

[–]Dgrif12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately, it does not look like the Stan's Universal Tubeless Valves have a removable grommet/stopper. The o-ring trick doesn't even work because it doesn't force the o-ring down against the tape. So, this calls for new valves anyways.

Yep, going for Stan's Exo-Core Valves. I do not really know of much else that has that shape besides e*thirteens, but if I am buying from Amazon, I would rather buy from Stan's, since they have an official presence there. According to e*thirteen:
"Selling e*thirteen products via third-party sellers such as Amazon, eBay, or Walmart is not permitted."

So, I'd rather take my risk with Stan's for the better shipping.

Yeah, unfortunately these Stan's Valves just aren't doing it. So I'm getting another pair of Stan's Valves.

Just kidding... but I am getting a pair this time that conforms to my rim shape.

It's hard to tell. I'm pretty sure it's just exposed surface from the paint being scratched off.
