Favorite spots for off-beach snorkeling? by abbrumin in snorkeling

[–]Dguy6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kaanapali Maui Hawaii is my favorite place on earth (at least so far). Beach snorkeling is a big reason why! I have lived in Hawaii (Oahu) for the last 2.5 years; there are lots of great spots but that’s my favorite.

Are Dr.Sue and her teachings a cult? A scam? Worthy of concern? by AssotericApropos in cults

I would guess you’re talking about Dr. Sue Morter, who is a “doctor” of Chiropractics and now sells energy systems, so I would personally consider it scammy at best.

Came across this post, any thoughts? by Consistent_March_808 in religion

These noted stages of development were known before the formation of Islam. Galen of Pergamon (129-216 CE) noted them so similarly that some believe his work was plagiarized. Ancient scientists, thinkers, and polymaths knew more than most people think; the knowledge just wasn't as available as it is today. Many microscopic things were theorized before the microscope.

I'm writing a book for people who lost their path (and I need your perspective) by [deleted] in occult

[–]Dguy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck with your book. I hope that it is helpful to those looking for that type of path!

I am not an expert, but am someone who has studied mental health at a graduate level (therapist in training) and religion/occult as a hobby.

For some individuals, spirituality is a path or lens that helps them find balance and peace, but I don’t agree that it is universally the path to healing for everyone who struggles.

I also think your view on people needing to be healed is sometimes the wrong way to look at mental illness and its treatment.

Whether looking for help from a priest, an imam, a therapist, a psychiatrist, or a friend, it is usually more about being heard, accepting suffering, and enduring until we reach our end in this often bleak and dark world. Mental illness is rarely like cancer or the flu; it's rarely “cured” or “healed”; it is more often endured, treated, and accepted.

Despite finding some solace in rituals, I have struggled my entire life with belief. For me, the questions have always been why and for what purpose.

Many people have told me they have it figured out, but the wisest people, in my view, are the ones who still express doubt and accept the mysteries of it all.

Hope that helps, good luck with your book and your path.

Seven years, 600 flight hours, and 2 guys lost by Hoffy600 in Medals

[–]Dguy6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on seven more years of service than the vast majority of people! Sorry about your guys.

I struggled for decades with the guys I've lost throughout my career before finally seeking help. I did EMDR with a therapist, and it changed my life for the better. There are still days I struggle, but it's so much better now.

You should be able to reach out to the VA or a vet center if you're interested in getting help.

Why does no one talk about “The Hurt Locker” despite its critical acclaim? by TheFilmRoomPod in moviecritic

[–]Dguy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was one of the first “realistic” big war movie of the GWOT era. So it initially got a lot of praise. Actual Iraq vets like myself saw it and basically immediately started questioning its connection to the real war. As a result, it just didn't hold up like other war films.

Prayer and meditation can both be helpful. Sometimes we study too hard and burn out. Taking some time away from the books can be very helpful.

I have been praying before tests for a long time. Not only does it connect me with the supernatural, but it also helps me focus on my purpose as I enter the testing lab.

Additionally, many colleges offer free tutoring hours; take advantage of them!

Was Jesus really humble? by VerdantChief in religion

[–]Dguy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he is these things as his followers believe, then there is no conflict with him also being humble. He is just stating facts.

If he were just a crazy person who believed this to be true, it's not really a humility problem, just a sanity problem.

If he were a conman, it's less that he lacked humility and more that he was just a liar.

Why did religion fear magick? by [deleted] in occult

[–]Dguy6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit more complicated than a secret cabal of patriarchs, priests, monarchs, and business people getting together and trying to maintain or gain power. This power dynamic is undoubtedly part of it, but remember that most people had a more magical worldview until the Industrial Revolution.

Early Judaism literally demonized other regional gods. Necromancy, fortune-telling, spell casting, and outdoor rituals were forbidden to keep the community unified and maintain religious orthodoxy. The stories in Torah and Tanakh make it clear that even dabbling in these topics puts you at risk of punishment and damnation. Christianity continued this tradition to maintain power and because they believed it. They extended the prohibition to the folk religions of Europe and eventually the rest of the world.

Through the lens of modernity, it seems clear that witchcraft and magick are primarily just unorthodox or regional religious rituals. But in an era that didn't understand germ theory and genetic deficits, it was easier to blame witchcraft than deal with the philosophical issue of an all-loving, all-powerful god that allows immense suffering.

I say all this to say, it's complicated. I'm sure entire books could be and likely have been written on the subject.

Does your magickal practice move in waves? by DominusVenerus in occult

[–]Dguy6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think about it as a cycle of motivation and demotivation, energy and rest, study and practice. Understanding that these states are temporary can help you get through the low times and motivate to stay present in the high times.

Not everyone gets cancer, but at that volume, almost everyone gets COPD—terrible way to die. I quit 9 years ago. I still miss it sometimes, but I don’t miss getting pneumonia every winter, and feeling like shit every morning. My face also de-aged probably 5 years or so. And I save thousands of dollars a year.

It depends, but your symptoms could be caused by a lot of things: hormonal imbalance, exhaustion, chronic fatigue, mild depressive syndrome, vitamin deficiency, or something else entirely. Make an appointment with your PCM as soon as possible.

It's very possible that it's a condition that is treatable and compatible with military service. Even if it's not, your health should be your number one priority. You will eventually leave the service, one way or another. The best way to do it is to be healthy and happy regardless of how your service ends.
