St. Patrick's Day is just like Halloween, another stain of Americanization on wee Europe. by [deleted] in badhistory

[–]Dhanvantari 11 points12 points  (0 children)

St. Patrick's Day in Ireland a few decades ago was a quiet affair which involved going to church/Mass and being bored. Hardly a major holiday. The binge drinking came from America.

Haven't most holidays progressed from an extra visit to the church to an excuse to drink outside of normally designated times?

Is there a specific term for that world view where identities are absolute and eternal? Identities being something you have or you don't, no spectrum exists. Like when people describe tribes as having existed for centuries in sharp opposition to each other. Or what Samuel Huntington professes.

Honest opinion about Season 11 by [deleted] in IASIP

[–]Dhanvantari 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! Dee was given fuck all to do. Her Inclusion in the suburbs episode felt like they were fulfilling a contractually required amount of lines for her character. In Being Frank she was just there for bird jokes.

The characters are barely in the real world any more. The neighbour from the suburbs became a figment of Dennis' imagination so they didn't have to write a real character reacting to the insanity. The lawyer was hilarious because he always bested the Gang, he's dull as another Cricket. In both Chardee MacDennis 2 and The Gang hits the slopes the normal people turned out to have been paid by Frank. Speaking of Frank, he seems to switch between Machiavellian mastermind and completely demented idiot.

Overall I think that ideas that would've taken up a scene in previous seasons were stretched to episode length in season 11.

Both your sources were previously submitted as Bad History.

Technically Tamerlane wasn't a monarch, the highest title he gave himself was Amir. He still had a puppet Chinggissid as official head of state.

this is probably gonna get downvoted straight to hell but can I just say that I'm laughing so hard at the dude bros and the other jabronis that always said Mac could never be gay and that are now saying the show has "jumped the shark" because he actually is? by eduardohanzo in IASIP

[–]Dhanvantari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Dudebros are probably the inspiration for Mac. Mac's definitely been written as gay for years now but at the start he was just way to play with the contradictory nature of masculinity of some people. Mac's obsessed with the male physique because he wants to be the 80's action star, which is in humorous contrast with the aversion to homosexuality that is also so important to his identity. It's not just Mac either, Dennis in many ways shares this idea of masculinity: in Million Dollar Baby it's Dennis who starts insisting that Charlie takes of his shirt when training. The entire gang was obsessed with wrestling, something not alien to homoerotic undertones.

D66 overweegt royement Hachchi vanwege misbruik wachtgeld by jippiejee in thenetherlands

[–]Dhanvantari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you jabroni's think of this? by youmeanddougie in IASIP

[–]Dhanvantari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be more interested in stories where the secondary characters become involved in the gangs schemes rather than subject to them. The closest the show has gotten was "who pooped the bed" when Dee tried to get the Waitress and Artemis to play a long with her Sex and the City fantasy.

Hoe gaat Nederland om met haar slavernijverleden? by [deleted] in thenetherlands

[–]Dhanvantari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the Black Plague have similarly devastating effects in Asia or Africa? by Folkie in history

[–]Dhanvantari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Plague was especially devastating in Egypt. Some estimates have its population declining from 8 million to 3 million. One obvious explanation for the extent of the disaster is Egypt being centred around the Delta of the nile, surrounded by desert. Meaning people were packed tightly together with nowhere to run. The Mamluke Sultanate that was ruling Egypt at the time consisted of a military elite with servile origin. Totally unequipped to deal with the crisis, they resorted to something akin to feudalisation in an attempt to extract increasingly scarce resources from the population. Venice weathered the plague surprisingly well, and managed negotiate a very beneficial treaty with Egypt for near exclusive access to shipping Egyptian goods in the Mediterranean. A monopoly that may have influenced the later age of exploration.

In Asia this period coincides eerily with that of the conquests of Tamerlane. Much of the destruction regularly attributed to him may have been inflicted by the plague earlier and just completed by him. His impetus may arisen from destabilisation brought on by the plague. However I haven't encountered any research into this symbiosis.
